Form 1عَرُضَ30 senses · 11 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarعِرَضٌ عَرْضٌ

Core sense — it became broad, or wide; it appeared to him; he showed, or displayed, itgenerated

1.1it was, or became, broad, or wideعَرَاضَةٌ

though as a simple noun عَرْضٌ is generally used.

اعرض is used in the same sense, and occurs so in two examples below.

[And in the same way, استعرض It grew, or spread, wide; said of a tree; opposed to طَالَ, occurring in art. بهل.]

suspicion became, or has become, wideأَعْرَضَتِ القِرْفَةُ

In two copies of the S the verb here is written اعرضتُ, and in the O اعرضتَ; I do not know that the reading which seems to be the common one is found in any copy of the S.

A proverb; synonym اِتَّسَعَت. Used when a man is asked, “Whom do you suspect?” and answers, “The sons of such a one,” meaning the whole tribe.

[See Freytag's Arab. Prov. 2.112, where another reading is mentioned, shown by what he says to be أَعْرَضْتَ القِرْفَةَ You have made suspicion wide.]

the same as the proverb aboveأَعْرَضَ ثَوْبُ المَلْبَسِ

Other forms of this proverb: المِلْبَسِ and المُلْبِسِ, and المُلْتَبِسِ; that is, صَارَ ذَا عَرْضٍ and عَرُضَ and اِتَّسَعَ.

Used of one whose suspicion has become wide; that is, of one who suspects many people of a theft, or of saying a thing; or when you ask someone about a thing and he does not explain it to you.

[See again Freytag's Arab. Prov. 2.100, where it is said that أَعْرَضَ ثَوْبُ المُلْبِسِ apparently means The garment of the suspected has appeared; but that another reading is عَرُضَ, meaning has become wide.]

1.2it (a thing) appeared, or became apparent, to himعَرَضَ

The construction is with لَهُ. In some copies of the K, instead of the explanation ظَهَرَ وَبَدَا, we find ظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِ وَبَدَا, which is a mistake.

اعرض is used in the same sense; it deviates from a general rule, being quasi-passive of عَرَضَهُ, which see below. Literally, it showed its breadth, or width.

.

the sameعَرِضَ

like حَسِبَ, which deviates from the general rule.

the thing appeared to you from afarاعرض لَكَ الشَّىْءُ مِنْ بَعِيدٍ
the ghool appeared to himعَرَضَتْ لَهُ الغُولُ

Also عَرِضَتْ.

Of a thing the Arabs say عَرَضَ and اعرض and تعرّض and اعترض, using these verbs as synonyms, apparently meaning it showed, presented, or offered, itself (literally, its breadth, or width, or its side; see 5) to a person. The first and last also often mean, and the others sometimes, he pushed himself into an affair; he interfered in it.

IKt disallows اعرض in the sense of اعترض, as not having been found by him; but an instance of the former used in the sense of the latter occurs in the phrase إِذَا أُعْرَضَتْ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ, apparently meaning When she shows, or presents, herself to the lookers, in a poem by one of the tribe of Teiyi.

1.2.1good [i.e. the doing of good] has become within your power, or easy for youعَرَضَ لَكَ الخَيْرُ

Written الخَبَرَ in one place in the TA, and الخبر in a copy of the Msb. In one place in the TA عُرُوضٌ, referring there to الخَبَرُ, which is apparently a mistranscription. اعرض is used in the same sense.

the gazelle has exposed its side to youاعرض لَكَ الظَّبْىُ

Said to urge someone to shoot at it or cast at it: it has put its side in your power by turning it towards you.

Or اعرض لَكَ, said of an animal of the chase or of anything else, means it has put in your power, or exposed to you, its breadth, or width; or اعرض لَهُ means it (a thing) became within his power, or easy for him; literally, it showed its side to him.

[In the TA I find أَعْرَضَ فِى الشَّىْءِ explained as He had the width of the thing in his power; but فى here seems to be a mistake for لَهُ.]

empower; that is, grant accessأَعْرِضِى

A poet, addressing a woman, says this, meaning أَمْكِنِى.

1.2.2it happened to him; it befell him; it occurred to himعَرَضَ لَهُ

and عَرِضَ, in the same sense.

Said of an event, or of a disease and the like — such as disquietude of mind, or a state of distraction of the mind or attention — and also of doubt and the like. [So too is اعترض.]

an attack of fever, or the like, happened to himعَرَضَهُ عَارِضٌ مِنَ الحُمَّى وَنَحْوِهَا
it befell the bodyاعترض البَدَنَ

Said of a disease, as for instance the mange, or scab.

1.2.3he intervened as an obstacle to him, keeping him from what he wanted and from going his wayعَرَضَ لَهُ

and عَرِضَ له, in the same sense; and so اعترض له.

he opposed himself to him with the strongest oppositionعَرَضَ لَهُ أَشَدَّ العَرْضِ

Also اعترض: he opposed himself to him as strongly as possible. See also 5, second sentence.

One should not say عرّضتُ لَهُ, with teshdeed, in the sense of اِعْتَرَضْتُ.

an obstacle intervened, or preventedعَرَضَ عَارِضٌ
I journeyed, and an obstacle such as a mountain opposed itself to me and kept me from going onسِرْتُ فَعَرَضَ لِى فِى الطَّرِيقِ عَارِضٌ مِنْ جَبَلٍ وَنَحْوِهِ

Literally, an intervening thing intervened; a preventing thing prevented.

Also اعترض, from which come the اِعْتِرَاضَات [or objections] of the lawyers, because they prevent one from laying hold upon the evidence.

the thing intervened as an obstacle in his way, keeping him from going onعَرَضَ لَهُ الشَّىْءُ فِى الطَّرِيقِ
the thing stood in the way and preventedعَرَضَ الشَّىْءُ

Also اعترض. [And: the thing lay, or extended, breadthwise, or across; like اعترض.]

the thing intervened as an obstacle in the way to the thingاعترض الشَّىْءُ دُونَ الشَّىْءِ

Synonym حَالَ.

1.2.4I did not set myself against him with evilمَا عَرَضْتُ لَهُ بِسُوْءٍ

and ما عَرِضْتُ. These mean ما تَعَرَّضْتُ: see 5. Or, as some say, I did not become exposed to his reviling, or evil speaking, by reviling him or speaking evil of him. [See also عَرَضَ عِرْضَهُ below.]

1.2.5he went towards himعَرَضَ لَهُ

In art. نحو. Also عَرَضَ عَرْضَهُ and عُرْضَهُ, that is, نَحَا نَحْوَهُ; and so اعترض عرضه.

1.2.6

In the saying of El-Kumeyt:

shāhid
فَأَبْلِغْ يَزِيدَ إِنْ عَرَضْتَ وَمُنْذِرًا

— he means [And convey to Yezeed,] if you pass by him, [and to Mundhir; or perhaps, if you go to him; or if you present yourself to him.]

1.2.7the horse went along inclining towards one sideعَرَضَ الفَرَسُ

. Or he ran inclining his breast and head; and he ran inclining his head and neck (the K mentions only the maṣdar of the verb in this last sense). This is approved in horses but disapproved in camels. [See also 3, and 5.]

1.2.8the camel ate of the upper parts of the trees [or shrubs]عَرَضَ البَعِيرُ

that is, of the أَعْرَاض.

1.2.9a fracture, or some injurious accident, befell herعَرَضَتْ

Said of a she-camel. Also عَرِضَتْ, but the former is the more approved; and عَرَضَ لَهَا: a disease, or a fracture, befell her.

Also said of a sheep or goat: it died of disease.

the sheep, or goats, burst, or became rent, from abundance of herbageعَرِضَ الشَّآءُ
he died without diseaseعَرَضَ

. Said of an animal, or of a man, though the TA says there is no reason for this restriction.

1.2.10

عَرَضَ بِسِلْعَتِهِ means the same as عَارَضَ بِهَا. See 3, in two places. [And under the same, see a similar phrase.]

1.2.11he (a man) came to Mekkeh and El-Medeeneh, and El-Yemen, and what is around themعَرَضَ

That is, to العَرُوض.

1.3he made the thing apparent; he showed it, exposed it to view, presented it; and also he mentioned itعَرَضَ الشَّىْءَ

. Literally, he showed its breadth, or width, or its side; and hence it also means he made the thing stand as an obstacle, دُونَ شَىْءٍ, in the way to a thing.

he showed, or exposed to view, the thing to himعَرَضَ لَهُ الشَّىْءَ
he showed, propounded, or proposed, such a thing to himعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرَ كَذَا

العَرْضُ means طَلَبٌ بِلِينٍ, or طَلَبٌ بِلِينٍ وَتَأَدُّبٍ; so it also means he asked of him, with gentleness, the doing of such a thing.

I showed, or offered, the commodity for saleعَرَضْتُ المَتَاعَ لِلْبَيْعِ
he showed, or offered, to him the commodityعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ المَتَاعَ

That is, I showed the commodity to those wishing to buy it.

