muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُ
Core sense — he began doing such a thing; he attained his desire; he kept to the placegenerated
1.1he took to severing with the sword [the thighs and the necks]—فَطَفِقَ مَسْحًا بِٱلسُّوقِ وَٱلْأَعْنَاقِ
also طَفِقَ, mentioned by Akh, and by Zj as said by some, but pronounced bad by Lth. Maṣdar طَقَقٌ (in some copies of the K, wrongly, طَفْقٌ) of the first verb, and طُفُوقٌ of the second.
He set about, began, or took to, doing such a thing.
Explained in the K as meaning he continued the doing of such a thing without interruption, and by El-Ḥāfidh Ibn-Ḥajar, in the "Fet-ḥ el-Bāree", as meaning he entered upon doing such a thing and went on continually. But it denotes entering upon the doing of a thing whether one goes on continually or not, and so it is not allowable to prefix أَنْ to its khabar. It is followed by a future, or a muḍāriʿ.
The saying in the Qur'ān 38:32 is for طَفِقَ يَمْسَحُ مَسْحًا; some say the meaning is that he took to wiping, or stroking, with his hand [the thighs and the necks].
The verb is used only in an affirmative phrase: they do not say مَا طَفِقَ.
1.1.1such a one attained what he desired—طَفِقَ فُلَانٌ بِمَا أَرَادَ
Aboo-Sa'eed: a phrase of the Arabs of the desert.
1.1.2he kept, or clung, to the place—طَفِقَ المَوْضِعَ
.

And their Lord called unto them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy unto you?"

فَأَكَلَا مِنْهَا فَبَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ وَعَصَىٰٓ ءَادَمُ رَبَّهُۥ فَغَوَىٰIn the result, they both ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to sew together, for their covering, leaves from the Garden: thus did Adam disobey his Lord, and allow himself to be seduced.
