muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarطُلُوعٌ
Core sense — the sun rose, or appeared; he ascended the mountain; he came forthgenerated
1.1it rose, or appeared—طَلَعَ
[despite the guttural letter], and مَطْلَعٌ and مَطْلِعٌ. The last two are both used as maṣdars, and also as nouns of place [and of time], but the first of them is preferable, on the ground of analogy, as a maṣdar, and the second as a noun of place or of time.
Said of the sun; and in the same way of the moon, and of a star or asterism.
the Pleiades rose—طَلَعَت
اِطَّلَعَ is used in the same way, and أَطْلَعَ stands for أَطْلَعَتِ الثُّرَيَّا, which has this meaning; so in a verse of El-Kumeyt, where the verb may, consistently with the metre, be a mistranscription for اطَّلَعَت.
أَطْلَعَ is synonymous with طَلَعَ in the saying of Ru-beh: [As though it, or he, were a star in the midst of clouds, that had risen]
shāhidكَأَنَّهُ كَوْكَبُ غَيْمٍ أَطْلَعَا
I will come to you every day in which the sun rises—آتِيكَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ طَلَعَتْهُ الشَّمْسُ
That is, طَلَعَتْ فِيهِ.
the sun has risen; and may it not have risen with the soul of any one of us—طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَلَا تَطْلُعُ بِنَفْسِ أَحَدٍ مِنَّا
Said in a prayer; that is, may none of us have died at its rising. The future is put in the place of the past tense.
1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredit appeared, coming up from the upper part of a thing—طَلَعَ
Said of anything that shows itself from the upper part of a thing, or comes up out of a thing and appears. The Ksh says that الطُّلُوعُ means appearing by rising, or by becoming raised up.
the tooth of the child showed its point—طَلَعَتْ سِنُّ الصَّبِىِّ
the seed-produce began to come up, and showed its sprouting forth—طَلَعَ الزَّرْعُ
.
the seed-produce appeared—أَطْلَعَ الزَّرْعُ
the plants, or herbage, of the land came forth—أَطْلَعَ نَبْتُ الأَرْضِ
the trees put forth their leaves—أَطْلَعَ الشَّجَرُ
the palm-tree, or the palm-trees, put forth the spadix—طَلَعَ النَّخْلُ
maṣdar طُلُوعٌ and أَطْلَعَ, or أَطْلَعَتِ النَّخْلَةُ. What is put forth is the طَلْع [q. v.]. طلّع, maṣdar تَطْلِيعٌ, is used in the same sense. These verbs, in this sense, seem to be derived from the noun طَلْعٌ, though that is plainly from طَلَعَ.
1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredI filled the drinking-vessel for him until it nearly overflowed at the sides—مَلَأْتُ لَهُ القَدَحَ حَتَّى يَكَادَ يَطْلُعُ مِنْ نَوَاحِيهِ
the water in the vessel poured out over its sides—تَطَلَّعَ المَآءُ فِى الإِنَآءِ
1.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredhe ascended the mountain—طَلَعَ الجَبَلَ
. The preposition [عَلَى] is left out. طَلِعَ, with kesr, is used in the same way, and اِطَّلَعَ الجَبَلَ means the same as طَلَعَهُ. See also مُضْطَلِعٌ in art. ضلع.
I ascended the mountain—طَلِعْتُ الجَبَلَ
According to ISk, with kesr; but others say طَلَعْتُ, with fet-h.
I ascended the mountain—طَلَعْتُ فِى الجَبَلِ
Another explanation of this phrase follows below.
1.1.4figurative · مجاز — inferredhe (a man) came to us; and he came upon us suddenly, unawares—طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا
and اِطَّلَعَ.
he became absent from them, or departed from them—طَلَعَ عَنْهُمْ
he came forth upon the people, or party; and also, he looked upon them—طَلَعَ عَلَى القَوْمِ
I came to the people, or party—طَلَعْتُ عَلَى القَوْمِ
I became absent from them, or departed from them—طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ
According to ISk.
أَطْلَعْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ means the same as طَلَعْتُ, and طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ has the same meaning as طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ explained above, according to ISk, عَلَى being put in the place of عن.
I became absent from the people so that they did not see me; and also, I advanced towards them so that they saw me—طَلَعْتُ عَلَى القَوْمِ
according to AZ. The phrase thus has two opposite meanings.
I retired, or went back, into the mountain, so that my companion did not see me—طَلَعْتُ فِى الجَبَلِ
Az says the Arabs used it so. See also the other explanation of this phrase above.
I retired, or went back, from my companion—طَلَعْتُ عَنْ صَاحِبِى
.
I advanced, or came near, towards my companion—طَلَعْتُ عَنْ صَاحِبِى
Here عَنْ is plainly a mistranscription for عَلَى.
In all these phrases طَلَعَ and طَلَعْتُ may be rendered: he, and I, came forth, or went forth. Hence the proverb هٰذِهِ يَمِينٌ قَدْ طَلَعَتْ فِى المَخَارِمِ, explained in art. خرم under مَخْرِمٌ.
1.1.5
For another meaning of طَلَعَ followed by عَلَى, see اِطَّلَعَ, which is more commonly used with that meaning.
1.1.6figurative · مجازhe went, or made his way, to, or towards, his country—طَلَعَ بِلَادَهُ
The verb here is synonymous with قَصَدَ; so طَلَعَ is also used.
these are ripening dates that have gone towards El-Yemen—هٰذَا بُسْرٌ قَدْ طَلَعَ اليَمَنَ
In a tradition; or the reading is هذا بُرٌّ, this is wheat that has gone towards El-Yemen — that is, from Nejd.