The phrase is used because the person shows the other the length and breadth of the thing, or because he shows him one of its sides.

temptations will be displayed to the hearts of menتُعْرَضُ الفِتَنُ عَلَى القُلُوبِ عَرْضَ الحَصِيرِ

From a tradition of Hodheyfeh. According to some, فِتَن [temptations and the like] will be displayed and embellished to the hearts of men like the ornamented and variegated garment called حصير; or they will be laid and spread upon the hearts like the حصير, and some say that by this last word is meant a certain vein extending across upon the side of a beast, towards the belly.

a slight exhibitionعَرْضٌ سَابِرِىٌّ

So in the proverbs by A'Obeyd, in the handwriting of Ibn-El-Jawáleekee; or عَرْضُ سَابِرِىٍّ, or عَرْضَ سَابِرِىٍّ.

he offered to me in the manner of offering water to camels taking a second draughtعَرَضَ عَلَىَّ سَوْمَ عَالَّةٍ

[See also arts. سوم and عل, and Freytag's Arab. Prov. 2.84.]

I displayed, or offered, the girl for saleعَرَضْتُ الجَارِيَةَ عَلَى البَيْعِ

In the same way المَتَاعَ is said of a commodity.

I gave him a garment, or piece of cloth, in place of his dueعَرَضْتُ لَهُ ثَوْبًا مَكَانَ حَقِّهِ

Also عَرَضْتُ لَهُ مِنْ حَقِّهِ ثَوْبًا, or مَتَاعًا, in this meaning; and in the same way عرضت بِهِ. (El-Umawee)

I showed the watering-trough to the camelعَرَضْتُ البَعِيرَ عَلَى الحَوْضِ

An instance of inversion, meaning عَرَضْتُ الحَوْضَ عَلَى البَعِيرِ; or it agrees in meaning with عَرَضَ النَّاقَةَ عَلَى الحَوْضِ and أَعْرَضَهَا, he offered to the she-camel to drink at the watering-trough.

he slew them with the swordعَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى السَّيْفِ
he beat them with the whip; he flogged themعَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى السَّوْطِ
he burned themعَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ
I cooked the honey to separate it from the waxعَرَضْتُ العَسَلَ عَلَى النَّارِ

Literally, he exposed them to the sword; see also 2.

[And عَرَضَ نَفْسَهُ لِلْهَلَاكِ He exposed himself to destruction.]

1.3.1the bringing of a man before a judge, and accusing himعَرْضٌ

[And the presenting, or addressing, of a petition and the like, with عَلَى or لِ before the word for the person to whom it is presented or addressed.]

1.3.2what makes you present yourself to such a one?مَا يَعْرِضُكَ لِفُلَانٍ

Or مَا يَعْرُضَكَ, with fet-h to the ى and damm to the ر, the verb being of the same class as نَصَرَ. Yaakoob disallows saying مَا يُعَرِّضُكَ لِفُلَانٍ, with teshdeed. [But the latter verb has a meaning closely allied to the one given here for the former, and exactly matching one mentioned before. See 2.]

1.3.3he reviewed the army, or body of soldiers, making them pass by him and examining their stateعَرَضَ الجُنْدَ

Also عَرَضَ الجُنْدَ عَرْضَ العَيْنِ, or عَرْضَ عَيْنٍ; in the A and B we find الجَيْشَ instead of الجند.. Or he made them pass before him in review, that he might know who was absent and who present; or he brought them out and examined them, that he might know them.

he made them pass by him, or before him, and examined them one by one, to see who was absent from those presentاعترضهُمْ
he examined the commodity, and the like, having it displayed before his eyeاعترض المَتَاعَ وَنَحْوَهُ

Also اعترضهُ عَلَى عَيْنِهِ. [See also عَرْضٌ.]

1.3.4I read, or recited, the writing, or bookعَرَضْتُ الكِتَابَ

. In the S it is left unexplained, but immediately followed by عَرَضْتُ الجُنْدَ عَرْضَ العَيْنِ. Or: I recited it from memory.

1.4he spoke evil of him; he reviled him; he detracted from his reputationعَرَضَ عِرْضَهُ

Muḍāriʿ عَرِضَ and اعترضهُ. It perhaps first meant he examined his grounds of pretension to respect, and then came to express a frequent consequence of doing so. Or it means he matched him, or equalled him, in grounds of pretension to respect; the former seems the more likely of the two, since اعترض فُلَانًا means he spoke evil of such a one, reviled him, detracted from his reputation, and annoyed him.

1.5he hit the side of the thingعَرَضَ الشَّىْءَ

. The side is عُرْض.

1.6he put the stick crosswise upon the vesselعَرَضَ العُودَ عَلَى الإِنَآءِ

Also السَّيْفَ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ in both phrases. J, in the S, apparently referring to the meaning rather than to the second phrase, says “this, only, with damm.” Crosswise is مَعْرُوضًا, or بِالعَرْضِ, both meaning the same. And so of the sword upon his thigh; عرّضهُ means the same.

1.6.1he turned, or placed, the spear sidewaysعَرَضَ الرُّمْحَ

and probably عَرُضَ also. Also عرّضهُ, maṣdar تَعْرِيضٌ. The opposite of سَدَّدَهُ. (S, in art. سد, for the former verb; and L, in the same article, for the latter.)

1.6.2the archer laid the bow on its side on the ground, and then shot with itعَرَضَ الرَّامِى القَوْسَ

.

1.6.3

The saying of Aboo-Kebeer El-Hudhalee, cited but not explained by Th:

shāhid
فَعَرَضْتُهُ فِى سَاقِ أَسْمَنِهَا

— ISd thinks it means And I made its (the sword's) breadth become concealed in the thigh of the fattest of them.

1.7he fed him; or he offered, or presented, food to himعَرَضَهُ

For عُرِضُوا means They were fed, and food was offered, or presented, to them. [See also 2, in the last quarter.]

1.7.1he filled the watering-trough and the water-skinعَرَضَ الحَوْضَ

Also القِرْبَةَ.

1.8

عَرَضَ الشَّوْكَ: see 8, near the end.

1.9he branded his camel with a particular markعَرَضَ بَعِيرَهُ

. The mark is عِرَاض; and so عرّضهُ.

the camel was branded with that markعُرِضَ البَعِيرُ

Maṣdar as above.

1.10I defrauded, or deceived, him in sellingعَرَضْتُهُ

.

1.11he was, or became, mad, or insane, or possessed by jinnعُرِضَ

Or عُرِضَ لَهُ. Or he was, or became, affected by a touch, or stroke, from the jinn.

