Form 1ضَعُفَ6 senses · 2 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarضُعْفٌ ضَعْفٌ

Core sense — he, or it, was, or became, weak, feeble, or infirm; it exceededgenerated

1.1he, or it, was, or became, weak, feeble, frail, or infirmضَعَفَ

The latter form is on the authority of Yoo, or of Lh. Muḍāriʿ of each ضَعُفَ.

[and apparently ضَعَفٌ, mentioned below, or this is a simple noun] and ضَعَافَةٌ and ضَعَافِيَةٌ: all of these are maṣdars of the former verb; or the first, which is of the dialect of Kureysh, belongs to the former verb, and the second, which is of the dialect of Temeem, to the latter.

ضُعْفٌ and ضَعْفٌ are the contrary of قُوَّةٌ and of صِحَّةٌ, and both may be used alike in every relation; or, according to the people of El-Basrah, both are so used — so says Az; but some say the former is used of the body and the latter of the judgment or opinion.

1.1.1he lacked the strength, or ability, to do, or to bear, the thingضَعُفَ عَنِ الشَّىْءِ

[He was weak so that he was disabled from doing, or from bearing, the thing.]

Synonymous with عَجَزَ عَنْهُ, or with عَجَزَ عَنِ ٱحْتِمَالِهِ.

1.1.2

O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!

Form 3ضاعفهُ1 sense
maṣdarمُضَاعَفَةٌ

Core sense — he doubled it, trebled it, multiplied itgenerated

3.1the punishment shall be doubled to her, made two-foldيُضَاعَفْ لَهَا العَذَابُ ضِعْفَيْنِ

and ضعّفهُ, maṣdar تَضْعِيفٌ, and اضعفهُ, maṣdar إِضْعَافٌ, all signify the same: he doubled it, or made it two-fold; and trebled it; and made it several-fold, or many-fold, that is, multiplied it.

Kh says that التَّضْعِيفُ means adding to a thing so as to make it double, or more, that is, treble or many-fold; and so الإِضْعَافُ and المُضَاعَفَةُ; and ضَعَفَهُ, without teshdeed, means the same as ضاعفهُ.

In the Kur 33:30, where AA read يُضَعَّفْ. According to AO the meaning is that the punishment shall be made three punishments; for, he says, she is to be punished once, and when the punishment is doubled the one becomes three. He adds that the figurative meaning of يُضَاعَفْ (مَجَازُ يُضَاعَفْ [for which مَجازٌ يُضَاعَفُ is wrongly put in the CK]) is two things being added to a thing so that it becomes three. But Az disapproves of this, saying that it belongs only to figurative and common conventional speech, whereas the skilled grammarians state the meaning to be that she shall be punished with twice the like of the punishment of another; and Ibn-'Arafeh explains it as meaning that she shall have two shares of punishment.

and He will multiply it to him many times overفَيُضَاعِفُهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً

In the Kur 2:246; some read فَيُضَاعِفَهُ, that He may multiply it.

I doubled, or multiplied, the recompense to the peopleأَضْعَفْتُ الثَّوَابَ لِلْقَوْمِ

Core sense — weakness, feebleness, of body or of judgmentgenerated

1

A maṣdar of form 1, like ضُعْفٌ; both, when used as simple nouns, mean weakness, feebleness, and the like. Some say that the former is in the judgment or opinion and the latter in the body.

ضَعَفٌ means the same, and applies to the body and also to the judgment or opinion and the intellect.

1.1weakness of construction, in languageضَعْفُ التَّأْلِيفِ

This is such a construction of the parts of a sentence as is contrary to the generally approved rules of syntax; as when a pronoun is introduced before its noun with respect to the actual order of the words and the order of the sense, the pronoun being affixed to the agent in a verbal sentence; for instance ضَرَبَ غُلَامُهُ زَيْدًا, 'his', that is, Zeyd's, 'young man beat Zeyd'.

When the pronoun is affixed to the object, as in خَافَ رَبَّهُ عُمَرُ, 'Omar feared his Lord', such introduction of it is common; and it is allowable in every case when the pronoun is of the kind called ضَمِيرُ الشَّأْنِ, as in إِنَّهُ زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ, or ضَمِيرُ رُبَّ, as in رُبَّهُ رَجُلًا لَقِيتُهُ, or ضَمِيرُ نِعْمَ, as in نِعْمَهُ رَجُلًا زَيْدٌ.

