Core sense — thirst; the interval between two waterings of camels; a lifetimegenerated

1

Thirst: [or most violent thirst: or the slightest degree of thirst.] It is a noun from ظَمِئَ in both of its senses.

Plural أَظْمَآءٌ.

1.1figurative · مجاز

[And a desire, or longing, to meet with a person. See Form 1.]

1.2there remained of his life only a littleمَا بَقِىَ مِنْ عُمُرِهِ إِلَّا ظِمْءُ الحِمَارِ

And the time, or interval, between two drinkings, or waterings, when camels come to water; also the keeping of camels away from the water [during that interval, i. e.] until the extreme limit of the time of coming to it. Plural أَظْمَآءٌ.

The shortest ظِمْءٌ of camels is the one called غِبٌّ: they come to the water one day and return, spend a day in the place of pasture, and come to the water [again] on the third day; the interval between their two drinkings is called a ظِمْء. This is during the greatest heat.

But when Suheyl [i. e. Canopus] rises [at dawn, which it did in Central Arabia, about the beginning of the era of the Flight, on the 4th of August, Old Style], they lengthen the ظِمْء, so that the camels stay two days in the place of pasture and come to the water on the fourth day; and one says وَرَدَتْ رِبْعًا. Then follow the خِمْس and the سِدْس up to the عِشْر, and the interval between their two drinkings is called ظِمْءٌ, whether long or short.

Literally, only the interval between the two drinkings of the ass; because no beast bears thirst for a shorter time than the ass, which in summer comes to the water twice every day.

1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe period from birth to deathالظِّمْءُ
