muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarطَمَعٌ

Core sense — he coveted it, he desired it greedily; he hoped for itgenerated

1.1he coveted it; he desired it greedily, or excessively; or he strove to get itبِهِ

maṣdar طَمَعٌ and طَمَاعَةٌ; and, according to all the copies of the K [and my copy of the Msb], طَمَاعٌ, but this is wrong; also طَمَاعِيَةٌ without teshdeed, and طَمَاعِيَّةٌ with teshdeed, as in the L, though some disapprove this last.

Synonym: حَرَصَ عَلَيْهِ.

Er-Rāghib: طَمَعٌ means the longing, or yearning, for a thing, or lusting after it, mostly for the gratification of animal appetite without any lawful reason.

It is mostly used of something whose happening is thought to be near; but sometimes طَمِعَ فِيهِ means he hoped for it.

[See also طَمَعٌ below.]

he eagerly desired, or hoped, to make himself master of, or to overcome, such a oneطَمِعَ فِى فُلَانٍ

he eagerly desired, or hoped, to gain possession of, or to win, such a woman; or he lusted after herطَمِعَ فِى فُلَانَةَ
1.1.1he became very covetousطَمُعَ

Said of a man; صَارَ كَثِيرَ الطَّمَعِ.

[Or rather, how covetous he is! for] it is a verb of wonder. By rule the verbs of wonder have three forms, as in the examples مَآ أَحْسَنَ زَيْدًا, أَسْمِعْ بِهِ and كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً, from which نِعْمَ and بِئْسَ are irregular exceptions.
