Core sense — an unjust, or defective, divisiongenerated
1an unjust, or defective, division—ضُوزَى
In the article ضأز.
ضيزى, in the Qur., 53:22, is read by all without hemz.
It is of the measure فُعْلَى, like طُوبَى and حُبْلَى, but the ض has kesr so that the ى may remain unchanged; for there is no adjective in the language of the measure فِعْلَى, this being a measure of nouns, like الشِّعْرَى and الدِّفْلَى.
According to Aboo-'Alee it is not an adjective but a maṣdar, like ذِكْرَى, as though the meaning were قِسْمَةٌ ذَاتُ جَوْرٍ.
Fr says that some of the Arabs say ضَأْزَى and ضُؤْزَى.
AHát mentions that AZ heard the Arabs say ضِئْزَى with hemz.
Qur’ān 53:22 approximate — somewhere between 53:14 and 53:62 Lane cites “Kur liii. 22”
Qur’ān 53:22 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓBehold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
