Or: they breathed laboriously, when fatigued; and one says the same of camels, for ضَبْحٌ means the breathing of horses and of camels when fatigued. Suh: or they caused a sound to be heard from their mouths, different from neighing and from the sound called حَمْحَمَةٌ in their running.

Or it also means the horses neighed, for الضُّبَاحُ is said to be synonymous with الصَّهِيلُ.

Or they ran at a pace less quick than that called تَقْرِيب; this probably applies only to the first of the two maṣdars mentioned above.

Or it is the same as ضَبَعَت, which means they stretched forth their arms in going along, or running.

According to I'Ab, one says ضَبَحَتْ دَابَّةٌ only of a dog or a horse; he seems to mean that the verb is used in this way only of uttering a sound, or a manner of breathing.

Some of the lexicologists say that those who use it of a camel give ضَبْحٌ the meaning of ضَبْعٌ.