(Mgh.) [In the TA, I find أَعْرَضَ فِى الشَّىْءِ expl. as signifying He had the width of the thing in his power: but فى , here, seems to be a mistake for لَهُ .] A poet, also, says أَعْرِضِى addressing a woman; meaning أَمْكِنِى [Empower thou; i. e. grant thou access]. (Msb.) You say also, عَرَضَ لَهُ أَشَدَّ العَرْضِ , and اعترض , He opposed himself to him ( قَابَلَهُ بِنَفْسِهِ ) with the most vehement opposition of himself. (TA.) See also 5, second sentence. One should not say, عرّضتُ لَهُ , with teshdeed, in the sense of اِعْتَرَضْتُ . (Msb.) You also say, عَرَضَ عَارِضٌ , meaning [An obstacle intervened, or prevented; lit.] an intervening thing intervened; a preventing thing prevented. (TA.) And سِرْتُ فَعَرَضَ لِى فِى الطَّرِيقِ عَارِضٌ مِنْ جَبَلٍ وَنَحْوِهِ I journeyed, and there opposed itself to me, so as to prevent my going on, an obstacle consisting in a mountain, and the like; as also اعترض : whence the اِعْتِرَاضَات [or objections] of the lawyers; because they prevent one's laying hold upon the evidence. (Msb.) And عَرَضَ لَهُ الشَّىْءُ فِى الطَّرِيقِ The thing intervened as an obstacle to him in the way, preventing him from going on. (TA.) And عَرَضَ الشَّىْءُ The thing stood up and prevented; [or stood in the way, or presented itself as an obstacle; or opposed itself;] as also اعترض . (TA.) [And The thing lay, or extended, breadthwise, or across, or athwart; like اعترض , q. v.] And اعترض الشَّىْءُ دُونَ الشَّىْءِ The thing intervened as an obstacle in the way to the thing; syn. حَالَ . (S, O.) مَا عَرَضْتُ لَهُ بِسُوْءٍ , aor. عَرِضَ ; and ما عَرِضْتُ , aor. عَرَضَ ; signify ما تَعَرَّضْتُ : see 5: or, as some say, I did not, or have not, become exposed to his reviling, or evilspeaking, by reviling, or speaking evil, of him. (Msb.) [See also عَرَضَ عِرْضَهُ , below.] عَرَضَ لَهُ also signifies He went towards him; (TA in art. نحو ;) and عَرَضَ عَرْضَهُ and عُرْضَهُ [the same, i. e.] نَحَا نَحْوَهُ ; (K;) as also اعترض عرضه (TA.) In the saying of El-Kumeyt, 1 he means [And convey thou to Yezeed,] if thou pass by him, [and to Mundhir: or perhaps, if thou go to him: or if thou present thyself to him.] (S.) فَأَبْلِغْ يَزِيدَ إِنْ عَرَضْتَ وَمُنْذِرًا عَرَضَ الفَرَسُ , (L, K,) aor. عَرِضَ , inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (L, TA,) The horse went along inclining towards one side: (K, TA:) or ran inclining his breast and head: (L, TA:) and ran inclining his head and neck; (K; [in which only the inf. n. of the verb in this last sense is mentioned;]) the doing of which is approved in horses, but disapproved in camels. (TA.) [See also 3, and 5.] عَرَضَ البَعِيرُ , (K,) inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (TA,) The camel ate of the أَعْرَاض , i. e. of the upper parts of the trees [or shrubs]. (K.) عَرَضَتْ , said of a she-camel, A fracture, (S, O, K,) or some injurious accident, (S, O,) befell her; (S, O, K;) as also عَرِضَتْ ; (O, K;) but the former is the more approved: (TA:) and عَرَضَ لَهَا a disease, or a fracture, befell her. (TA, from a trad.) Also, said of a sheep, or goat, ( شاة ,) It died by disease. (K.) And عَرِضَ الشَّآءُ The sheep, or goats, burst, or became rent, from abundance of herbage. (K.) And عَرَضَ , (IKtt,) inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (K,) He (an animal, IKtt, or a man, K, [but it is said in the TA that there is no reason for this restriction,]) died without disease. (IKtt, K.) عَرَضَ بِسِلْعَتِهِ i. q. عَارَضَ بِهَا . (K.) See 3, in two places. [And under the same, see a similar phrase.] عَرَضَ He (a man, S, O) came to العَرُوض , i. e. Mekkeh and El-Medeeneh, (S, O, K, TA,) and El-Yemen, (TA,) and what is around them. (S, O, K, TA.) عَرَضَ الشَّىْءَ , (S, Msb, K,) aor. عَرِضَ , inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (Msb,) He made the thing apparent; showed it; exhibited it; manifested it; exposed it to view; presented it; (S, O, Msb, K;) unfolded it; laid it open: and also he mentioned it: (Msb:) [lit. he showed its breadth, or width, or its side: and hence it also signifies he made the thing to stand as an obstacle, دُونَ شَىْءٍ in the way to, or of, a thing.] You say, عَرَضَ لَهُ الشَّىْءَ He made apparent, showed, exhibited, manifested, or exposed to view, to him the thing; (S, O, K;) unfolded it, or laid it open, to him. (S, TA.) And عَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرَ كَذَا (S, O, K *) He showed, propounded, or proposed, to him, such a thing, or such a case: (K, * TA:) [and he asked, or required, of him, with gentleness, the doing of such a thing; for] العَرْضُ signifies طَلَبٌ بِلِينٍ , (Mughnee and K, voce أَلَا ,) or طَلَبٌ بِلِينٍ وَتَأَدُّبٍ . (Mughnee voce لَوْلَا .) And عَرَضْتُ المَتَاعَ لِلْبَيْعِ [I showed, exposed, presented, or offered, the commodity for sale; or] I showed the commodity to those desirous of purchasing it. (Msb.) The phrase عَرَضَ عَلَيْهِ المَتَاعَ [He showed, or offered, to him the commodity] is used because the person shows to the other the length and breadth of the thing ( طُولَهُ وَعَرْضَهُ ), or because he shows him one of its sides ( عُرْضًا مِنْ أَعْرَاضِهِ ). (Mgh.) [Hence,] it is said in a trad. of Hodheyfeh, تُعْرَضُ الفِتَنُ عَلَى القُلُوبِ عَرْضَ الحَصِيرِ , which means, accord. to some, that فِتَن [Temptations, &c.,] will be [displayed and] embellished to the hearts of men like [as] the ornamented and variegated garment called حصير [is displayed and embellished]: (B, TA in art. حصر :) or the meaning is, that they will be laid and spread upon the hearts like the حصير : (IAth, TA in the present art.:) and some say that by this last word is here meant a certain vein extending across upon the side of a beast, towards the belly. (TA in art. حصر .) [Hence also,] عَرْضٌ سَابِرِىٌّ [A slight exhibition: (see art. سبر :)] so in the proverbs by A'Obeyd, in the handwriting of Ibn-El-Jawáleekee: (TA:) or عَرْضُ سَابِرِىٍّ : (TA, and so in a copy of the S in this art.:) or عَرْضَ سَابِرِىٍّ . (O, TA, and so in a copy of the S in this art.) With this agrees in meaning the saying عَرَضَ عَلَىَّ سَوْمَ عَالَّةٍ [He offered to me in the manner of offering water to camels taking a second draught: see also arts. سوم and عل ; and see Freytag's Arab. Prov. ii. 84]. (TA.) You say also, عَرَضْتُ الجَارِيَةَ عَلَى البَيْعِ [I showed, or displayed, or exposed, or offered, the girl for sale]: (S, O, TA:) and in like manner المَتَاعَ [the commodity]. (TA.) And عَرَضْتُ لَهُ ثَوْبًا مَكَانَ حَقِّهِ ; (S, O;) and عَرَضْتُ لَهُ مِنْ حَقِّهِ ثَوْبًا , (S, O, K,) or مَتَاعًا , (TA,) this meaning, [as also the former phrase,] I gave to him a garment, or piece of cloth, [or a commodity,] in place of his due: (S, O, K:) and in like manner, عرضت بِهِ . (El-Umawee, TA.) And عَرَضْتُ البَعِيرَ عَلَى الحَوْضِ , which is an instance of inversion, meaning عَرَضْتُ الحَوْضَ عَلَى البَعِيرِ [I showed the watering-trough to the camel]: (S, O, Msb:) [or it agrees in meaning with the phrase] عَرَضَ النَّاقَةَ عَلَى الحَوْضِ , and أَعْرَضَهَا , [as rendered] He offered to the she-camel to drink [at the wateringtrough]. (L, TA.) And عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى السَّيْفِ [lit. He exposed them to the sword; (see also 2;) meaning] he slew them (S, A, O, Msb, K) with the sword. (Msb.) And عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى السَّوْطِ He beat them with the whip; he flogged them. (K, * TA.) And عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ He burned them. (A, TA.) And عَرَضْتُ العَسَلَ عَلَى النَّارِ I cooked the honey [upon the fire] to separate it from the wax. (Msb.) [And عَرَضَ نَفْسَهُ لِلْهَلَاكِ He exposed himself to destruction.] عَرْضٌ also signifies The bringing a man before a judge, and accusing him. (IAar, in TA, art. عقب .) [And The presenting, or addressing, a petition, &c., with عَلَى or لِ before the word signifying the person to whom it is presented or addressed.] One says also, مَا يَعْرِضُكَ لِفُلَانٍ , (S, [so in two copies,] and O,) or مَا يَعْرُضَكَ , (L, TA,) with fet-h to the ى and damm to the ر , (L,) the verb being coordinate to نَصَرَ : (TA:) [app. meaning What causeth thee to present thyself to such a one?]: Yaakoob disallows one's saying مَا يُعَرِّضُكَ لِفُلَانٍ , with teshdeed. (S, O, TA.) [But the latter of these two verbs has a signification nearly allied to that which is here assigned to the former, and exactly agreeing with one mentioned before. See 2.] عَرَضَ الجُنْدَ , (S, Msb,) and عَرَضَ الجُنْدَ عَرْضَ العَيْنِ , (S, O,) or عَرْضَ عَيْنٍ , (A, K, B, except that in the A and B we find الجَيْشَ instead of الجند ,) aor. عَرِضَ , (Msb,) inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (Yoo, S,) He made the army, or body of soldiers, to pass by him, and examined their state, (S, O, K,) what it was: (S, O:) [i. e. he reviewed them:] or he made them to pass before him in review, that he might know who was absent and who was present: (A, B:) or he caused them to come forth, and examined them, that he might know them: (Msb:) and you say also, اعترضهُمْ , (S, O, K,) meaning [the same, or] he made them to pass by him, or before him, and examined them, one by one, (K, TA,) to see who were absent from those who were present. (TA.) You say also, اعترض المَتَاعَ وَنَحْوَهُ and اعترضهُ عَلَى عَيْنِهِ [He examined the commodity, and the like thereof, having it displayed before his eye]. (Th.) (Msb.) عَرَضَ عِرْضَهُ , aor. عَرِضَ ; (TA;) and اعترضهُ ; (A, TA;) [perhaps originally signified He examined his grounds of pretension to respect, or the like: and then became used to express a frequent consequence of doing so; i. e.] he spoke evil of him; reviled him; detracted from his reputation: (A, TA:) or he corresponded to him, or equalled him, in grounds of pretension to respect: (TA:) [the former seems to be the more probable of the two meanings; for it is said that] اعترض فُلَانًا signifies he spoke evil of such a one; reviled him; detracted from his reputation; (Lth, S, O, K;) and annoyed him. (Lth, TA.) عَرَضَ الشَّىْءَ , (K,) aor. عَرِضَ , inf. n. عَرْضٌ , (TA,) He hit the side ( عُرْض ) of the thing. Form 2عرّضهُ12 senses · 5 main
maṣdarتَعْرِيضٌ

Core sense — he made it broad, or wide; he spoke by allusion; he exposed it to a thinggenerated

2.1he made it (a thing) broad, or wideتَعْرِيضٌ

This is the maṣdar. Also اعرضهُ, maṣdar إِعْرَاضٌ.

2.1.1

See also 1, near the end, in three places.

