Core sense — the hinder part of a thing; the buttocks; the last foot of a versegenerated

1figurative · مجازthe hinder parts of a womanعَجِيزَةٌ

Also عَجْزٌ, عُجُزٌ, عُجْزٌ, عَجِزٌ, and عِجْزٌ; but the first form is the most chaste.

In the general application it is both feminine and masculine; in the second, restricted application it is feminine, but made masculine by the Benoo-Temeem, or, according to El-Heythemee, feminine only.

The hinder part of a thing, that is, of anything; and particularly the hinder parts, posteriors, buttocks, rump, or croup — what is between the two hips, or what is behind the back — of a man, of a woman, of a camel, and so on.

In its proper application only of a woman, though sometimes of a man by way of comparison.

Plural of عَجُزٌ and of its variants: أَعْجَازٌ, the only plural form; and for عَجِيزَةٌ عَجِيزَاتٌ they do not say عَجَائِزُ [the regular plural of عجيزة] for fear of confusion, since that is the plural of عَجُوزٌ or of عَجُوزَةٌ.

she is indeed large in the hinder partsإِنَّهَا لَعَظيِمَةُ الأَعْجَازِ

Or: they experience difficulties; because the rump, or croup, of a camel is a difficult place to ride upon.

[do not think upon the ends of things whose beginnings have already passed]لَا تَدَبَّرُوا أَعْجَازَ أُمُورٍ قَدْ وَلَّتْ صُدُورُهَا

Said by one of the wise men, Aktham Ibn-Seyfee.

Also read لَا تَتَدَبَّرُوا.

The meaning: when a thing has passed, do not let your minds, or desires, follow after it, regretting what is gone, but be consoled for it, placing your reliance upon God. IAth says it is intended to urge the consideration of the results, or issues, of affairs before entering upon them. [See also دَبَّرَ.]

The same as عَاجِزٌ, q. v.

1.1

An old, or aged, woman; a woman extremely old, or old and weak: so called because of her inability to do many things. This is the most common meaning of the word.

ISk: you should not say عَجُوزَةٌ; or it is a bad form, used by the vulgar; but IAar authorizes it, and IAmb allows it in order to show that the word is feminine, and Yoo is related to have heard it from the Arabs.

Plural عَجَائِزُ, or this is the plural of عَجُوزَةٌ; and عُجُزٌ; and عُجْزٌ, a contraction of عُجُزٌ, occurs in traditions.

[It has a great variety of other meanings, but these occur very rarely, and are therefore to be mentioned in Book 2.]

4the days of the old woman: cold days at the end of winterأَيَّامُ العَجُوزِ

Also called أَيَّامُ العَجُزِ, because they come in the latter part of winter; but the former is the correct name.

According to the usage of the Arabs, five days, whose names are صِنٌّ, صِنَّبْرٌ, وَبْرٌ, مُطْفِئُ الجَمْرِ, and مُكْفِئُ الظَّعْنِ.

Ibn-Kunáseh says they belong to the نَوْء of الصَّرْفَة. [By this is meant the auroral setting of the Twelfth Mansion of the Moon, which, in Central Arabia, about the beginning of the era of the Flight, fell on the 9th of March O. S.; in the modern Egyptian almanacs the ايّام العجوز are said to begin now on the 9th of March N. S., which is now the 26th of February O. S.]

Or, according to Abu-l-Ghowth, they are seven days, named صِنٌّ, صِنَّبْرٌ, وَبْرٌ, الآمِرُ, المُؤْتَمِرُ, المُعَلِّلُ, and مُطْفِئُ الجَمْرِ or مُكْفِئُ الظَّعْنِ; and some reckon مكفئ الظعن an eighth: but most authors hold these names to be post-classical.

According to Esh-Shereeshee, they are seven days: four of the last days of February and three of the first days of March. During these days blew the wind by which the tribe of 'Ád was destroyed.

They are so called because they fall in the latter part of winter; or because an old woman of 'Ád hid herself in a subterranean excavation, from which the wind dragged her out on the eighth day and destroyed her.

Or آمِرٌ and مُؤْتَمِرٌ are the names of the last two days, the former being the sixth and the latter the seventh.

Ibn-Ahmar says — or, according to IB, not Ibn-Ahmar but Aboo-Shibl 'Ásim Ibn-el-Aarábee, as Th says on the authority of IAar, or Aboo-Shibl 'Osm Ibn-Wahb Et-Temeemee —
