muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarطَعْنٌ
Core sense — he pierced him with a spear; he censured him; he journeyed by nightgenerated
1.1he pierced him, smote him, or wounded him, with the spear—طَعَنَهُ
Muḍāriʿ طَعُنَ and طَعَنَ; Fr allows the latter as muḍāriʿ of the verb in all its senses, because of the faucial letter, and heard it as muḍāriʿ in this phrase, but Ks did not, neither here nor in relation to the grounds of pretension to respect or honour. Maṣdar طَعْنٌ and مَطْعَنٌ; Lth allows طَعَنَانٌ also here as well as in the case of طَعَنَ بِالقَوْلِ.
he goaded the beast with a stick or the like—طَعَنَ الدَّابَّةَ بِعُودٍ أَوْ نَحْوِهِ
He smote him and pierced him, or he smote him and he pierced him; it does not always mean making the weapon enter. Sometimes it means he pierced, stabbed, stuck, or gored, him with a spear and the like; and sometimes, he thrust, goaded, or poked, him.

(S.) طَعَنَانٌ is of a measure of inf. ns. of verbs denoting that in which is prolongation and perseverance; and aptly applies to deviation from the right course. (TA.) وَأَبِى ظَاهِرُ الشَّنَآءَةِ إِلَّا | طَعَنَانًا وَقَوْلَ مَا لَا يُقَالٌ طَعَنَ إِلَى أُمِّهِ is said of a child, meaning He raised his head [or thrust with it] towards the breast of his mother. (TA in art. خدر .) And you say, طَعَنَ فِى المَفَازَةِ , (S, Msb, K,) aor. طَعُنَ and طَعَنَ , (S,) inf. n. طَعْنٌ , (Msb,) He went away in, or into, the desert, (S, Msb, K, TA,) penetrated into it, (TA,) and traversed it. Hence one says of a woman, طَعَنَتْ فِى الحَيْضَةِ , for طعنت فى أَيَّامِ الحَيْضَةِ i. e. She entered upon the days of the menstruation. (Msb.) طَعَنَ فِى العِنَانِ , (K,) aor. طَعُنَ , (S,) said of a horse, means He strained the rein [by thrusting forward his head], and hastened, or was quick, ( تَنَشَّطَ , so in copies of the S, in the K تَبَسَّطَ ,) in going, or pace.