1.1.7figurative · مجاز — inferredhe reached, or arrived at, their land—طَلَعَ أَرْضَهُمْ
In these phrases the verb is synonymous with بَلَغَ.
Here the verb اِطَّلَعَ, used in the same sense.
when did you reach, or arrive at, our land?—مَتَى طَلَعْتَ أَرْضَنَا
he reached, or arrived at, this land—اطّلع هٰذِهِ الأَرْضَ
the pain of which shall reach the hearts—ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الأَفْئِدَةِ
In the Kur 104:7; or, which shall rise above the hearts, [or overwhelm them,] and burn them.

Thou wouldst have seen the sun, when it rose, declining to the right from their Cave, and when it set, turning away from them to the left, while they lay in the open space in the midst of the Cave. Such are among the Signs of Allah: He whom Allah, guides is rightly guided; but he whom Allah leaves to stray,- for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the Right Way.

(L, TA. [These verbs, in this sense, are app. derived from the subst. طَلْعٌ ; but this is obviously from طَلَعَ .]) One says also, مَلَأْتُ لَهُ القَدَحَ حَتَّى يَكَادَ يَطْلُعُ مِنْ نَوَاحِيهِ [I filled for him the drinking-vessel until it nearly overflowed from its sides]. [ عَلَى ] being suppressed; (Mgh;) as also طَلِعَ , with kesr; (K;) and اِطَّلَعَ الجَبَلَ signifies the same as طَلَعَهُ : (TA: [see also مُضْطَلِعٌ , in art. ضلع :]) accord. to ISk, one says, طَلِعْتُ الجَبَلَ , with kesr, meaning I ascended upon the mountain; (S, O;) but others say, طَلَعْتُ , with fet-h. (O.) And He ascended the mountain: (TA:) [or] طَلَعْتُ فِى الجَبَلِ means I ascended the mountain. (Msb. [See also another explanation of this latter phrase in what follows.]) And طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا , aor. طَلَعَ and طَلُعَ ; and اِطَّلَعَ ; He (a man) came to us; (K;) and came upon us suddenly, or at unawares: (TA:) and طَلَعَ عَنْهُمْ he became absent, or absented himself, or departed, from them: (K:) or طَلَعَ عَلَى القَوْمِ he came forth upon the people, or party: and he looked upon them: (MA:) accord. to ISk, طَلَعْتُ عَلَى القَوْمِ means I came to the people, or party: and طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ I became absent, or absented myself, or departed, from them: (S, O:) and أَطْلَعْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ signifies the same as طَلَعْتُ : (O:) and طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ has the same meaning [also] as طَلَعْتُ عَنْهُمْ expl. above, accord. to ISk; عَلَى being put in the place of عن : accord. to AZ [likewise], طَلَعْتُ عَلَى القَوْمِ , inf. n. طُلُوعٌ , means I became absent from the people, or party, so that they did not see me: and also I advanced, or approached, towards them, so that they saw me: thus having two contr. meanings: and accord. to Az, the Arabs said, طَلَعْتُ فِى الجَبَلِ , inf. n. طُلُوعٌ , as meaning I retired, or went back, into the mountain, so that my companion did not see me: [see another explanation of this phrase in what precedes:] and طَلَعْتُ عَنْ صَاحِبِى , inf. n. طُلُوعٌ , I retired, or went back, from my companion: and طَلَعْتُ عَنْ صَاحِبِى [in which عَنْ seems to be evidently a mistranscription for عَلَى ] I advanced, or approached, towards my companion. (TA.) [In all of these phrases, طَلَعَ and طَلَعْتُ may be correctly rendered He, and I, came forth, or went forth. And hence,] it is said in a prov., هٰذِهِ يَمِينٌ قَدْ طَلَعَتْ فِى المَخَارِمِ [expl. in art. خرم , voce مَخْرِمٌ ]. (AZ, TA.) For another meaning of طَلَعَ followed by عَلَى , see اِطَّلَعَ [which is more common as having that meaning]. طَلَعَ is also syn. with قَصَدَ : so in the phrase طَلَعَ بِلَادَهُ [He tended, repaired, betook himself, or went, to, or towards, his country]: (K, TA:) and so in the saying, in a trad., هٰذَا بُسْرٌ قَدْ طَلَعَ اليَمَنَ , (so in the O,) or هذا بُرٌّ , (so in the TA,) [These are ripening dates, or this is wheat, that have, or has, gone to, or towards, El-Yemen,] meaning from Nejd. (TA.) And syn. with بَلَغَ ; as also اِطَّلَعَ : (O, K:) so the former in the saying, طَلَعَ أَرْضَهُمْ [He reached, or arrived at, their land]; (K, TA;) and مَتَى طَلَعْتَ أَرْضَنَا [When didst thou reach, or arrive at, our land?]: (O, TA:) and so the latter verb in the saying, اطّلع هٰذِهِ الأَرْضَ [He reached, or arrived at, this land]: (O, K:) and hence, (TA,) ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الأَفْئِدَةِ , in the Kur [civ. 7], means Whereof the pain shall reach the hearts: (Fr, O, TA:) or which shall rise above the hearts, (O, TA,) [or overwhelm them,] and burn them. (TA.)
