maṣdarتَعْجِيلٌ

Core sense — he hastened it; he paid it in ready money, or in advancegenerated

It generally relates to some inanimate object.

Qurʾān 38:15. Some say the portion meant is of punishment; but Saʿeed Ibn-Jubeyr says it is of Paradise.

I brought the property to him quickly, or hastened its coming to himعَجَّلْتُ إِلَيْهِ المَالَ

would that you hastened, for your husbandless woman, the early portion of foodلَوْ عَجَّلْتَ بِأَيِّمِكَ العَجُولَ

Maṣdar as above.

A proverb; the early portion of food is called عَجُول, or the right reading may be العِجَّوْلَ. The meaning is عَجِّلْ بِهَا الزَّوَاجَ: hasten, for her, that is, for your husbandless woman, marriage.

you supplied, or fed, with the early portion of foodعَجَّلْتُمْ

Like لَهَّنْتُمْ; that food is called لُهْنَة, and also عَجُول or عِجَّوْل and the like.

For لَهَّنْتُمْ, Golius appears to have read لَهَّيْتُمْ, which is clearly wrong.

2.1.2he made his preparation of dried curd into what are termed عَجَاجِيلعجّل أَقِطَهُ

Maṣdar as above; تعجّلهُ has the same meaning. The dried curd is اقط, and the word mentioned above is the plural of عُجَّالٌ.

If Allah were to hasten for men the ill (they have earned) as they would fain hasten on the good,- then would their respite be settled at once. But We leave those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, in their trespasses, wandering in distraction to and fro.

17:18

If any do wish for the transitory things (of this life), We readily grant them - such things as We will, to such person as We will: in the end have We provided Hell for them: they will burn therein, disgraced and rejected.

18:58

Qurʾān 13:7.

Qurʾān 22:46 and 29:53.

he hastened himselfاستعجل بِنَفْسِهِ
4.1.1he urged him to haste by going before himاعجلهُ

Hence it is also explained as سَبَقَهُ: he preceded him, or it; he had, got, or took precedence of him, or it; he was beforehand with him, or anticipated him. So too عجّلهُ and استعجلهُ.

عَجِلَ is made to imply, or as though made to imply, the meaning of سَبَقَ, and so is made transitive like that verb; the phrase means أَعَجِلْتُمْ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّكُمْ. (Ksh)

Aboo-Kheyreh: a calf, the young one of the بَقَرَة, both domestic and wild — the wild being a bovine antelope — from the time when his mother brings him forth until he is a month old.

After that, some say, he is called بَرْغَزٌ when about two months old, and then فَرْقَدٌ. Or he bears this last name while in his first year, and then تَبِيعٌ; in art. سلغ.

IB says the correct account is that while in his first year he is called عِجْلٌ and تَبِيعٌ, then جَذَعٌ, then ثَنِىٌّ, then رَبَاعٍ, then سَدِيسٌ, then سَالِغُ سَنَةٍ and سَالِغُ سَنَتَيْنِ, and so on.

Abu-l-Jarráh: the feminine is formed with ة. The plural of the masculine is عِجَلَةٌ and عُجُولٌ, and, of a small number, أَعْجِلَةٌ and أَعْجَالٌ; [and of the feminine عِجَلٌ]. As for عِجَالٌ as a plural, Mtr says he has not heard it.

The same as عِجْلٌ; feminine with ة, and plural عَجَاجِيلُ.

Core sense — haste; food hastily prepared; clay, or black mudgenerated

1man is composed of hasteخُلِقَ ٱلْإِنْسَانُ مِنْ عَجَلٍ

This word and عَجَلَةٌ are both maṣdars of عَجِلَ, and mean the same as سُرْعَةٌ, the opposite of بُطْءٌ.

Qurʾān 21:38. So Fr says, and Aboo-Is-hák likewise, to show the excess of this quality in him. Or, according to Th, the phrase is inverted, the meaning being that haste is created from man; but IJ rejects this explanation, and another mentioned below.

Th explains the latter as the seeking and pursuing of a thing before its proper time or season, coming from the desire of the soul; and so it is generally condemned in the Qurʾān, so much so that it is said to be from the Devil.

2food hastily prepared and brought before the meal is readyعَجَلٌ

The meal is called غَدَآء. [See also عُجَّالٌ.]

3clay, or earth; also black, or black fetid, mudعَجَلَةٌ

Also clay, or earth, طِينٌ; or black mud, or black fetid mud, حَمْأَةٌ.

That is, both طِينٌ and حَمْأَةٌ.

AO says the first of these two meanings of عَجَلٌ belongs to the dialect of Himyer. IAar says it is what is meant in the phrase of the Qurʾān 21:38 quoted above; but Ibn-ʿArafeh rejects this, and so does Az. Er-Rāghib says that some explain it in that place as stinking black mud, but that their saying is worthless.

(TA.) It is said in the Kur [xxi. 38], خُلِقَ ٱلْإِنْسَانُ مِنْ عَجَلٍ , meaning, it is said, Man is composed of haste; (O;) so says Fr, and in like manner says Aboo-Is-hák; (T, TA;) to denote the excess of this attribute in him: (T, O, TA:) or, accord. to Th, (TA,) the phrase is inverted, the meaning being, haste is created from man; (Msb, TA;) but IJ disapproves this explanation, and also another which will be mentioned in what follows.
