muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarطَلَبٌ

1.1he followed in pursuit—طَلَبَ

maṣdar طَلَبٌ, مَطْلَبٌ, طِلَابٌ, طِلَابَةٌ, طَلِبَةٌ, and تَطْلَابٌ [which is of a measure denoting intensiveness]; also اِطَّلَبَهُ and تطلّبهُ [but see this last below].

He sought it, desired it, demanded it, or asked for it; he pursued it; he sought, desired, or tried to find it and to get or take it.

Explained also as meaning اتبع, that is, أَتْبَعَ.

seek for me a thing—اُطْلُبْ لِى شَيْئًا
he sought it, desired it, or demanded it, of him—طَلَبَهُ مِنْهُ

Also said as إِلَيْهِ, with the same maṣdars.

he petitioned me, or made petition to me—طَلَبَ إِلَىَّ

That is, رَغِبَ.

he asked him—طَلَبَ إِلَيْهِ

Or it means سَأَلَهُ, or else طَلَبَهُ رَاغِبًا إِلَيْهِ, he sought him, petitioning him; for it is generally held that طَلَبَ is not transitive by means of a preposition, so a phrase like this is explained as implying something. See also Form 4, in two places, and Form 5.

One also says طَلَبَهُ بِحَقٍّ, meaning طَالَبَهُ.

he sought to obtain his blood-revenge, or retaliation—طَلَبَ بِثَأْرِهِ

Likewise بِذَحْلِهِ; and in the same way طَلَبَ بِدَمِهِ.

Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He draweth the night as a veil o'er the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!

(TA.) One says, اُطْلُبْ لِى شَيْئًا Seek thou, &c., for me, a thing. (Lh, TA.) And طَلَبَهُ مِنْهُ and إِلَيْهِ , inf. n. as above, He sought it, desired it, demanded it, or asked for it, of him. (MA.) And طَلَبَ إِلَىَّ means رَغِبَ [i. e. He petitioned me, or made petition to me, &c.]: (K, TA:) or طَلَبَ إِلَيْهِ means سَأَلَهُ [he asked him]: or [it means] طَلَبَهُ رَاغِبًا إِلَيْهِ [he sought him, petitioning him]; for it is generally held that طَلَبَ is not trans. by means of a prep., therefore they explain the like of this phrase as implicative. (MF, TA.) See also 4, in two places: and see 5. You say also, طَلَبَهُ بِحَقٍّ , meaning طَالَبَهُ , q. v. (K.) Maṣdar مُطَالَبَةٌ and طِلَابٌ.

He sought or demanded of him a thing as being due to him; he sued or prosecuted him for it; the same as طَلَبَهُ بِحَقٍّ, he sought or demanded of him a right, or due.

مُطَالَبَةٌ is used of a real thing, but does not necessarily imply that the act is just.

Zeyd sought of 'Amr, or sued him for, the money—طالب زَيْدٌ عَمْرًا بِالدَّرَاهِمِ
he sought or demanded of him the debt—طالبهُ بِالدَّيْنِ

A man said this to the Prophet.

[He asked of me a thing] and I accomplished for him what he sought—طَلَبَ إِلَىَّ فَأَطْلَبْتُهُ

He performed, or accomplished, for him, (S, A, O, Msb, TA,) that which he sought, or demanded, (S, A, * O, Msb,) or the object of his want: (TA:) or he gave him that which he sought, or demanded. (K.) A man said to the Prophet, اُطْلُبْ إِلَىَّ طَلِبَةً فَإِنِّى أُحِبُّ أَنْ أُطْلِبَكَهَا i. e. [Ask thou of me] an object of want, [for I love] to perform it, or accomplish it, for thee. (TA.) And one says, طَلَبَ إِلَىَّ فَأَطْلَبْتُهُ i. e. [He asked of me a thing] and I performed, or accomplished, for him that which he sought, or demanded. (TA.) And اطلبهُ الشَّىْءَ He aided him, or helped him, to seek the thing. (TA.) And أَطْلِبْنِى Aid thou me to seek. (Lh, TA.) Also He, or it, (said of a man, Msb, and of poverty, A,) necessitated his seeking, or demanding. (S, A, O, Msb, K.) Thus it has two contr. significations. (S, O, K.) And hence, (S, O,) أَطْلَبَ said of water, and of pasture, or herbage, (S, A, O,) &c., (S, O,) It was distant, or remote, (S, A, O,) so as to be not attainable but by seeking, (S, O,) or so that it was sought. It (an action, and the like) was, or became, suitable to him; fit, meet, or proper, for him — as though it were sought, or desirable.

But they have been content to use اِنْبَغَى in place of this verb. Zj, in art. بغى.

يَنْبَغِى, in the Qur'ān 19:93, is explained by يَنْطَلِبُ in the Kashshāf and in the commentary of Bd.

It generally means a thing that one seeks, desires, demands, or asks for; a thing one tries to find and to get or take; an object of quest, or of desire.

طِلْبٌ, طِلْبَةٌ, and طَلَبٌ are nouns from طَالَبَهُ, meaning the same, or a right, or due, that is sought or demanded.

طَلِبَةٌ also means an object of want, or need; a needful thing. Its plural is طَلِبَاتٌ.

I have an object of quest, or a right, that must be sought of him—طِلْبَةٌ لِى عِنْدَهُ

Seeking, desiring, or demanding; trying to find and to get or take; a seeker; and used for طَالِبُ عِلْمٍ, a student of science or knowledge.

Plural طُلَّابٌ, طَلَبَةٌ, طُلَّبٌ, طَالِبُونَ, and أَطْلَابٌ [a plural of paucity, like أَصْحَابٌ].

Also طَلَبٌ, which, as is said in the M, is properly an ism jamʿ; or, as IAth says, it is either a plural of طَالِبٌ or a maṣdar used as such, for أَهْلُ الطَّلَبِ.

O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!