2.1.2the speaking obliquely, indirectly, obscurely, ambiguously, or equivocallyتَعَرِيضٌ

The opposite of تَصْرِيحٌ; as when you ask a man, “Have you seen such a one?” and he, having seen him and not wanting to lie, answers, “Such a one is seen.” Or it is the making of a phrase, or the like, to convey an allusion, or an indication not expressly mentioned in it; as when you say, “How foul is niggardliness!”, alluding to such a one's being a niggard.

It differs from كِنَايَةٌ, which is the mentioning of the consequence and the meaning of that of which it is the consequence; as when you say, “Such a one has a long suspensory cord to his sword, and has many ashes of the cooking-pot,” meaning that he is tall of stature and entertains many guests. [But many hold these two words to be identical in meaning.]

I said something in this manner, meaning such a oneعَرَّضْتُ لِفُلَانٍ

Also بِفُلَانٍ. [See also an example under كَلَّآءٌ.]

the making of an allusion to what is foul, or obsceneالتَّعْرِيضُ بِالفَاحِشَةِ

'Omar explained it by the instance of a man saying to another, “My father is not an adulterer, nor is my mother an adulteress.”

Or, according to the early authorities, عرّض means he used a phrase open to different meanings, or an equivocal phrase, by which the hearer understood a meaning other than the one he intended; or, according to the later authorities, such as Et-Teftezánee, he mentioned a thing by a proper or figurative or metonymic expression, to signify some other thing which he did not mention; as when one says, “I heard the man you hate praying for you, and speaking well of you,” meaning in his praying for the Muslims in general. (El-Munáwee, in explaining the tradition إِنَّ فِى المَعَارِيضِ الخ, for which see below, under مِعْرَاضٌ.)

the use of language resembling a demand of a woman in marriage without plainly expressing itتعريض

That is, in the period of her عِدَّة, during which she may not contract a new marriage; as saying to her, “You are beautiful,” or “There is a desire for you,” or “Women are among the things that I need.” تعريض is sometimes made by quoting proverbs, and by bringing enigmas into one's speech.

[When followed by عَلَى it means the making of an indirect objection against a person, or a saying, and the like.]

2.1.3he wrote indistinctly, not making the letters distinct nor the handwriting rightly formedعرّض

The maṣdar is as above.

2.2the making of a thing to be exposed, or liable, to another thingتَعْرِيضٌ

In the K it is explained, with the article ال prefixed, by the words أَنْ يَجْعَلَ الشَّىْءَ عَرْضًا لِلشَّىْءِ, or عَرَضًا, according to different copies; the latter is apparently the right reading, meaning مَعْرُوضًا, whichever it be; for a maṣdar may be used in the sense of an ism mafʿūl, and many a word of the measure فَعَلٌ is so used, as for instance خَبَطٌ and نَفَضٌ and هَدَمٌ.

God's blessing upon a man has not become great without the burden of other men upon him becoming great; and he who does not take up that burden causes that blessing to be exposed to cessationمَا عَظُمَتْ نِعْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ عَلَى عَبْدٍ إِلَّا عَظُمَتْ مَؤُونَةُ النَّاسِ عَلَيْهِ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَحْتَمِلْ تِلْكَ المَؤُونَةَ فَقَدْ عَرَّضَ تِلْكَ النِّعْمَةَ لِلزَّوَالِ
I caused such a one to be exposed to such a thing, and he became exposed to itعَرَّضْتُ فُلَانًا لِكَذَا فَتَعَرَّضَ هُوَ لَهُ

That is, جَعَلْتُهُ عَرَضًا لِكَذَا. See also 1, last quarter.

2.2.1

Also the giving of a thing in exchange for, as an equivalent for, or in the place of, another thing.

[See also an ex. voce كَلَّآءٌ .] 'Omar defined [or rather explained] التَّعْرِيضُ بِالفَاحِشَةِ [The making an allusion to that which is foul, or obscene] by the instance of a man saying to another “ My father is not an adulterer, nor is my mother an adulteress. ” (O, TA.) Or, accord. to the early authorities, عرّض signifies He used a phrase susceptible of different meanings, or an equivocal phrase, by which the hearer understood a meaning different from that which he (the speaker) intended: or, accord. to the later authorities, as Et-Teftezánee, he mentioned a thing by a proper or tropical or metonymical expression, to signify some other thing, which he did not mention; as when one says, “ I heard him whom thou hatest praying for thee, and making good mention of thee; ” meaning in his praying for the Muslims in general. (El-Munáwee, in explaining the trad. إِنَّ فِى المَعَارِيضِ الخ , which see below, voce مِعْرَاضٌ .) تعريض with respect to the demanding of a woman in marriage in [the period of] her عِدَّة , [during which she may not contract a new marriage,] is the using language which resembles a demand of her in marriage, but does not plainly express it; as the saying to her “ Verily thou art beautiful, ” or “ Verily there is a desire for thee, ” or “ Verily women are of the things that I need: ” and تعريض is sometimes made by the quoting of proverbs, and by the introducing of enigmas in one's speech. (TA.) [When followed by عَلَى , it signifies The making an indirect objection against a person or saying &c.] Also عرّض , (S, O,) inf. n. as above, (K,) He wrote indistinctly; (S, O, K;) not making the letters distinct, nor the handwriting rightly formed or disposed. Form 5تعرّض8 senses · 1 main

Core sense — he set himself against him; he addressed himself to it; it turned asidegenerated

5.1

See عَرَضَ, near the beginning, where these two verbs and اعرض and اعترض are said to be used as synonyms, apparently meaning it showed, presented, or offered, itself to a person; literally, it showed its breadth, or width; or, as تعرّض is explained in the EM p. 19, it showed its عُرْض, that is, its side.

This — it, or he, presented, or offered, or exposed, its, or his, side — seems to be the primary meaning of تعرّض and of اعترض as well as of عَرَضَ, and occurs often; and all of them also mean he pushed himself into an affair, he interfered in it.

5.1.1he opposed himself to him; he offered opposition to him; or he attacked himتعرّض لَهُ

Said of a man, and of a beast of prey, or a noxious reptile, and the like; also عَرَضَ and اعترض. This meaning too occurs often.

5.1.2he addressed himself, or went forward, to obtain their favour, or bountyتعرّض لِمَعْرُوفِهِمْ

He addressed, applied, or directed, himself, or his regard, or attention, or mind, to him, or it, as though he set himself over against the object; synonym تَصَدَّى.

Also مَعْرُوفَهُمْ.

he addressed himself to obtaining favour, or bounty, and he sought, or demanded, itتعرّض لِلْمَعْرُوفِ

Also المَعْرُوفَ; and so اعترض للمعروف.

address yourselves to becoming objects of the outpourings of the mercy of Godتَعَرَّضُوا لِنَفَحَاتِ رَحْمَةِ ٱللّٰهِ
he addressed himself, in his testimony, to the mention of such a thingتعرّض فِى شَهَادَتِهِ لِكَذَا

Occurring in a tradition.

That is, تصدّى.

such a one set himself to do me an abominable, or evil, action; or opposed himself to me with an evil actionتعرّض لِى فُلَانٌ بِمَكْرُوهٍ

The verb is also synonymous with تصدّى here.

he sets himself to do evil to men; or he opposes himself to men with evil or mischiefيَتَعَرَّضُ لِلنَّاسِ بِالشَّرِّ
I did not set myself to do him evilمَا تَعَرَّضْتُ لَهُ بِسُوْءٍ

مَا عَرَضْتُ and مَا عَرِضْتُ are said to mean the same. [See 1.]

I addressed myself to asking themتَعَرَّضْتُ أَسْأَلُهُمْ
such a one came asking, or petitioning, another for a thing that he wantedجَآءَ فُلَانٌ يَتَعَرَّضُ

Also يَتَضَرَّعُ.

5.1.3he asked the companies of travellers for presentsتعرّض الرِّفَاقَ

The presents are what are called عُرَاضَات [plural of عُرَاضَةٌ, which see].

5.1.4

[تعرّض لِكَذَا also means He exposed himself, or became exposed, to such a thing.] See 2, latter portion.

5.1.5he, or it, turned aside; he, or it, turned from the right course or directionتعرّض

From عُرْضٌ; synonym تَعَوَّجَ. And زَاغَ: his, or its, course, or march, was, or became, indirect, or oblique.

the camel went to the right and left, on the mountain, because the road was difficultتعرّض الجَمَلُ فِى الجَبَلِ
the camels went along the routes to the right and left, that is, alternately to the right and leftتَعَرَّضَتِ الإِبِلُ المَدَارِجَ

The routes are فِى المَدَارِجِ; المَدَارِجَ is in the accusative case because فى is understood, not because the verb is transitive. [See a verse cited under تَصَدَّفَ and its explanation.]

Dhu-l-Bijádeyn, being guide to the Apostle, said, addressing his she-camel:

shāhid
تَعَرَّضِى مَدَارِجًا وَسُومِىتَعَرُّضَ الجَوْزَآءِ لِلنُّجُومِهٰذَا أَبُو القَاسِمِ فَٱسْتَقِيمِى

Go along routes to the right and left, avoiding the rugged slopes, [and continue your course, or, as explained in the TA, art. سوم, pass along quickly,] as الجوزاء [Orion] passes along in the sky obliquely in the arrangement of its stars [with respect to the other stars: (see 3, towards the end:) this is Abu-l-Kásim; therefore go straight].

