muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarطَبْعٌ طَبَعٌ

Core sense — he sealed it, he stamped it; he fashioned it; it became rustygenerated

1.1figurative · مجازhe sealed the writing, or letterطَبَعَ الكِتَابَ

he sealed, stamped, imprinted, or impressed; synonym خَتَمَ [and, as now used, he printed a book or the like].

تَبْعٌ and خَتْمٌ both mean making an impression in, or upon, clay and the like. Er-Rāghib: impressing a thing with the engraving of the signet and stamp. See more in the first paragraph of art. ختم.

Er-Rāghib says also that طَبْعٌ means giving a thing some particular figure, as with the طَبْع of the die for stamping coins and the طَبْع of coins themselves; but that it is more general in meaning than خَتْمٌ and more particular than نَقْشٌ, as what follows will show.

According to Aboo-Is-hák the Grammarian, طَبْعٌ and خَتْمٌ both mean covering a thing over and keeping oneself safe from anything entering it.

IAth says in the same way that they held طَبْعٌ to be synonymous with رَيْنٌ [maṣdar of رَانَ].

But Mujáhid says that رَيْنٌ denotes less than طَبْعٌ, and طَبْعٌ less than إِقْفَالٌ [or the “closing with a lock”: he says this with reference to a phrase in the Kur 47:26].

One also says طَبَعَ عَلَى الكِتَابِ in the same sense; synonym خَتَمَ.

he branded, or otherwise marked, the sheep, or goatطَبَعَ

[See طَابَعٌ.]

God set a seal upon his heartطَبَعَ ٱللّٰهُ عَلَى قَلْبِهِ

Said of an unbeliever's heart, so that he should not heed admonition, nor be disposed to what is good; or so that belief should not enter it. Likewise خَتَمَ عَلَيْهِ.

Er-Rāghib: in this, regard is had to the طَبْع and the طَبِيعَة, which is the natural constitution or disposition; for it denotes the marking of the soul with some particular quality or qualities, either by creation or by habit, and more especially by creation.

Qur’ān 47:26 approximate — somewhere between 47:4 and 47:38 Lane cites “Kur xlvii. 26”
Qur’ān 47:16 located by this root inside the range Lane’s citation allows

And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, "What is it he said just then?" Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Also: he began to make, or manufacture, a thing; and he made a thing, as in the instances that follow.

That is, he was adapted, or disposed, by nature to it; synonym جُبِلَ or فُطِرَ.

1.1.2he filled itطبّع

Er-Rāghib: he filled a measure for corn or the like, or a leathern bucket, or a skin, and the like. Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above.

Maṣdar تَطْبِيعٌ.

Er-Rāghib: because the quantity that fills it is a sign that prevents anyone from taking a portion of what is in it without being found out.

1.1.3he struck the back of his neck with his handطَبَعَ قَفَاهُ

Maṣdar as above. Said of the back of the neck of a boy.

If it is with the ends of the fingers, one says قَذَّ قَفَاهُ.

Synonym طَلَعَ.

1.2it was, or became, rusty, or overspread with rustطَبِعَ

Said of a sword.. Or: very rusty, or overspread with much rust.

This rests on an explanation of the muḍāriʿ; but in the CK, in my manuscript copy of the K, and in the O, it is written يُطْبَعُ. [An explanation of طَبَعٌ in the O and K supports the reading يَطْبَعُ, and a further confirmation of it will appear later in this paragraph.]

1.2.1

Said of a thing, or of a garment or piece of cloth: it was, or became, dirty..

تطّبع is used in the same sense of a garment or piece of cloth. See رَانَ in art. رين.

1.2.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe has no keenness or effectiveness in the affairs by which honour is attainedيَطْبَعُ

Said of a man: he was, or became, filthy or foul in character. Also, he was, or became, sluggish, lazy, or indolent.

Said of a man; like يَفْرَحُ. He is like the sword that is overspread with much rust.

1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredhe was made out to be filthy or foul in characterطُبِعَ

Said of a man. On the authority of Sh; and so طَبِعَ, like فَرِحَ — though I think this doubtful. Also: he was disgraced, or dishonoured.

he was made out to be filthy or foul in character, and was blamedطُبِّعَ

Maṣdar تَطْبِيعٌ.

1figurative · مجاز — inferred

Originally a maṣdar: a nature; a natural, native, or innate disposition or temper; an idiosyncrasy. Synonym سَجِيَّةٌ or جِبِلَّةٌ and خَلِيقَةٌ, that to which a man is adapted by creation [as though it were stamped, or impressed, upon him].

Also طَبِيعَةٌ; or this signifies his مِزَاج [i.e. constitution, or temperament, or the whole of his natural constituents], made up of the four humours. [See مِزَاجٌ.]

And طِبَاعٌ; or this last, with the article ال prefixed to it, means what is constituted in us as a result of food and drink and the like (مَا رُكِّبَ فِينَا مِنَ المَطْعَمِ وَالمَشْرَبِ وَغْيَرِ ذٰلِكَ, in which مطعم and مشرب are plainly used as maṣdars, following general analogy).

By غير ذلك is meant such things as straitness and ampleness of circumstances, and niggardliness and liberality, among the natural dispositions that are inseparable from us.

This word is feminine, like طَبِيعَةٌ, as is said in the M; or it is singular and masculine according to Abu-l-Kásim Ez-Zejjájee; and it is also the plural of طَبْعٌ, as Az says. [Those who said it is feminine may have held it to be a plural.]

طَابِعٌ is synonymous with طِبَاعٌ [as a singular]; or, as Lh says, it is synonymous with طَبِيعَةٌ, of which the plural is طَبَائِعُ.

El-Jáhidh: a certain venomous دُوَيْبَّة [or insect].

Or, as a man of Egypt told Az, an insect of the same kind as the قِرْدَان [or ticks], but whose bite causes intense pain; and often the one bitten becomes swollen [apparently in the part bitten], and is relieved by sweet things.

Az says that among the Arabs it is the نِبْر [which is explained as the tick; or an insect resembling the tick, which, when it creeps upon a camel, makes the track along which it creeps swell; or as smaller than the tick, biting, and making the place of its bite swell].

[According to Dmr, as reported by Freytag, the same as قَمْقَامَةٌ, which is explained as a small tick, and as a species of louse that clings tightly to the roots of the hair, apparently meaning a crab-louse.]

What is known by this name now is a thing shaped like a small shrivelled tick, which sticks to a man's body and can hardly, if at all, be got off except by applying mercury.
