Aboo-Is-hák: its primary meaning is narrowness, or straitness, and hardship.

Narrow, or strait; synonymous with ضَيِّقٌ. In the CK, and in one copy of the S, ضِيق, which is also a correct explanation, as shown above, but not what is meant here, as what follows shows.

Applied to anything, masculine and feminine alike, being a maṣdar used as an adjective. [Like the Persian تَنْگ.]

a strait life; strait sustenance, or means of subsistence—عَيْشٌ ضَنْكٌ

Also عَيْشٌ ضَنِيكٌ in this sense; and so مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكًا in the Kur 20:123, where some read ضَنْكَى, like سَكْرَى.

Or this means such as is unlawful: according to Lth, every life that is unlawful is termed ضَنْكٌ, even if it is ample.

Aboo-Is-hák thinks it means [subsistence] in the fire of Hell, but says that most explain the phrase in the Kur as meaning the punishment of the grave; so it means according to Ibn-Mesʿood. According to Katádeh it is Hell; according to Ed-Dahhák, forbidden gain; and some say الضَّرِيعُ [q. v.] and الزَّكُّومُ [q. v.].