5.1.6he inclines towards one side in his march, or goes obliquelyيَعْتَرِضُ فِى سَيْرِهِ

تعرّض الفَرَسُ فِى رَسَنِهِ means the same as اعترض, which see.

Said of a camel. So in the K, and in one copy of the S; in another copy of the S, يَتَعَرَّضُ. [See also 3, last quarter.]

5.1.7it (a thing) became infected, vitiated, or corruptedتعرّض

Said also of love, as though it turned from the right course — a meaning mentioned above; so it is explained in the S, as occurring in the phrase تعرّض وَصْلُهُ in the Mo'allakah of Lebeed; or, so used, it means a person's attachment to another became altered, so as to cease.

: see عَرَضَ , near the beginning, where these two verbs, and اعرض and اعترض , are said to be used as syn.; [app. as meaning It showed, presented, or offered, itself, to a person; lit. it showed, or presented, its breadth, or width; or, as تعرّض is expl. in the EM p. 19, it showed its عُرْض , i. e. side: this, or it, or he, presented, or offered, or exposed, its, or his, side, seems to be the primary signification of تعرّض , and of اعترض , as well as of عَرَضَ ; and is of frequent occurrence: and all (as mentioned voce عَرَضَ ) signify also he obtruded himself in an affair; interfered therein.] [Hence,] تعرّض لَهُ He opposed himself to him; he offered opposition to him; or he attacked him; said of a man, and of a beast of prey, or noxious reptile, and the like; as also عَرَضَ and اعترض : this signification also is of frequent occurrence. (The lexicons passim.) [Hence also,] He addressed, or applied, or directed, himself, or his regard, or attention, or mind, to him, or it; [as though he set himself over against the object to which the verb relates;] syn. تَصَدَّى . (Lth, Lh, S, O, Msb, K.) So in the saying, تعرّض لِمَعْرُوفِهِمْ and مَعْرُوفَهُمْ [He addressed himself, &c., presented himself, betook himself, advanced, came forward, or went forward, or attempted, to obtain their favour, or bounty]: and تعرّض لِلْمَعْرُوفِ and المَعْرُوفَ [He addressed himself, &c., to obtain favour, or bounty; and] he sought, or demanded, it: (Az, Msb:) and [so] اعترض للمعروف (Msb in art. عر . [See also اعترض لَهُ .]) So too in the saying, تَعَرَّضُوا لِنَفَحَاتِ رَحْمَةِ ٱللّٰهِ [Address ye yourselves, &c., to become objects of the effusions of the mercy of God]; (O, K, TA;) occurring in a trad. (TA.) And hence the saying, تعرّض فِى شَهَادَتِهِ لِكَذَا He addressed himself, &c., ( تصدّى ,) in his testimony, to the mention of such a thing. (Msb.) It is likewise syn. with تصدّى in the saying, تعرّض لِى فُلَانٌ بِمَكْرُوهٍ [Such a one addressed himself, &c., or attempted, to do me an abominable, or evil, action; or opposed himself to me with an abominable, or evil, action]. (Lth.) [In like manner also you say,] يَتَعَرَّضُ لِلنَّاسِ بِالشَّرِّ [He addresses himself, &c., to do to men evil; or he opposes himself to men with evil or mischief]. (S, K.) And مَا تَعَرَّضْتُ لَهُ بِسُوْءٍ [I did not address myself, or have not addressed myself, &c., to do to him evil]: and مَا عَرَضْتُ and مَا عَرِضْتُ are said to signify the same. (Msb.) [See 1.] You say also, تَعَرَّضْتُ أَسْأَلُهُمْ [I addressed myself, &c., to ask them]. (S, O. *) And جَآءَ فُلَانٌ يَتَعَرَّضُ , and يَتَضَرَّعُ , Such a one came asking, or petitioning, to another, for a thing that he wanted. (Fr, in S, art. ضرع .) And تعرّض الرِّفَاقَ He asked the companies of travellers for what are termed عُرَاضَات [pl. of عُرَاضَةٌ , q. v.]. (TA.) تعرّض لِكَذَا [also signifies He exposed himself, or became exposed, to such a thing]. (S.) See 2, latter portion. Or it intervened in any manner, as shown in the part last referred to above; or rather it has both of these meanings. In the former sense it is used in the TA, art. حر, in describing the direction of an asterism, opposed to اِنْتَصَبَ.

In other words, it (a thing) became an obstacle, like a piece of wood lying across, or obliquely, in a channel of running water, or in a road and the like, keeping people from passing along it. It is said also [of a collection of clouds appearing, or extending sideways, or stretching along in the horizon like a mountain; see عَارِضٌ and] of a building, or other thing, such as the trunk of a palm-tree, or a mountain, lying in a road; and since this keeps travellers from passing along the road, the verb is used to mean he, or it, prevented, or hindered. It is quasi-passive of عَرَضَهُ.

Core sense — breadth, width; a mountain; a commodity, or goodsgenerated

1figurative · مجازand a paradise whose breadth, or width, is like the breadth of the heaven and the earthوَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا كَعَرْضِ السَّمَآءِ والأَرْضِ

Breadth; width; the opposite of طُولٌ, and the same as سَعَةٌ, the distance between the edges or sides of a thing. In the sense of the opposite of طول this word is the common source from which the other words of this article are derived, however many they are. Plural (of paucity) أَعْرَاضٌ, and (of multitude) عُرُوضٌ and عِرَاضٌ. The first phrase is in the Kur 57.21, the second in 3.127.

the breadth, or width, of which is as the heavens and the earthعَرْضُهَا السَّمٰوَاتُ والأَرْضُ

Nounعِرْضٌ18 senses · 5 main

Core sense — a man's honour, or reputation; one's self, the body; a valley containing treesgenerated

1

See عُرْضٌ, first meaning.

1.1

Also the side of a valley, and of a بَلَد [a country or the like, or a town or the like]. (In the CK بلد is in the nominative case, which I think a mistake.) Or, as some say, a part, region, quarter, or tract, and the low ground or land, of either of these. Plural أَعْرَاضٌ.

1.2

A valley in which there are towns, or villages, and waters; or in which there are palm-trees; or a valley containing many palms and other trees; or any valley in which there are trees. [See also عَرْضٌ explained as applied to a valley.] Plural as above, and عُرْضَانٌ.

1.3the towns, or villages, of El-Hijázأَعْراضُ الحِجَازِ

Or these, or the أَعْرَاض, are certain towns, or villages, with their territories — certain provinces or districts — between El-Hijáz and El-Yemen. Some say that أَعْرَاضُ المَدِينَةِ is applied to the towns, or villages, that are in the valleys of El-Medeeneh, or to the low lands of its towns and villages, where there are seed-produce and palm-trees, as Sh says. The singular is عِرْضٌ.

1.4

And عِرْضٌ, or أَعْرَاضٌ, which is its plural, means the trees called أَرَاك and أَثْل and حَمْض.

2

Also a great cloud, appearing, or presenting itself, or intervening, in the horizon. [See عَرْضٌ and عَارِضٌ, which mean nearly the same.]

3figurative · مجاز — inferred

The same as عَرْضٌ, which see, meaning an army, or a great army.

3.1figurative · مجاز — inferred

And meaning numerous locusts.

4I kept myself clear of itأَكْرَمْتُ عَنْهُ عِرْضِى

One's self; the same as نَفْسٌ, that is, نَفْسُ رَجُلٍ.

such a one is pure in himself, free from reproach, or from fault, or vice, or the likeفُلَانٌ نَقِىُّ العِرْضِ
lend from yourself for the day of your povertyأَقْرِضْ مِنْ عِرْضِكَ لِيَوْمِ فَقْرِكَ

From a saying of Abu-d-Dardà; but see art. قرض. It occurs in the same sense in other instances as well.

4.1it is only sweat which flows from their bodiesإِنَّمَا هُوَ عَرَقٌ يَجْرِى مِنْ أَعْرَاضِهِمْ

The body; the same as جَسَدٌ, or بَدَنٌ; plural أَعْرَاضٌ. So in the description of the people of Paradise, in a tradition.

4.2

The skin. (Ibráheem El-Harbee)

4.3

Any place of the body that sweats: so in the tradition cited above; or any part of the body such as the arm-pit and the groin and the like.

4.4such a one is sweet in odourفُلَانٌ طَيِّبُ العِرْضِ
foul in odourمُنْتِنُ العِرْضِ

The odour of the body, and of other things, whether sweet or foul.

And سِقَآءٌ خَبِيثُ العِرْضِ, a stinking water-skin, or milk-skin; from A'Obeyd.

4.5such a one is generous, or noble, in respect of honourفُلَانٌ كَرِيمُ العِرْضِ

A man's honour, or reputation, which he keeps from being impaired and from blame, both as it concerns himself and as it concerns his حَسَب [grounds of pretension to respect on account of the honourable deeds or qualities of his ancestors and the like]; or whether it concerns himself, or his ancestors, or those whose affairs he is bound to manage.

