maṣdarاِسْتِطَاعَةٌ إِفْعَالٌmuḍāriʿيَسْطِيعُ يَسْتِيعُ يُسْطِيعُ
Core sense — he was able; he was able to do, or to get, a thinggenerated
10.1he was able; he was able to do a thing, and to get it, and to have it—أَطَاقَ
originally اِسْتِطْوَاعٌ.
In the CK, wrongly, أَطَاعَ, which, however, correctly explains one meaning of استطاع, as will be seen from what follows.
The maṣdar means the same as إِطَاقَةٌ, or as طَاقَةٌ and قُدْرَةٌ. Er-Rāghib: it is said only of a human being [or a rational creature], whereas اطاق is used generally; and its use requires a particular constitution in the agent, the conception of the act, the fitness of the object to be acted upon, and the possession of an instrument when the action needs one, as in writing.
One says also, or they sometimes said, اِسْطَاعَ, with fet-h to the first letter, dropping the ت because it is felt hard to pronounce with the ط, and because they disliked assimilating it into the ط, since the س would then become movent, which it never is.
Hamzeh (that is, Ez-Zeiyát, not Khallád) read, in the Kur 18:96, فَمَا ٱسْطَّاعُوا with idghám, combining two sākin letters. Zj, on the authority of Kh, Yoo, Sb and others, says this reading is incorrect; but Abu-l-'Abbás Ahmad Ibn Mohammad Ibn-'Abd-El-Ghanee Ed-Dimyátee, who died in the year 1116 [of the Flight], and Ibn-El-Jezeree, and El-Háfidh Aboo-'Amr contradict him and hold it allowable.
Akh says that some of the Arabs say اِسْتَاعَ, dropping the ط; Zj holds this not allowable in reading the Kur-án.
And some of the Arabs say أَسْطَاعَ [in the CK, wrongly, يَسْطِيعُ], with the disjunctive ا in the former, meaning أَطَاعَ, muḍāriʿ يُطِيعُ, making the س a substitute for the dropped vowel of the middle radical letter of the verb [اطاع].
For, as Kh and Sb say, أَطَاعَ is originally أَطْوَعَ; or, as AZ says, the verb in this case, with damm to the muḍāriʿ, is likened to أَفْعَلَ, muḍāriʿ يُفْعِلُ.
But Zj says that whoever reads فَمَا ٱسَطَّاعُوا is in error, for the س of اِسْتَفْعَلَ is never movent. And Sb mentions مَا أَسْتَتِيعُ, holding it to be an instance of substitution.
Qur’ān 18:97 approximate — somewhere between 18:80 and 18:110 Lane cites “Kur xviii. 96”
Qur’ān 18:97 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
فَمَا ٱسْطَـٰعُوٓا۟ أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ لَهُۥ نَقْبًاThus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
10.1.1Will your Lord consent, or comply with the desire, that He should send down to us a table with food on it from Heaven?—هَلْ يَسْتَطِيعُ رَبُّكَ أَنْ يُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْنَا مَائِدَةً مِنَ السَّمَآءِ
See also form 4.
Er-Rāghib: some say that this, in the Kur [5:112], means هَلْ يُجِيبُ.
10.1.2will you ask your Lord to consent, or to comply with the desire?—هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ رَبَّكَ
Ks read it in this way.
he demanded his obedience, and his consent, or compliance with what he desired of him—استطاعهُ
