Core sense — equity, justice; a ransom, an equivalent; one who acts justlygenerated

1God commands equity in recompensing: good with good, and evil with evilإِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَٱلْإِحْسَانِ

Equity, justice, or rectitude; the contrary of جَوْرٌ, that is, the same as قَصْدٌ in affairs; and قِسْطٌ and سَوِيَّةٌ and اِسْتِقَامَةٌ; and a thing that is established in people's minds as being right. The same is expressed by مَعْدِلَةٌ, مَعْدَلَةٌ, عَدَالَةٌ and عُدُولَةٌ. Or, as some say, it is the mean between excess and falling short.

Er-Rāghib: it is of two sorts. One is absolute, such that reason requires the inference of its goodness; this is never abrogated, and is never described as a mode of transgression — as doing good to one who does good to you, and refraining from harming one who refrains from harming you. The other is such as is known to be عَدْل by the law, and this may sometimes be abrogated — as retaliation, fines for wounds and maimings, and the taking of the property of the apostate. This last is what is meant by the saying in the Qur'ān 16:92.

That is, also the requiting of good with more good, and of evil with less evil. [See also Form 4 in the article حسن.]

Er-Rāghib says of عَدَالَةٌ and مَعْدِلَةٌ that each is a term requiring the inference of equality, and is used with regard to correlation.

the governor, or ruler, largely extended his equity, or justiceبَسَطَ الوَالِى عَدْلَهُ

Or المَعْدِلَةِ, that is, من اهل العَدْلِ.

and make two persons of intelligence from among you witnessesوَأَشْهِدُوا ذَوَىْ عَدْلٍ مِنْكُمْ

In the Qur'ān 65:2; Sa'eed Ibn-El-Museiyib says it means ذَوَىْ عَقْلٍ [but this rendering I think questionable].

1.1

Also repayment, requital, compensation, or recompense.

1.2or the ransom for it by fastingأَوْ عَدْلُ ذٰلِكَ صِيَامًا

And a ransom, when regard is had to the meaning of equality, or equivalence.

In the Qur'ān 5:96. But this is generally explained as meaning or the like of it in fasting; that is, instead of feeding a number of poor men, one shall fast the like number of days.

And so, according to some, in the saying occurring in a tradition, لَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهُ صَرْفٌ وَلَا عَدْلٌ; for its various explanations see the article صرف.

1.3he gave him by measureأَعْطَاهُ بِالعَدْلِ

And measure; the same as كَيْلٌ.

1.4

En-Nadr: an obligatory act, or divine ordinance.

1.5

And a voluntary act.

2

Also one who acts equitably, justly, or rightly; and so عَادِلٌ; or that is its meaning, while the first particularly means a man approved and satisfactory in testimony, being originally a maṣdar: a man whose testimony is approved and available, allowable, or legally admissible; also عَادِلٌ; a man whose saying, and whose judgment, or judicial decision, are approved.

Ibráheem: one from whom nothing has appeared that occasions doubt, suspicion, or evil opinion.

Being originally a maṣdar, it means ذُو عَدْلٍ; or, according to IJ, it is an intensive adjective, as though meaning possessing every kind of عَدْل.

One says رَجُلٌ عَدْلٌ and اِمْرَأَةٌ عَدْلٌ and عَدْلَةٌ — the last mentioned by IJ — and رَجُلَانِ عَدْلٌ and عَدْلَانِ and قَوْمٌ عَدْلٌ and نِسْوَةٌ عَدْلٌ and قَوْمٌ عُدُولٌ.

عُدُولٌ is the plural of عَدْلٌ, or of عَادِلٌ; and عَدْلٌ, used in a plural sense, is an ism jamʿ of عَادِلٌ, like تَجْرٌ [of تَاجِرٌ] and شَرْبٌ [of شَارِبٌ]; or رِجَالٌ عَدْلٌ and نِسْوَةٌ عَدْلٌ mean رِجَالٌ ذَوُو عَدْلٍ and نِسْوَانٌ ذَوَاتُ عَدْلٍ.

2.1He whom desire does not make incline, so as to deviate from the right course in judgmentالعَدْلُ

That is, not in the utmost degree of goodness, nor in the extreme degree of badness.

2.3

See also عِدْلٌ, through most of that paragraph.

3he has been consigned to the hands of 'Adlوُضِعَ عَلَى يَدَىْ عَدْلٍ

عَدْلٌ is also the name of a certain chief of the body of armed men called شُرَط, or شُرْطَة, of a تُبَّع [or King of El-Yemen], who, when he wanted a man killed, handed him over to this person.

This was afterwards said of anything of which one had given up hope. [Meyd mentions عَلَى يَدَىْ عَدْلٍ as a proverb, without وُضِعَ; see Freytag's Arab. Prov. 2, 80.]

