Core sense — he roasted, or broiled, it; he threw it into the fire; he was burnedgenerated

1.1he roasted, broiled, or fried it; also, he burned itصَلَاهُ فِى النَّارِ

he roasted, broiled, or fried it, namely flesh-meat and the like; and also, he burned it.

he roasted, broiled, or fried it; also, he burned itعَلَى النَّارِ
he threw it into the fire to be burnedصَلَاهُ فِى النَّارِ
he threw it, namely flesh-meat, into the fire to be burnedاصلاهُ
he threw it, namely flesh-meat, into the fire to be burnedصلّاهُ
he made him enter the fire and remain in itصَلَاهُ النَّارَ

Maṣdar

he made him enter the fire and remain in itفِى النَّارِ

he made him enter the fire and remain in itعَلَى النَّارِ
such a one was made to enter the fireصُلِّىَ فُلَانٌ النَّارَ
I made the man enter fire and be burned
I threw him, or cast him, into the fire, as though meaning to burn himأَصْلَيْتُهُ

Used with ا in this last sense; also صَلَّيْتُهُ, maṣdar تَصْلِيَةٌ.

I worked at a case, wanting to slander such a one in it and bring him to ruinصَلَيْتُ فُلَانًا

Also read

I slandered him, and so caused him to fall into destruction
I slandered him, and so caused him to fall into destruction
he soothed, coaxed, or cajoled such a one; or he deceived or outwitted himصَلَى فُلَانًا

. These meanings are not in any of the three lexicons mentioned above.

I framed a stratagem, or plot, to make such a one fall

[Probably a mistranscription for لِفُلَانٍ.] Said there to be figurative.

1.1.2

صَلَى يَدَهُ بِالنَّارِ [said to be a mistake]: see form 2.

1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe was, or became, burned by the fireصَلِىَ النَّارَ

maṣdar صَلًى or صُلِىٌّ, or both [صَلْيًا being a mistranscription for صُلِيًّا]; also صِلِىٌّ and صِلَآءٌ, and صَلَآءٌ, but this last is a mistake for صَلًى.

he was, or became, burned by the fireبِالنَّارِ
he endured, or suffered, the heat of the fireتصلّى النَّارَ
he endured the heat of the fire, or he felt the heat of the fireتصلّى حَرَّ النَّارِ
he endured the heat of the fire, or he felt the heat of the fireاصطلاهُ
he entered into the fireصَلِىَ النَّارَ

Or he endured, or suffered, the heat of the fire; or he felt the heat of the fire.

For an example see بَلْهَ, in the article بله.

he was tried by fireصَلِىَ بِالنَّارِ

Er-Rāghib: he was tried, بُلِىَ, by fire; and so بِكَذَا [by such a thing, as though by fire].

[In the Qur'ān, where there are many examples of it (4:11, 14:34, 17:19, and so on), it is always transitive by itself, without بِ.]

he endured the heat and severity of the affair, and of the fightingصَلِىَ بِالأَمْرِ

Aboo-Zubeyd says: [And I have suffered the heat and violence of their war, as one affected with cold suffers from the coldest and most abundant hoar-frost]

shāhid

1.3the man kept to, or clung to, a thing

The same as لَزِمَ; and so اصطلى. Zj holds صَلَاةٌ [explained in the article صلو] to be derived from this, because it is a keeping, or clinging, to what God has appointed.

Hence also, it is said, مَنْ يُصَلَّى فِى النَّارِ, that is, يلزم [apparently يُلْزَمُ, meaning مَنْ يُلْزَمُ النَّارَ, he who is made to keep, or cling, to the fire; nearly agreeing with صَلَّاهُ النَّارَ as explained above].

1.4I struck, or beat, that part of the back called صَلًا; or I hit that partصَلَيْتُ الظَّهْرَ

But this is irregular; by rule it should be صَلَوْتُهُ, as Hudheyl say. [See form 1 in the article صلو.]

He warmed himself (M, K) بِالنَّارِ [by means of the fire]: (M:) one says, اِصْطَلَيْتُ بِالنَّارِ and تَصَلَّيْتُ بِهَا [app. meaning I warmed myself by means of the fire]: (S:) or اصطلى النَّارَ and بِالنَّارِ mean he became warm by means of the fire: and تصلّى بِالنَّارِ , he became burnt by the fire. (MA.) Hence, in the Kur [xxvii. 7 and xxviii. [May-be ye will warm yourselves]: (TA:) in relation to which it is said that the time was winter, and therefore الاِصْطِلَآء was needed. (M, TA.) It is also said of the chameleon, as meaning He repaired to the sun. (M and L in art. شقذ : see an ex. in a verse cited voce شَقَذَانٌ .) And one says of a courageous man, with whom one cannot cope, One cannot warm himself by means of his fire; meaning one cannot approach him when he is inflamed with rage, especially in fight, or battle]. (S.) The phrase may be also used satirically, as meaning One will not seek his hospitality. (Meyd. [See Freytag's Arab. Prov. ii. 588.]) See also 1, latter half, in two places.