Core sense — the double, or like, of a thing; spaces between written lines; the limbsgenerated

1twice the like of itضِعْفَاهُ

The phrase means the like of the thing, that doubles it.

the likes of itأَضْعَافُهُ

الضِّعْفُ in the proper language of the Arabs means the like; this is the original meaning. Then, by a later conventional usage, it means the like and more, the addition being unlimited.

this is the like of thisهٰذَا ضِعْفُ هٰذَا
these two are twice the like of itهٰذَانِ ضِعْفَاهُ
this is twice the like of it, and thrice the like of itهٰذَا ضِعْفُهُ

This is allowable in the language of the Arabs, and also means thrice the like of it, and more, because ضِعْف is an unlimited addition.

you shall have twice the like of itلَكَ ضِعْفُهُ
the double of itالاِثْنَانِ ضِعْفُ الوَاحِدِ

The singular form is used, though the dual form is better; and it also means thrice the like of it, and more without limit.

[That is, الاثنان is the double of الواحد.] See the article ثنى.

If a man says in his will أَعْطُوهُ ضِعْفَ نَصِيبِ وَلَدِى, twice the like of the share of his child is given to the legatee; and if he says ضِعْفَيْهِ, thrice the like of it: so that if the son's share is a hundred, the legatee is given two hundred in the first case and three hundred in the second; for a will is made to accord with the common conventional language, not with the niceties of the proper language. So says Az.

The plural is أَضْعَافٌ only.

Sgh adds, apparently on the authority of Ibn-'Arafeh, that the meaning is that the punishment of others should be made two-fold, or more, to you, because you are a prophet.

for these shall be the recompense of the likes for what they have doneفَأُولَائِكَ لَهُمْ جَزَآءُ ٱلضِّعْفِ بِمَا عَمِلُوا

In the Kur 34:36; by الضِّعْفِ is meant الأضْعَافِ. It is most properly held to denote ten of the likes of it, because of the saying in the Kur 6:161, 'Whoever does that which is good, for him shall be ten of the likes of it.'

[In that case we would assuredly have made thee to taste] the like [or, as some explain it, the double] of the punishment of others in the present world and [the like or the double thereof] in the world to come: (Jel:) [Sgh adds, app. on the authority of Ibn-'Arafeh,] the meaning is, the punishment of others should be made two-fold, or more, ( يُضَاعَف ,) to thee, because thou art a prophet. (O.) In the saying, فَأُولَائِكَ لَهُمْ جَزَآءُ ٱلضِّعْفِ بِمَا عَمِلُوا , in the Kur [xxxiv. 36], by الضِّعْفِ is meant الأضْعَافِ [i. e. For these shall be the recompense of the likes for what they have done]; and it is most properly held to denote ten of the likes thereof, because of the saying in the Kur [vi. 161], “ Whoso doth that which is good, for him shall be ten of the likes thereof. ” (O.) In the saying, فَآتِهِمْ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا , in the Kur [vii. 36], by ضِعْفًا is meant مُضَاعَفًا [i. e. Therefore do Thou recompense them with a doubled, or a double, punishment]: عَذَابٌ ضِعْفٌ meaning a punishment as though doubled, one part of it upon another. (TA.) أَضْعَافُ الكِتَابِ means The interspaces of the lines, (S, O, K, TA,) or of the margin, (S, O,) or and of the margins, (K, TA,) of the writing, or book: (S, O, K, TA:) so in the saying, وَقَّعَ فُلَانٌ فِى أَضْعَافِ كِتَابِهِ [Such a one made an entry of a note or postil or the like, or entries of notes &c., in the interspaces of the lines, &c., of his writing, or book]: (S, O, TA:) and تَضَاعِيفُ الكِتَابِ signifies the same as أَضْعَافُهُ . (TA.) And أَضْعَافُ الجَسَدِ The limbs, members, or organs, ( أَعْضَآء ,) of the body: (O, K:) or the bones thereof: (AA, K:) or the bones thereof having flesh upon them: (TA:) sing. ضِعْفٌ . (K.) Hence the saying of Ru-beh, 1 [And God is between the heart and the limbs, &c.]. (TA.) And it is said of Yoonus, [the prophet Jonah,] كَانَ فِى أَضْعَافِ الحُوتِ [He was amid the members of the fish]. (TA.) وَٱللّٰهُ بَيْنَ القَلْبِ وَالأَضْعَافِ