Or a subject of praise, or of blame, in a man, (Abu-l-'Abbás) whether it be in himself, or in his ancestors, or in those whose affairs he is bound to manage; or those things by the mention of which, with praise or dispraise, a man rises or falls, which may be things belonging to him apart from his ancestors, or his ancestors may be mentioned in such a way that imperfection attaches to him through the blaming of them. On this there is no disagreement among the lexicologists except IKt, whose objection is given below. (Abu-l-'Abbás)

Or grounds of pretension to respect on account of the honourable deeds or qualities of one's ancestors and the like, and eminence, or nobility, in which one glories.

That is, of حَسَب.

he is a possessor of honour and of nobilityهُوَ ذُو عِرْضٍ

That is, of حَسَب and of شَرَف.

4.6such a one spoke evil of the ancestors of such a oneشَتَمَ فُلَانٌ عِرْضَ فُلَانٍ
such a one is base, or ignoble, in respect of ancestryفُلَانٌ جَرِبُ العِرْضِ

Sometimes ancestors are meant by it.

IKt disallows this meaning, holding that عِرْضٌ has no meaning other than a man's نَفْس and his بَدَن; but I Amb says that this is an error, as is shown by the saying of Aboo-Miskeen Ed-Dárimee:

shāhid
رُبَّ مَهْزُولٍ سَمِينٌ عِرْضُهُوَسَمِينِ الجِسْمِ مَهْزُولُ الحَسَبْ

in which عِرْض cannot be synonymous with بَدَن and جِسْم, for if it were, it would involve a contradiction; the meaning being only that many a person meagre in body is noble, or great, in respect of his ancestry, and many a one fat in body is meagre in respect of the grounds of pretension to honour that come from his ancestors' deeds and qualities. It is shown also by Mohammad's using the expression دَمُهُ وَعِرْضُهُ; for if عِرْض were synonymous with نَفْس, it would have been enough to say دمه without عرضه.

4.7

Also a natural disposition that is commended.

4.8

And a good action.

5

Also one who speaks evil of men falsely, applied to a man; and with عِرْضَنٌ, applied to a woman; and likewise ة, applied to a man, and with عَرْضَنٌ to a woman.

(Ibráheem El-Harbee, O, K.) Any place of the body that sweats: (O, K:) so in the trad. cited above: (TA:) or any part of the body such as the arm-pit and the groin and the like. (A'Obeyd.) The odour of the body, (S, O, K,) and of other things, (S, O,) whether sweet or foul. (S, O, K.) You say, فُلَانٌ طَيِّبُ العِرْضِ [Such a one is sweet in respect of odour], and مُنْتِنُ العِرْضِ [foul in respect of odour]; and سِقَآءٌ خَبِيثُ العِرْضِ a stinking water-skin, or milk-skin; from A'Obeyd. (S, O.) A man's honour, or reputation, ( جَانِبُهُ ,) which he preserves from impairment and blame, both as it relates to himself and to his حَسَب [or grounds of pretension to respect on account of the honourable deeds or qualities of his ancestors, &c.]: (IAth, O, K:) or whether it relate to himself or to his ancestors or to those of whose affairs the management is incumbent on him: (K:) or a subject of praise, and of blame, of a man, (Abu-l-'Abbás, IAth, O, K,) whether it be in himself or in his ancestors or in those of whose affairs the management is incumbent on him: (IAth:) or those things by the mention whereof with praise or dispraise a man rises or falls; which may be things whereby he is characterized exclusively of his ancestors; and it may be that his ancestors are mentioned in such a manner that imperfection shall attach to him by reason of the blaming of them. respecting this there is no disagreement among the lexicologists, except IKt [whose objection see in what follows]: (Abu-l-'Abbás, O:) or (accord. to some, S) grounds of pretension to respect on account of the honourable deeds or qualities of one's ancestors, &c., ( حَسَبٌ , S, Msb, K,) and eminence, or nobility, ( شَرَفٌ ,) in which one glories. (K.) You say, فُلَانٌ كَرِيمُ العِرْضِ Such a one is generous, or noble, in respect of حَسَب : and هُوَ ذُو عِرْضٍ he is a possessor of حَسَب ; and of شَرَف . (TA.) Sometimes, Ancestors are meant by it. (A'Obeyd, K.) Thus you say, شَتَمَ فُلَانٌ عِرْضَ فُلَانٍ , meaning Such a one spoke evil of the ancestors of such a one. (A'Obeyd.) And فُلَانٌ جَرِبُ العِرْضِ Such a one is base, or ignoble, in respect of ancestry. (TA.) IKt disallows this signification, asserting عِرْضٌ to have no other signification than those of a man's نَفْس and his بَدَن : (O, * TA:) but I Amb says that this is an error; as is shown by the saying of Aboo-Miskeen Ed-Dárimee, 1 in which عِرْض cannot be syn. with بَدَن and جِسْم , for, were it so, it would involve a contradiction; the meaning being only Many a person meagre in respect of his body is noble [or great] in respect of his ancestry; [and fat in respect of the body, meagre in respect of grounds of pretension to honour on account of the honourable deeds or qualities of his ancestors, &c.:] and by Mohammad's using the expression دَمُهُ وَعِرْضُهُ ; for if عِرْض were [here] syn. with نَفْس , it had sufficed to say دمه without عرضه . (O, TA.) رُبَّ مَهْزُولٍ سَمِينٌ عِرْضُهُ | وَسَمِينِ الجِسْمِ مَهْزُولُ الحَسَبْ Also A natural disposition that is commended. (IAth, K.) And A good action. (TA.) Also One who speaks evil of men ( يَعْتَرِضُهُمْ ) falsely; (O, K;) applied to a man: and so with عِرْضَنٌ applied to a woman: (O, K: *) so too ة applied to a man, and with عَرْضَنٌ to a woman. (TA.)

Core sense — a thing that befalls one, an accident; worldly goods; a thing that is not permanentgenerated

1

A thing that happens to, befalls, or occurs to, a man, such as disease and the like, as disquietude of mind, or a state of distraction of the mind or attention; or a misfortune, such as death, disease, and the like; or an event that happens to a man by which he is tried; or a thing that happens to a man by which he is impeded, such as disease, or a theft; or a bane, or cause of mischief, that occurs in a thing; and so عَارِضٌ. Both also mean an accident of any kind. Plural أَعْرَاضٌ.

1.1the opinion that comes to you without thought is better than the one that comes to you forcedمَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ الرَّأْىِ عَرَضًا خَيْرٌ مِمَّا جَآءَكَ مُسْتَكْرَهًا

A thing's befalling, or hitting, unexpectedly. (I follow the reading of the O, which is that of the K as given in the TA and in my manuscript copy of the K, أَنْ يُصِيبَ الشَّىْءُ عَلَى غِرَّةٍ, in preference to that in the CK, أَنْ تُصِيبَ الشَّىْءَ عَلَى غِرَّةٍ.)

You say أَصَابَهُ سَهْمُ عَرَضٍ and سَهْمٌ عَرَضٌ and حَجَرُ عَرَضٍ and حَجَرٌ عَرَضٌ: a random arrow, and a random stone — or an arrow, and a stone, aimed at another — hit him. What hits, or falls upon, a man without anyone's shooting it or casting it is not so termed.

I became attached to her accidentally, without intending it, when she presented herself to me without my seeking itعُلِّقْتُهَا عَرَضًا

1.2figurative · مجاز

A thing that is not permanent: so in the conventional language of the Muslim theologians; opposed to جَوْهَرٌ. Hence they applied it figuratively to a thing that has no permanence except in, or by, the substance — in the language of old logicians, an accident; an essential, and an accidental (that is, non-essential), property or quality; what modern logicians call a mode, whether an essential mode or an accidental mode, only the latter being termed by them “an accident” — such as colour, and taste.

Or, in the conventional language of the Muslim theologians (المُتَكَلِّمُون, explained in the TA as the philosophers, from whom, however, they are generally distinguished), a thing that subsists in, or by, another thing; as colours, tastes, smells, sounds, powers, and wills.

Or, in philosophy, a thing that exists in its subject, or substance, and ceases from it without the substance becoming impaired or annihilated; and also such as does not cease from it: the former kind being such as tawniness caused by an altered state of the body, yellowness of complexion, and the motion of a moving thing; the latter kind such as the blackness of pitch, and of the beads called سَبَج, and of the crow.

1.3

Hence, an appertenance of any kind.

1.4the world is a present frail good: the righteous and the unrighteous eat of itالدُّنْيَا عَرَضٌ حَاضِرٌ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا البَرُّ وَالفَاجِرُ

Hence also, the frail goods of the present world or state, and what a man acquires of them, so called as not being permanent; or worldly goods or commodities of whatever kind, with fet-h to the ر; and any property or wealth, little or much, is so called, or is called عَرَضُ الدُّنْيَا. See also عَرْضٌ, explained as meaning a commodity, or commodities, or goods.

richness is not from the abundance of worldly goods; richness is only richness of the soulلَيْسَ الغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ العَرَضِ إِنَّمَا الغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ
the property, or the like, had escaped himقَدْ فَاتَهُ العَرَضُ

That is, it has no permanence: a tradition related by Sheddád Ibn-Ows.

In another tradition related by the same.

Also العَرْضُ, but the former is the more approved. It is from عَرْضُ الجُنْدِ [see عَرَضَ], as one says قَبَضَ قَبْضًا and قَدْ أَلْقَاهُ فِى القَبَضِ, which seems to show that عَرَضٌ properly means مَعْرُوضٌ, as قَبَضٌ means مَقْبُوضٌ.

