Er-Rāghib: this is the primary meaning — going, or walking, in an absolute sense; or going, or walking, around, or otherwise.

Also بِالشَّىْءِ, حَوْلَ الكَعْبَةِ, and بِهَا — the latter mentioned also in the S, though not there called a maṣdar — and طَوَفَانٌ, [and perhaps طُوفَانٌ, which see].

اِطَّوَّفَ is a variation of this, maṣdar اِطِّوَّافٌ and استطاف; so also استطافهُ and اطاف بِهِ, or عَلَيْهِ and طوّف, maṣdar تَطْوِيفٌ — or this last means he did so much, or often.

he went round about among the people, or party—طاف بِالقَوْمِ

maṣdar طَوْفٌ, طَوَفَانٌ, and مَطَافٌ; also اطاف. The muḍāriʿ of the former verb occurs in the Qur 56:17 and 76:19, made transitive by means of عَلَى.

I went round the House of God, the Kaabeh, with him; or I made him go round the House—طُفْتُ بِهِ عَلَى البَيْتِ

The common people today say طَوَّفْتُهُ, and they call مُطَوِّف one who makes the circuits round the Kaabeh with a pilgrim and conducts him round to the other sacred objects, or places.

he journeyed round about in the countries, or tracts of country—طاف فِى البِلَادِ

Maṣdar طَوْفٌ and تَطْوَافٌ; and طوّف, maṣdar تَطْوِيفٌ and تَطْوَافٌ, means he did so much, or often. In one place the latter maṣdar is said to be with kesr, so that it is like تِبْيَانٌ; but see that word, which is very irregular. See also تِطْوَافٌ below.

The inf. n. طَوَافٌ primarily signifies, accord. to Er-Rághib, The act of going, or walking, in an absolute sense: or the going, or walking, around, or otherwise. (MF, TA.) [Also A kind of float composed of] inflated water-skins bound together, with wood [or planks] laid on them so as to form a flat roof upon the water; used for going out on the water, for carrying wheat or other provisions and men, and for crossing [rivers]. It is the same as رَمَثٌ, and sometimes it is made of wood, or timber.

Az: a thing on which large rivers are crossed, made of canes and pieces of wood bound one upon another and then bound round with ropes of palm-fibre or palm-leaves so that it cannot come undone; it is then used for embarking and crossing, and is sometimes loaded with a load proportionate to its strength and its thickness.

It is also called عَامَةٌ, without teshdeed on the م. Plural أَطْوَافٌ.

Also the bull around which the oxen turn in the treading [of corn]. [See طَائِفٌ.]

طُوفَانٌ is said to be a plural [or coll. gen. n.], its singular [or ism waḥda] being طُوفَانَةٌ by analogy; so says Akh.

Or it is a maṣdar, like رُجْحَانٌ and نُقْصَانٌ, from طَافَ; so says Abu-l-'Abbás, who says there is no need to look for a singular for it.

Some say it is of the measure فُلْعَانٌ, from طَفَا المَآءُ, meaning the water rose, or became high, the ل being transposed to the place of the ع; but this is strange.

It is said in a tradition about the she-cat that she is not unclean, but is مِنَ الطَّوَّافِينَ عَلَيْكُمْ or الطَّوَّافَاتِ [i.e. of those that go round about waiting upon you]; she is thus put in the category of the slaves. Hence En-Nakha'ee's saying that the she-cat is like some of the people of the house, or tent.

[Ism jamʿ of عَاسٌّ.] Er-Rāghib explains it so, and it is said to mean particularly those who do this by night.

Ibn-'Abbád: also the bull that is next to the extremity, or side, of the كُدْس [or wheat collected together in the place where it is trodden out]. [See طَوْفٌ.]

The first of these is the curved portion of the extremity; for the second, see that word.

Or near [the length of a cubit or] the bone of the fore arm from its [middle portion called the] كَبِد [thus I render قَرِيبٌ مِنْ عَظْمِ الذِّرَاعِ مِنْ كَبِدِهَا, which, I think, can have no other meaning].

Or the طَائِفَانِ are two parts exclusive of the two curved ends: [this last explanation seems to leave one of the limits of each طائف undefined.]

Or, according to AHn, the طائف of the bow is the part beyond its كُلْيَة [which see], above and below, extending to the place where the end of the bow curves.

The plural is طَوَائِفُ.

This occurs in a tradition about a runaway slave; the word apparently means fingers. Some relate the word as طَابَِقًا.

Aboo-Kebeer El-Hudhalee says, meaning, it is said: [The swords fall upon] arms and legs, or hands and feet [of them; but in this case طَوَائِف may be the plural of طَائِفَةٌ]

Or one man, as is said also on the authority of Mujáhid, so that it is synonymous with نَفْسٌ [as meaning a single person, or an individual].

Er-Rāghib says that when a plural or collective number is meant by it, it is what lexicologists call a plural of طَائِفٌ; and when one is meant by it, it may be a plural metonymically used as a singular, or it may be considered as of the class of رَاوِيَةٌ and عَلَّامَةٌ and the like.
