muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarصُنْعٌ صَنْعٌ صَنَعٌ
Core sense — he made the thing; he did him a kind act; he reared him wellgenerated
1.1
He made, wrought, manufactured, or constructed the thing.. The synonym is عَمِلَهُ, that is, he made it skilfully, or well.
Er-Rāghib: الصُّنْعُ means إِجَادَةُ الفِعْلِ, and every صُنْع is a فِعْل, but every فِعْل is not a صُنْع; and it is not said of [irrational] animals [except figuratively; see أَصْنَعُ], nor of inanimate things, as الفِعْلُ is.
1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe forged a word, or a piece of poetry—صَنَعَ
[And he fabricated speech, or a saying, or a sentence, or the like.]
عَلَى فُلَانٍ in the name of such a one. (Mz, 8th نوع.)
1.1.2he worked, or wrought; he practised an art, a craft, or a manufacture—صَنَعَ
[and صُنْعٌ] and صَنِيعٌ, with the object understood.
1.1.3he did him a benefit, favour, or kind act—صَنَعَ إِلَيْهِ مَعْرُوفًا
Muḍāriʿ as above, with ḍamma.
he did him an evil, or a foul, deed—صَنَعَ بِهِ صَنِيعًا قَبِيحًا
Synonym فَعَلَهُ.
he did him a benefit, favour, or kind act—اِصْطَنَعَ عِنْدَهُ صَنِيعَةً
Synonym اِتَّخَذَهَا, or أَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِ.
what did you do together with your father?—مَا صَنَعْتَ وَأَبَاكَ
It means مَعَ أَبِيكَ.
if you are not ashamed, do what you will—إِذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحْىِ فَٱصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ
by the doing of God—صُنْعَ ٱللّٰهِ
A saying of the Prophet. It is said to be an imperative phrase whose meaning is predicative; as though he said, he who is not ashamed does what he will. Other explanations are given in the O and L, but A 'Obeyd holds this to be the right meaning.
In the Qur'ān 27:90. صنع is in the accusative case as a maṣdar; but one may read it in the nominative, with ذٰلِكَ understood before it.
how good is the doing of God with you!—مَا أَحْسَنَ صُنْعَ ٱللّٰهِ عِنْدَكَ
how good is the doing of God at your abode!—صَنِيعَ ٱللّٰهِ
1.1.4figurative · مجازI tended my horse well, supplied him with fodder, and fattened him—صَنَعْتُ فَرَسِى
Maṣdar صَنْعٌ and صَنْعَةٌ.
he reared, or nourished, his girl, or young woman—صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ
the girl, or young woman, was well nourished, so that she became fat—صُنِعَتِ الجَارِيَةُ
Also صُنِّعَت, maṣdar تَصْنِيعٌ.
Or you say اِصْنَعِ الفَرَسَ (so in my manuscript copy of the K), or أَصْنَعَ الفَرَسَ, without teshdeed. [This seems to show that the right reading is صَنَعَ, agreeing with my manuscript copy of the K, which gives the imperative form; though the TA states that IKtt calls أَصْنَعَ الفَرَسَ a dialectal variant of صَنَعَهُ.]
he nourished the girl, or young woman, well, and fattened her—صَنَّعَ الجَارِيَةَ
With teshdeed. (O, K; in my manuscript copy of the K صَنِّعِ الجَارِيَةَ.) Lth says this is because the تصنيع of a girl, or young woman, is brought about by many things and by careful tending; but Az says that others than Lth allow صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ without teshdeed.
[and this I did] that you might be reared and nourished in my sight—وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِى
In the Qur'ān 20:40. Some read وَلِْتُصْنَعْ as an imperative; and some وَلِتَصْنَعَ, meaning and that you might work in my sight (Ksh), so as not to do so against my command.
Of a woman one says likewise صَنَعَتْ نَفْسَهَا: see form 5.
I reared him, and educated, disciplined, or trained, him well—اِصْطَنَعْتُهُ
1.2he was, or became, skilled, or skilful—صَنِعَ
According to IDrst. But IB says that صَنِعَ has not been heard.

5:63
لَوْلَا يَنْهَىٰهُمُ ٱلرَّبَّـٰنِيُّونَ وَٱلْأَحْبَارُ عَن قَوْلِهِمُ ٱلْإِثْمَ وَأَكْلِهِمُ ٱلسُّحْتَ ۚ لَبِئْسَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَصْنَعُونَWhy do not the rabbis and the doctors of Law forbid them from their (habit of) uttering sinful words and eating things forbidden? Evil indeed are their works.
11:16
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا ٱلنَّارُ ۖ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا۟ فِيهَا وَبَـٰطِلٌ مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَThey are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire: vain are the designs they frame therein, and of no effect and the deeds that they do!
11:37
وَٱصْنَعِ ٱلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبْنِى فِى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُم مُّغْرَقُونَ"But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood)."
20:69
وَأَلْقِ مَا فِى يَمِينِكَ تَلْقَفْ مَا صَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا۟ كَيْدُ سَـٰحِرٍ ۖ وَلَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلسَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ أَتَىٰ"Throw that which is in thy right hand: Quickly will it swallow up that which they have faked what they have faked is but a magician's trick: and the magician thrives not, (no matter) where he goes."