Nounعِدْلٌ2 senses · 1 main

Core sense — the like of a thing, an equal; half a load, one of two counterbalancing loadsgenerated

1I have the like of your boy, or young manعِنْدِى عِدْلُ غُلَامِكَ

The like of a thing; also عَدْلٌ; the same as مِثْلٌ and نَظِيرٌ [which mean the same, or the equal]; and so عَدِيلٌ.

Er-Rāghib: عَدْلٌ and عِدْلٌ are nearly the same, but the first is used of what is perceived mentally, as in the phrase of the Qur'ān 5:96, أَوْ عَدْلُ ذٰلِكَ صِيَامًا [mentioned under عَدْلٌ], while عِدْلٌ and عَدِيلٌ are used of what is perceived by the senses, such as things weighed, things numbered and things measured.

Ibn-'Ámir, however, read او عِدْلُ ذلك; and Ks and the people of El-Medeeneh read it with fetḥ [that is, عَدْلُ].

Or عِدْلُ الشَّىْءِ, with kesr, means the like of the thing in kind, or in quantity or measure or the like, or also in quantity or measure or the like; and IF says, in weight. And عَدْلُهُ, with fetḥ, means its like, or what will stand in its place, of a thing of a different kind, as in the phrase of the Qur'ān أَوْ عَدْلُ ذٰلِكَ صِيَامًا mentioned above; عَدْل being originally a maṣdar.

Akh says that العِدْلُ, with kesr, means المِثْلُ; and that العَدْلُ, with fetḥ, is originally a maṣdar, but is made a noun to denote المِثْلُ, in order to distinguish it from the عِدْل of goods or commodities [which will be explained below].

Fr says that العِدْلُ, with kesr, is the like, as in the sayings that follow.

the like of your sheep, or goatعِدْلُ شَاتِكَ

But you say العَدْلُ, with fetḥ to the ع, when you mean the equal in value, of what is different in kind; though it is sometimes pronounced with kesr by some of the Arabs, apparently by an error on their part.

Or some allow saying عِنْدِى عِدْلُ غُلَامِكَ in the sense of I have the like of your boy, or young man, [and apparently عَدْلُهُ also,] and عَدْلُهُ, with fetḥ only, as meaning his value.

But Zj says that العَدْلُ and العِدْلُ both mean the like, whether of the same kind or of a different kind; and if someone makes a mistake, he should not say that some of the Arabs have erred.

The plural of عِدْلٌ is, by common consent, أَعْدَالٌ; and that of عَدِيلٌ is عُدَلَآءُ.

1.1they are not witnesses whose testimony is approvable, but equalized loads of merchandiseمَا هُمْ عُدُولٌ وَلٰكِنْ عُدُولٌ

Also the half of a load, such as is on either of the two sides of the camel; or a burden borne on one side of a beast and made equal in weight to another burden. Plural, of few, أَعْدَالٌ; of many, عُدُولٌ.

عَدِيلٌ means the equal of a person in weight, and in measure or size or the like, in the vehicle called مَحْمِل.

Sb says that it means a human being who is the equal of another in weight, distinguishing it from عِدْلٌ, which, he says, is applied only to goods, or commodities; but عَدِيلَتَانِ means two sacks, because each counterbalances the other.

So said of the عُدُول of an evil judicial decision.

See عَدْلٌ, in two places.

It is a maṣdar of عَدُلَ said of a witness, like عُدُولَةٌ, and means the quality of a witness such as is termed عَدْلٌ.

It is explained as a quality whose observance requires guarding, habitually and openly, against whatever falls short of the requirements of manly virtue, or moral goodness. Such open falling short is not brought about by small lapses or falls into wrongdoing, or by perversion of speech, because mistake and forgetfulness may be supposed as the causes of these, and interpretation not according to the obvious meaning; it is when such is the known and repeated practice of the person.

Regard is to be had to the goodness, or honesty, of every individual, and to his usual practice in respect of his clothing, his dealing in selling and buying, the conveyance of goods, and other things; and when he does what is not suitable to him, without necessity, his testimony is impugned; otherwise it is not.

And the plural — apparently a mistake for the ism waḥda — of عَدَوْلِيَّةٌ, which means certain ships or boats, or a sort of ship or boat; or it is an adjective applied to certain ships or boats.

So called as being of عَدَوْلَى, meaning a city of El-Bahreyn — not, as would be imagined from the context in the K, the tree said to be so called. It is mentioned in the poetry of Tarafeh, in verse 4 of his Mo'allakah, and is so explained by As.

Or the word means old; or large. Or it is so called as being of a place named عَدَوْلَاة, of the measure فَعَوْلَاة; or of عَدَوْل, a man who used to build ships or boats; or of a people who used to alight and settle in Hejer.
