Or he contracted the part between his eyes; or he grinned, showing his teeth, while frowning or looking stern. Synonymous with كَلَحَ.
Or عبّس is intensive, عبّس وَجْهَهُ meaning he did so much; or عبّس alone means he had [or made] a hateful face. But when a man displays his teeth, or grins, the adjective كَالِحٌ is applied to him.
In the same way تعبّس means تَجَهَّمَ, that is, he showed a sour, crabbed, or austere face; and تَقَطَّبَ [which is syn. with عَبَسَ].
Lane cites “Bd in lxxvi. 10” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