24:30
قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَSay to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.

, aor. صَنَعَ , inf. n. صُنْعٌ and صَنْعٌ , He made, wrought, manufactured, fabricated, or constructed, the thing; syn. عَمِلَهُ : (K:) [or he made it, &c., skilfully, or well; for] الصُّنْعُ signifies إِجَادَةُ الفِعْلِ ; and every صُنْع is a فِعْل , but every فِعْل is not a صُنْع ; and it is not predicated of [irrational] animals [unless tropically, (see أَصْنَعُ ,)] nor of inanimate things, like as الفِعْلُ is. (Er-Rághib, TA.) [Hence,] صَنَعَ signifies also [He fabricated speech or a saying or sentence or the like:] he forged a word; and poetry, عَلَى فُلَانٍ in the name of such a one. (Mz, 8th نوع .) And صَنَعَ , inf. n. صَنْعٌ [and صُنْعٌ ] and صَنِيعٌ , [with the objective complement understood,] He worked, or wrought; he practised, or exercised, an art, a craft, or a manufacture. (MA.) And صَنَعَ إِلَيْهِ مَعْرُوفًا , (S, O, K,) aor. as above, (K,) inf. n. صُنْعٌ , with damm, He did to him a benefit, favour, or kind act: and صَنَعَ بِهِ صَنِيعًا قَبِيحًا he did to him an evil, or a foul, deed: syn. فَعَلَهُ : (S, O, K:) and one says also [in the former of these two senses], اِصْطَنَعَ عِنْدَهُ صَنِيعَةً ; (S, Mgh, K;) syn. اِتَّخَذَهَا ; (K;) or أَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِ . (Mgh.) The saying مَا صَنَعْتَ وَأَبَاكَ means مَعَ أَبِيكَ [i. e. What didst thou together with thy father?]. (S.) The saying of the Prophet, إِذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحْىِ فَٱصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ [If thou be not ashamed, do what thou wilt,] is said to be an instance of an imperative phrase of which the meaning is predicative; i. e. it is as though he said, he who is not ashamed does what he will: (O, L, TA: *) and other explanations of it are mentioned in the O and L: (TA:) [but] this is held by A 'Obeyd to be the right meaning. (L.) In the phrase صُنْعَ ٱللّٰهِ , in the Kur [xxvii. 90, which may be rendered By the doing of God], صنع is in the accus. case as an inf. n.: but one may read it in the nom. case, meaning ذٰلِكَ to be understood before it. (Zj, O, TA.) One says also, مَا أَحْسَنَ صُنْعَ ٱللّٰهِ عِنْدَكَ and صَنِيعَ ٱللّٰهِ [How good is the doing of God with thee, or at thine abode!]. (K.) And صَنَعْتُ فَرَسِى , inf. n. صَنْعٌ and صَنْعَةٌ , I tended well my horse; or took good care of him; (S, O, K, TA;) supplied him with fodder, and fattened him: and صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ he reared, or nourished, his girl, or young woman: (TA:) and صُنِعَتِ الجَارِيَةُ the girl, or young woman, was treated [or nourished] well, so that she became fat; as also صُنِّعَت , inf. n. تَصْنِيعٌ : (K, TA:) or you say اِصْنَعِ الفَرَسَ , (so accord. to my MS. copy of the K,) or أَصْنَعَ الفَرَسَ , (so accord. to other copies of the K, and in the O, [in the CK اُصْنِعَ الفَرَسُ ,]) without teshdeed; [which seems to indicate that the right reading is صَنَعَ , agreeably with the reading in my MS. copy of the K which gives the imperative form; though it is stated in the TA that أَصْنَعَ الفَرَسَ is said by IKtt to be a dial. var. of صَنَعَهُ ;] (O, K;) and صَنَّعَ الجَارِيَةَ , with teshdeed, meaning he treated [or nourished] well the girl, or young woman, and fattened her; (O, K; [in my MS. copy of the K صَنِّعِ الجَارِيَةَ ;]) because the تصنيع of the girl, or young woman, is by means of many things, and by careful tending: (O, K:) so says Lth: (O:) but Az says that by other, or others, than Lth, it is allowed to say صَنَعَ جَارِيَتَهُ , without teshdeed: and hence the phrase in the Kur [xx. 40.], وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِى , (TA,) meaning [And this I did] that thou mightest be reared and nourished in my sight; (O, TA;) for which some read وَلِْتُصْنَعْ , as an imperative; and some, وَلِتَصْنَعَ , meaning and that thou mightest work in my sight, (Ksh, Bd,) lest thou shouldst do so contrary to my command. (Bd.) You say likewise, of a woman, صَنَعَتْ نَفْسَهَا : see 5. And you say also اِصْطَنَعْتُهُ , meaning I reared him; and educated, disciplined, or trained, him well. (S, * O, K, TA.) Accord. to IDrst, صَنِعَ , inf. n. صَنَعٌ , signifies He was, or became, skilled, or skilful: but IB says that صَنِعَ has not been heard. (TA.)