1.5

Booty; spoil. So in the Kur 9.42; or there it has the meaning that follows.

Qur’ān 9:42 approximate — somewhere between 9:40 and 9:55 Lane cites “Kur ix. 42”
Qur’ān 9:42 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root

If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them. They would indeed swear by Allah, "If we only could, we should certainly have come out with you": They would destroy their own souls; for Allah doth know that they are certainly lying.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.6

The same as مَطْلَبٌ, apparently meaning a thing sought, or desired; an object of desire, rather than a place where a thing is sought.

1.7

The same as طَمَعٌ, apparently meaning a thing that is eagerly desired, or coveted; and also eager desire, or covetousness. Some so explain it as occurring in the saying قَدْ فَاتَهُ العَرَضُ mentioned above.

The following verse is also cited as an example:

shāhid
مَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو بَقَآءً لَا نَفَادَ لَهُفَلَا يَكُنْ عَرَضُ الدُّنْيَا لَهُ شَجَنَا

[Whoever hopes for continuance without ending, let not the eager desire of worldly goods be a cause of anxiety to him.]

1.8

A gift. See also عُرَاضَةٌ.

1.9it is in the condition of possibility of existenceهُوَ عَلَى عَرَضِ الوُجُودِ

That is, عَلَى إِمْكَانِهِ; for على seems to be used here in the sense of فِى, as in some other instances. From أَعْرَضَ لَهُ, meaning “it became within his power,” and the like.

O ye who believe! When ye go abroad in the cause of Allah, investigate carefully, and say not to any one who offers you a salutation: "Thou art none of a believer!" Coveting the perishable goods of this life: with Allah are profits and spoils abundant. Even thus were ye yourselves before, till Allah conferred on you His favours: Therefore carefully investigate. For Allah is well aware of all that ye do.

After them succeeded an (evil) generation: They inherited the Book, but they chose (for themselves) the vanities of this world, saying (for excuse): "(Everything) will be forgiven us." (Even so), if similar vanities came their way, they would (again) seize them. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them, that they would not ascribe to Allah anything but the truth? and they study what is in the Book. But best for the righteous is the home in the Hereafter. Will ye not understand?

8:67

It is not fitting for a prophet that he should have prisoners of war until he hath thoroughly subdued the land. Ye look for the temporal goods of this world; but Allah looketh to the Hereafter: And Allah is Exalted in might, Wise.

9:42

Let those who find not the wherewithal for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah gives them means out of His grace. And if any of your slaves ask for a deed in writing (to enable them to earn their freedom for a certain sum), give them such a deed if ye know any good in them: yea, give them something yourselves out of the means which Allah has given to you. But force not your maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this life. But if anyone compels them, yet, after such compulsion, is Allah, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (to them),

1I set such a one as an obstacle to such a thing, or as a butt for itجَعَلْتُ فُلَانًا عُرْضَةً لِكَذَا

It is of the measure فُعْلَةٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعولٌ, like قُبْضَةٌ, and is applied to a thing set as an obstacle in the way of a thing, and also to a thing that is exposed to a thing, or that is set up as a butt, like the butt of archers.

That is, نَصَبْتُهُ لَهُ.

Or a person to whom men address themselves to do evil, and whom they revile.

In the Kur 2.224, meaning نَصْبًا, which admits both meanings, of an obstacle and of a butt. Or: do not make God an obstacle to the performance of your oaths to be pious, to fear God, and to make peace between men; or do not make God an obstacle, because of your oaths, to your being pious and the like; or do not make the swearing by God an obstacle to your being pious; and Zj says the like of this.

Or عُرْضَةٌ means intervention with respect to good and evil, (Abu-l-'Abbás) and the meaning is: do not intervene by swearing by God every little while, so as not to be pious and the like; or do not make God an object of your oaths, by ordinary and frequent swearing by Him, or a butt for your oaths, like the butt of archers, in order that you may be pious; for the habitual swearer emboldens himself against God, and is not pious. Or, as some say, the meaning is: do not make the mention of God a means of strengthening your oaths.

A she-camel that takes to a side, or tract, other than the one her rider would travel, which is why she is so called; or that goes to the right and left and does not keep to the road; or that has not been trained; or that has received some training but is not thoroughly trained; or such as is termed عُرْضِيَّة: stubborn in the head but submissive in her middle part, that is loaded, and then the other loaded camels are driven on; and if a man rides her, she goes straight forward, and her rider has no power of doing as he pleases with her. To such a camel 'Omar likened a class of his subjects.

'Amr Ibn-Ahmar El-Báhilee says:

5

6I knew that from the intended sense of his speechعَرَفْتُ ذَٰلِكَ فِى عَرُوضِ كَلَامِهِ

عَرُوضُ كَلَامٍ means the meaning, or intended sense, of speech; the same as فَحْوَاهُ and مَعْنَاهُ; and so مِعْرَاضُ كَلَامٍ, of which the plural is مَعَارِيضُ and مَعَارِضُ.

Also فِى مِعْرَاضِ كَلَامِهِ; and in the same way مَعَارِضِ كَلَامِهِ and عَرَفْتُهُ فِى مِعْرَاضِ كَلَامِهِ and فى لَحْنِ كلام and فى نَحْوِ كلامه mean the same. [See also مِعْرَاضٌ.]

[See also عِرَاضٌ.]

8

عَرُوضٌ also means the transverse pole, or piece of wood, which is in the middle of a tent, and which is its main support. (Aboo-Is-hák)

8.1

And hence the middle portion, or foot, of a verse (Aboo-Is-hák); for the بَيْت of poetry is built on the pattern of the بَيْت in which the Arabs live, which is made of pieces of cloth; and as the عروض of the latter is its strongest part, so should that of the former be; and accordingly we see that a deficiency in the ضَرْب is more frequent than in the عروض. (Aboo-Is-hák)

It is the last foot of the first half, or hemistich, of a verse, whether perfect or altered. Some make it to be the طَرَائِق of poetry, and its عَمُود, likening it to these parts of the tents. It is feminine, or sometimes masculine. The plural is أَعَارِيضُ, contrary to rule, as though it were the plural of إِعْرِيضٌ; and one may use أَعَارِضُ as its plural.

8.2

Also the science of prosody, or versification: the science of the rules by which the sound measures of Arabic verse are known from the broken ones; the standard by which verse is measured, because it is compared with it, or because what is correct in measure is thereby distinguished from what is broken. (The K adds some other reasons, too weak, in my opinion, to deserve mention: I think it more likely that عروض is used by a synecdoche for شِعْرٌ, as being the most essential part of it, and then, with a word left out, for عِلْمُ العَرُوضِ, which is the more common term for the science.)

It is feminine, and has no plural, because it is a generic noun.

Nounعَارِضٌ17 senses · 4 main

Core sense — appearing; a collection of clouds in the horizon; the side of the cheek; an obstaclegenerated

1

Showing its breadth, or width (see عَرَضَ, first meaning); or having its side apparent; and in the same way مُعْرِضٌ, which see: anything showing its breadth, or width, or its side. Hence both also mean appearing. (See again عَرَضَ.)

1.1

A collection of clouds appearing, or presenting itself, or extending sideways, in the horizon; overpeering. Or a collection of clouds seen in a side of the sky, like the one termed جُلْبٌ, except that this is white, whereas that inclines to blackness, and is narrower and more distant. Or a collection of clouds that comes over against one in the sky, unexpectedly. (El-Báhilee)

Or a collection of clouds that appears, or presents itself, or extends sideways, in the sky like a mountain, before it covers the sky, is called سَحَابٌ عَارِضٌ, and also حَبِىٌّ; plural عَوَارِضُ. [See also عَرْضٌ and عِرْضٌ.]

In the phrase عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا in the Kur 46.23, ممطرنا means مُمْطِرٌ لَنَا; for, being determinate, it cannot be an adjective qualifying عَارِضٌ, which is indeterminate; and the Arabs do the like of this only with nouns derived from verbs, so that you may not say هٰذَا رَجُلٌ غُلَامُنَا.

1.2

See also عَرْضٌ, in the sentence beginning with “A mountain,” in two places.

1.3

And again, shortly after.

1.4

A gift appearing from a person. [See an example under عَائِضٌ.]

1.5a doubt, or dubiousness, occurring, or intervening, in the mindشُبْهَةٌ عَارِضَةٌ

Happening; befalling; occurring; an occurrence, such as a fever and the like. A bane, or cause of mischief, that occurs in a thing; and so عَرَضٌ, which see.

In the saying of 'Alee, يَقْدَحُ الشَّكُّ فِى قَلْبِهِ بِأَوَّلِ عَارِضَةٍ مِنْ شُبْهَةٍ, the word عارضة may perhaps be a maṣdar, or a quasi-maṣdar, like عَاقِبَةٌ and عَافِيَةٌ, so that the meaning may be: Doubt makes an impression upon his heart at the first occurrence of dubiousness.

1.6

Whatever faces one, of a thing (so in some copies of the K; in other copies this meaning is given to عَارِضَةٌ); or anything facing one.

1.7

Intervening; preventing: an intervening, or a preventing, thing; an obstacle; a thing that keeps one from going on, such as a mountain and the like. Its application to a cloud, and some other applications referred to above, may come from this meaning, or from the one just before it, or from the first.

