Core sense — large in the udder; a bad sort of pasture, or dry thorny plant; winegenerated
1large in the udder—ضَرِيعَةٌ
large in the udder—ضَرْعَآءُ
Applied to a ewe or she-goat: large in the ضَرْع, the udder; and applied in the same way to a woman.
Or the last of these is applied to a woman as meaning large in the breasts, and in the same way to a ewe or she-goat.
Or, according to the L, the two words just given, in the first sense above, are applied to a ewe or she-goat and to a camel; while this word is applied to a ewe or she-goat, meaning goodly in the ضَرْع.
2
This word, mentioned in Qurʾān 88:6, is the same as شِبْرِقٌ, which is a bad sort of pasture, on which the pasturing cattle do not produce fat or flesh, and which leaves them in a bad condition if they do not leave it and go to other pasture.
Or, according to IAth, the شبرق is a certain plant in El-Ḥijāz with large thorns.
Or the plant called شِبْرِق when it is dried up; شبرق is its name when it is fresh, and the people of El-Ḥijāz call it ضريع when it is dry; it is said to be a plant that the beast will not approach, because of its bad quality.
And what is dry of any tree (Ibn-ʿAbbād); according to some, particularly of the عَرْفَج and خُلَّة; or any dry herbage: see art. بحت.
And, according to Lth, a certain plant in water that has gone bad from long standing or the like, with roots that do not reach the ground.
Or a certain thing in Hell, more bitter than aloes, more stinking than the carcass, and hotter than fire; the food of the inmates of Hell; but this was unknown to the pagan Arabs.
And, as some say, a certain plant, green — so in the L, but red in the Mufradāt — of foul smell, cast up by the sea, light, and hollow.
And, according to Abu-l-Jowzà, the prickles of the palm-tree.
And, according to IAar, the thorny tree called عَوْسَج in its fresh state.
