Nounطَفْلٌ2 senses

Core sense — soft, or tender; fullers' earth used for scouring clothsgenerated

1soft, or tender, fingers, or ends of fingersبَنَانٌ طَفْلٌ

Soft, or tender; applied to anything. The feminine is formed with ة, applied to a girl, or young woman, or to a woman; plurals طِفَالٌ and طُفُولٌ.

This is allowable, though بنان is a [kind of] plural and طفل is a singular, because every plural of this kind that differs from its singular only by the ة affixed to the latter is treated as singular and masculine as well as feminine.

Homeyd says: [And when they (referring to females) removed from over him the clothing, they wiped him with the extremities of soft, or tender, fingers, that adorned a plump fore arm, tattooed]

shāhid

; meaning بِأَطْرَافِ بِنَانٍ طَفْلٍ.

2fullers' earth: a yellow, or rather yellowish, and sometimes white, earth well known in Egypt, with which cloths are scouredبَيْلُونٌ

It is used for scouring cloths, and is sometimes used in the bath instead of soap; Lane's sources say the cloths are dyed with it, but rather they are scoured.

Core sense — a young child; a portion of a thing; a spark of firegenerated

1

A young one, or the young, of anything — of a human being or of a beast; or a new-born child, or young infant; and also the young of any wild animal.

Or it is applied to a child until he can discriminate, after which he is called صَبِىّ; so some say, and so says El-Munāwee. Or, according to Az, on the authority of AHeyth, a child from the time of his birth until he reaches puberty.

Feminine طِفْلَةٌ, plural أَطْفَالٌ; but طِفْلٌ is also used as feminine, dual, and plural, occurring as a plural in the Kur 24:31 and 22:5 and 40:69.

طِفْيَلٌ means the same as طِفْلٌ, used in this sense by a rājiz; but according to some it stands, by poetic licence, for the diminutive طُفَيْلٌ.
