maṣdarطُولٌ طَوْلٌmuḍāriʿيَطُولُ
Core sense — it became long, or tall; he surpassed him in height or bountygenerated
1.1it became extended along the surface of the ground—طَالَ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأَرْضِ
Some say it belongs to the class of قَرُبَ, made to agree in form with its opposite, which is قَصُرَ; others say it belongs to the class of قَالَ, first person طُلْتُ, said to be originally طَوُلْتُ, because one says طَوِيلٌ and not طَائِلٌ when using it as an intransitive verb..
it became extended upwards towards the sky—طَالَ فِى السَّمَآءِ
it became long, or extended—استطال
It (a thing) became long, or extended; it became tall, or high. The fuller phrasings that follow are used to avoid ambiguity.
It is also said of any time that is extended, and of anxiety that clings to a person continually, and the like; see طُولٌ below.
the night became long, or drawn out—طَالَ اللَّيْلُ
the time became long, or was prolonged, for them—طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الأَمَدُ
their lives became long, or were prolonged—تَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ العُمُرُ
the time of the assembly became long—طال المَجْلِسُ
anxiety became prolonged—طال الهَمُّ
for a long time he did so—طَالَمَا فَعَلَ كَذَا
With the restrictive ما; see Har p. 17.
on this sense The example from the Kur 57:15 means: the time was prolonged for them; the example from the Kur 28:45 means: their lives were prolonged.

Qur’ān 57:16 Lane quotes this verse
Has not the Time arrived for the Believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of Allah and of the Truth which has been revealed (to them), and that they should not become like those to whom was given Revelation aforetime, but long ages passed over them and their hearts grew hard? For many among them are rebellious transgressors.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.2I exceeded him, or surpassed him, in height—طُلْتُهُ
When transitive without a particle it is of the class of فَعَلَ, not فَعُلَ, since that class is not transitive.
That is, in الطُّول [tallness]; I overtopped him. It is also said of الطَّوْل [beneficence, excellence, and the like]. See Form 3.
A poet says: [Truly El-Farezdak is a bare rock that has exceeded in height the mountain-goats, so that the mountain-goats do not reach it]
shāhidإِنَّ الفَرَزْدَقَ صَخْرَةٌ عَارِيَةٌطَالَتْ فَلَيْسَ تَنَالُهَا الأَوْعَالُ
; he means طَالَتِ الأَوْعَالَ.
and El-'Abbás exceeded 'Omar in tallness of stature—فَطَالَ العَبَّاسُ عُمَرَ
he excelled him in the grounds of claim to respect or honour—طَالَهُ فِى الحَسَبِ
From a tradition.
This is the explanation of شَرَفَهُ, which in the CK is wrongly given as طاوَلَهُ.
1.3he bestowed a benefit, or a favour, upon him—طال عَلَيْهِ
In this case the verb is of the class of قَالَ; maṣdar طَوْلٌ, تطوّل, and اطال.
he bestowed a benefit, or a favour, upon them—عَلَيْهِمْ
he gave us a thing—تطوّل عَلَيْنَا بِشَىْءٍ
Like تَنَوَّلَ, but Aboo-Mihjen says that the latter is used only of what is good, while the former is sometimes used of good and of evil. See the article نول.

20:86
So Moses returned to his people in a state of indignation and sorrow. He said: "O my people! did not your Lord make a handsome promise to you? Did then the promise seem to you long (in coming)? Or did ye desire that Wrath should descend from your Lord on you, and so ye broke your promise to me?"
21:44
بَلْ مَتَّعْنَا هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْعُمُرُ ۗ أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّا نَأْتِى ٱلْأَرْضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَآ ۚ أَفَهُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَNay, We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win?
57:16

(S, O, K.) It is also said of any time that is extended; and of anxiety that cleaves to one continually; and the like: [see طُولٌ , below:] thus one says طَالَ اللَّيْلُ [The night became long, or protracted]: (TA:) [and thus طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الأَمَدُ , in the Kur lvii. 15, means The time became extended, or prolonged, unto them:] and تَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ العُمُرُ , in the Kur xxviii. 45, means, in like manner, [Life was prolonged unto them; or] their lives became long, or prolonged: (Jel:) and طال المَجْلِسُ The time of the assembly was, or became, extended, or prolonged: (Msb:) and طال الهَمُّ [Anxiety became protracted]. (TA.) [One says also طَالَمَا فَعَلَ كَذَا Long time did he thus; and the like; with the restrictive ما : see Har p. 17.] When trans. [without a particle it is of the class فَعَلَ ; not فَعُلَ , because this is not trans.: (TA:) one says طُلْتُهُ meaning I exceeded him, or surpassed him, in الطُّول [i. e. tallness; or I overtopped him]: and also in الطَّوْل [i. e. beneficence, and excellence, &c.]. (S, O, K.) See 3. A poet says, 1 [Verily El-Farezdak is a bare rock that has exceeded in height the mountain-goats so that the mountain-goats do not reach it]: he means طَالَتِ الأَوْعَالَ . (TA.) And it is said in a trad., فَطَالَ العَبَّاسُ عُمَرَ i. e. And El-'Abbás exceeded 'Omar in tallness of stature. (TA.) And you say, طَالَهُ فِى الحَسَبِ [He excelled him in the grounds of pretension to respect or honour]. (K and TA in explanation of شَرَفَهُ : in the CK [erroneously] طاوَلَهُ .) إِنَّ الفَرَزْدَقَ صَخْرَةٌ عَارِيَةٌ | طَالَتْ فَلَيْسَ تَنَالُهَا الأَوْعَالُ One says also, طال عَلَيْهِ , (S,) or عَلَيْهِمْ , (Msb, K,) the verb in this case being of the class of قَالَ , aor. يَطُولُ , (Msb,) inf. n. طَوْلٌ ; (S, * Msb;) and تطوّل ; (S, Msb, K;) and اطال ; (Msb;) He bestowed, or conferred, a benefit or benefits, or a favour or favours, (S, Msb, K,) upon him, (S,) or upon them. (Msb, K.) And تطوّل عَلَيْنَا بِشَىْءٍ He gave to us a thing; like تَنَوَّلَ ; but the latter is said by Aboo-Mihjen to be used only in relation to good; and the former, sometimes, in relation to good and to evil.
