First person ضَنِنْتُ بِهِ [and one may say عَلَيْهِ and عَنْهُ in the place of بِهِ ]. ضَنِنُوا occurs, in a verse of Kaʿb Ibn-Umm-Sáhib, used by poetic licence for ضَنُّوا.

. Also ضَنَّ, first person ضَنَنْتُ, according to Fr; or, according to Th, Fr said: I have heard ضَنَنْتُ though I have not heard أَضِنُّ, but this muḍāriʿ is mentioned by Yaʿḳoob.

[in the CK ضِنَانًا is wrongly put for ضِنًّا ], and ضَنٌّ, and ضَنَانَةٌ with fet-h, and ضِنَّةٌ; or this last is a simple substantive.

[Only he who clings is to be clung to]—إِنَّمَا يُضَنُّ بِالضَّنِينِ
[I kept tenaciously to, or] I did not leave the place of alighting, or abode—ضَنِنْتُ بِالمَنْزِلِ

He was, or became, niggardly, tenacious, or stingy, of it.

A proverb, meaning that you should cling to fraternizing with him who clings to fraternizing with you.

(S, Mgh, Msb. [See also 8.]) You say, ضَنَّ عَلَيْهِ بِكَذَا He was, or became, niggardly, &c., to him, of such a thing. (Mgh.) And إِنَّمَا يُضَنُّ بِالضَّنِينِ [Only he who clings is to be clung to]: a prov., meaning that you should cling to fraternizing [only] with him who clings to fraternizing with you. (Meyd, and Har p. 42.) And ضَنِنْتُ بِالمَنْزِلِ , inf. n. ضِنٌّ and ضَنَانَةٌ , [I kept tenaciously to, or] I did not quit, or relinquish, the place of alighting, or abode. (TA.)

ضِنَّتِى and ضَنِينِى are used in the same way; or the meaning is that he is my particular, or special, friend,

[chosen from among my brethren]—مِنْ بَيْنِ إِخْوَانِى

As though I appropriated him specially to myself, and was tenacious of him because of the place that he held in my estimation: as is said in the S, it is like special appropriation [of the person to oneself].

As ضِنٌّ is originally a maṣdar, it is used as an adjective applied to a plural number.

[God has] specially-distinguished individuals—إِنَّ لِلّٰهِ ضِنًّا مِنْ خَلْقِهِ يُحْيِيهِمْ فِى عَافِيَةٍ وَيُمِيتُهُمْ فِى عَافِيَةٍ

Said in a tradition; ضَنَائِنَ مِنْ خلقه in other relations of it. The meaning is: individuals of his creatures whom He causes to live in a state of freedom from disease, or from disease and trial, and whom He causes to die in the same state.

The singular of ضَنَائِن is ضَنِينَةٌ, of the measure فَعِيلَةٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُرلَةٌ, meaning a thing that one appropriates specially to himself and of which he is tenacious because of the place that it holds in his estimation.

In the Kur [81. 24], as some read it; others read بِظَنِينٍ. This explanation is Zj's; and if عَن or بِ were put in place of عَلَى, it would be correct.

A name of [the compound of perfumes commonly called] الغَالِيَةُ (Ez-Zejjájee); as also المَضْنُونَةُ.

As says that the latter is a sort of perfume, and the A says the same of the former; in the M the former is said to be the oil of ben. It is so called because one is tenacious of it.