1.8

The same as عُرْضٌ in the first of the meanings given to that word above; and so عَارِضَةٌ. (The former according to some copies of the K, the latter according to others, but both according to the TA.)

1.9

What appears, of the face, or of the mouth, according to the L, when one laughs. (In some copies of the K, and in the O, this meaning is given to عَارِضَةٌ.)

1.10figurative · مجاز

The side of the cheek of a man; and so عَارِضَةٌ; the two sides of the two cheeks of a man being called the عَارِضَانِ, or the عَارِضَتَانِ, the two sides of the face. Or the side of the face; and so عَرُوضٌ, the two together being called the عَارِضَانِ; or this last means the two sides of the mouth, or the two sides of the beard. Plural عَوَارِضُ.

خَفِيفُ العَارِضَيْنِ means light, or scanty, in the hair of the two sides of the cheeks and of the beard, a word being left out.

But in a certain tradition, in which a happy quality of a man is said to be خِفَّةُ عَارِضَيْهِ, the meaning is said to be his briskness in praising and glorifying God; that is, his never ceasing to move the sides of his cheeks in praising and glorifying God. (IAth, on the authority of El-Khattábee; and O.)

1.11

The side of the neck, the two sides of it being called the عَارِضَانِ; plural as above. [See also عُرْضٌ, near the beginning.]

1.12

The tooth that is in the side of the mouth (so in some copies of the K; in other copies this meaning is given to عَارِضَةٌ); plural as above. Or the side of the mouth; and so, as some say, عَوَارِضُ, meaning the teeth in the side of the mouth; for you say اِمْرَأَةٌ نَقِيَّةُ العَارِضِ and العَوَارِضِ, a woman clean in the side of the mouth.

Jereer describes a woman as polishing her عَارِضَانِ with a branch of a beshámeh, a tree whose twigs are used for cleaning the teeth; meaning, as Aboo-Nasr says, the teeth that come after the central incisors, these last not being of the عوارض. Or, according to ISk, عَارِضٌ means the canine tooth and the ضِرْس [or bicuspid] next to it; or, as some say, what are between the central incisor and the first ضرس [which is a bicuspid].

Some say that the عوارض are the central incisors, each being in the side of the mouth; others, that they are the teeth next to the sides of the mouth; others, that they are four teeth next to the canine teeth and followed by the أَضْرَاس; Lh says that they are of the اضراس; others, that they are the teeth between the central incisors and the اضراس; and others, that they are eight teeth in each side, four above and four below.

2

عَارِضٌ as applied to a she-camel, or to a sheep or goat: see the paragraph next following.

3

Giving a thing, or the giver of a thing, in exchange for another thing.

3.1

A reviewer of an army, or of a body of soldiers, who makes them pass by him and examines their state.

Core sense — a want, or object of need; a camel slaughtered because of disease; a cross-beamgenerated

1

See عَارِضٌ in eight places, from the sentence beginning with شُبْهَةٌ عَارِضَةٌ.

1.1such a one is running without any need that has arisen for himفُلَانٌ رَكُوضٌ بِلَا عَرُوضٍ

A want; an object of need; and in the same way عَرُوضٌ, a want, or an object of need, that has occurred to one. Plural of the former, عَوَارِضُ. عَرُوض has the meaning given above in the following saying.

(S, O. In the K, in the place of ركوض, we find رَبُوضٌ, which I think a mistake.)

[In Freytag's Arab. Prov. 1.555 we find رَكُوضٌ فِى كُلِّ عَرُوضٍ, explained as meaning Running swiftly in every region, and said to be applied to one who spreads evil, or mischief, among men.]

2the sons of such a one eat none but camels slaughtered on account of diseaseبَنُو فُلَانٍ لَا يَأْكُلُونَ إِلَّا العَوَارِضَ

A she-camel having a fracture or a disease, for which reason it is slaughtered; and so عَارِضٌ; and in the same way a sheep or goat. Plural عَوَارِضُ. It is opposed to عَبِيطٌ, which is one slaughtered without having any malady.

This is said in reproach of them for not slaughtering camels except when disease has befallen them.

2.1

عَوَارِضُ, applied to camels, also means that eat the trees called عِضَاه wherever they find them.

3

[A thing lying, or extending, across, or athwart; any cross piece of wood and the like: so in the present day.]

3.1

The lintel, or piece of wood, which holds the عِضَادَتَانِ [or two side-posts] above, in a door, corresponding to the أُسْكُفَّة [or threshold]; the upper piece of wood in which the door turns. (O, K. In some copies of the latter this meaning is wrongly given to عَارِضٌ.)

The عَارِضَتَانِ of a door are also said to be the same as the عِضَادَتَانِ.

3.2

A rafter, or a single one of the عَوَارِض of a roof. (S, O, K; but in some copies of the last, and in the TA, this meaning is wrongly given to عَارِضٌ.)

The عوارض of a house are the pieces of wood of its roof, which are laid across; one of them is called عَارِضَةٌ. And عَارِضٌ [a mistranscription for عَوَارِضُ] also means the سَقَائِف [or pieces of wood which form the roof] of a vehicle of the kind called مَحْمِل.

4such a one is possessed of hardinessفُلَانٌ ذُو عَارِضَةٍ

Also, or عَارِضٌ, or both: hardiness. This is what is meant by the statement in some copies of the K that عَارِضٌ is also synonymous with عَارِضَةٌ; for in some copies of the K, after several explanations of العَارِضُ, we find وَالعَارِضَةُ وَالسِّنُّ الَّتِى فِى عُرْضِ الفَمِ, whereas in other copies the و before السِّنُّ is omitted.

Also courage, or courage and energy; power of speech; clearness, or chasteness, of speech, and eloquence; or the first means intuitive knowledge; or determination, resolution, or decision; and the trimming of speech or language and the removal of its faults; and good judgment.

Also ذو عَارِضٍ; and possessed of courage, or of courage and energy, and of power of speech; or of eloquence and clearness, or chasteness, of speech.

such a one is hardyفُلَانٌ شَدِيدُ العَارِضَةِ

Also شَدِيدُ العَارِضِ; and courageous, or courageous and energetic.

Core sense — a headless, featherless arrow; an oblique, or ambiguous, way of speakinggenerated

1

An arrow having no feathers and no head, slender at the two ends and thick in the middle, shaped like the wooden implement with which cotton is separated from its seeds, or is separated and loosened by striking with it the string of a bow, and which goes sideways. (In the O and TA, مُسْتَوِيًا, apparently a mistranscription for مُسْتَعْرِضًا.)

It strikes with its عَرْض [or middle part, unless this is a mistake for عُرْض, or side], not with its end. (In my copy of the Mgh, عرض is written without any vowel-sign.)

Sometimes it strikes with its thick middle part in such a way that it breaks and crushes what it strikes, so that this is like a thing beaten to death; and if the object of the chase is near it, it strikes it with the place of the head. If it makes a hole, the game struck with it may be eaten; but not if it strikes with a middle part.

2figurative · مجازin oblique, indirect, obscure, ambiguous, or equivocal modes of speech there is ample room to avoid lyingإِنَّ فِى المَعَارِيضِ لَمَنْدُوحَةً عَنِ الكَذِبِ

An oblique, indirect, obscure, ambiguous, or equivocal way of speaking; as when you ask a man, “Have you seen such a one?” and he, having seen him and not wanting to lie, answers, “Such a one is seen.” From عَرَّضَ, which see. (Msb, El-Munáwee — the latter in explaining a tradition, given below.)

The same as تَوْرِيَةٌ [meaning as above; or the pretending of one thing and meaning of another; or the use of a word, an expression, or a phrase, which has an obvious meaning, while another meaning is intended by it which it will bear but which is contrary to the obvious one]; the original meaning of this word is concealment. Or language one part of which resembles another in the meanings. (In the TA this last explanation immediately follows the example cited above from the Msb, from which it seems that the explanation is itself something of a معراض, meaning what it does not clearly express.)

Or المَعَارِيضُ فِى الكَلَامِ — thus, in the plural form, in two copies of the S and in the TA — means التَّوْرِيَةُ بِالشَّىْءِ عَنِ الشَّىْءِ [the pretending, or making believe, of a thing instead of another thing]; and مَعَارِضُ الكَلَامِ and أَعْرَاضُهُ mean the same as مَعَارِيضُهُ. [مَعَارِضُ is a contraction of مَعَارِيضُ, as مِعْرضٌ is said to be of مِعْرَاضٌ when synonymous with it.]

Said in a proverb, and a tradition. Ample room, or freedom, is سَعَةٌ; or, as is said in the L in art. ندح, that which makes one have no need of lying.

One says also عَرَفْتُهُ فِى مِعْرَاضِ كَلَامِهِ, explained under عَرُوضٌ, which see in three places, and فِى مِعْرَضِ كَلَامِهِ, dropping the ا. Some of the learned say that this last is a metaphor from مِعْرَضٌ, the “garment in which girls are displayed,” as though the meaning were: I knew it from the form, and guise, and mould, of his speech; but this does not hold for all kinds of speech, for it may not be said in cases of reviling — indeed it would be bad there to use the garment of adornment as a metaphor; so the proper thing is to say that مِعْرَضٌ is a contraction of مِعْرَاضٌ.
