muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarصَفْحٌ صُفُوحٌ إِصْفَاحٌ

Core sense — he turned away from him; he forgave him; he struck with the sword's flatgenerated

1.1I turned away from him and left him—ضَرَبْتُ عَنْهُ صَفْحًا

. Properly: he turned towards [or from] him, or it, the صَفْحَة [i.e. side] of his face; the meaning is that he turned away from, and left, him, or it — a man, or an affair.

Said of a man. Here صَفْحًا is a maṣdar, and so in the accusative, as in the phrase قَعَدْتُ جُلُوسًا; or it is in the accusative as an adverbial noun, the meaning being: I turned away from him aside.

كلبا is put in the accusative as an explicative; or the poet inverts the order, meaning صَفْحَ كَلْبٍ ذِرَاعَيْهِ.

Also given as صَفَحَهُ بِالسَّيْفِ, and as اصفحهُ or اصفحهُ بالسيف.

The word used is بِعُرْضِهِ, or بِعَرْضِهِ, [i.e. with its صَفْح or صُفْح or صَفْحَة].

15:85
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ

We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, but for just ends. And the Hour is surely coming (when this will be manifest). So overlook (any human faults) with gracious forgiveness.

24:22
وَلَا يَأْتَلِ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْفَضْلِ مِنكُمْ وَٱلسَّعَةِ أَن يُؤْتُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينَ وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَلْيَعْفُوا۟ وَلْيَصْفَحُوٓا۟ ۗ أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah's cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

43:89
فَٱصْفَحْ عَنْهُمْ وَقُلْ سَلَـٰمٌ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

But turn away from them, and say "Peace!" But soon shall they know!

64:14
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدِكُمْ عَدُوًّا لَّكُمْ فَٱحْذَرُوهُمْ ۚ وَإِن تَعْفُوا۟ وَتَصْفَحُوا۟ وَتَغْفِرُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

O ye who believe! Truly, among your wives and your children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of them! But if ye forgive and overlook, and cover up (their faults), verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

He made a thing wide, or broad.; also صَفَحَ [and اصفح]: see مُصْفَحٌ.

2.2he clapped with his hands—صَفَّح بِيَدَيْهِ

تَصْفِيحٌ is also synonymous with تَصْفِيقٌ, meaning clapping with the hands.

He struck one of his hands upon the other; or he struck with the outer side of the right hand upon the inner side of the left hand.

he clapped with his hands—صَفَّقَ

[Golius gives صَفَحَ in this sense, wrongly, as from the S; and Freytag gives this form as well as صفّح.]

the saying is for men, and the clapping with the hands is for women—التَّسْبِيحُ لِلرِّجَالِ وَالتَّصْفِيحُ لِلنِّسَآءِ

Said in a tradition. Some relate it as التَّصْفِيقُ instead of التصفيح. The saying meant is سُبْحَانَ ٱللّٰهِ: that is, when the Imām is inadvertent, the person he leads should, if a man, rouse him by saying سبحان اللّٰه, and if a woman, should clap her hands instead of speaking.

I applied my hand to his hand; I put my palm upon his palm—صَافَحْتُهُ

Maṣdar as above [and صِفَاحٌ].

The word for side here is صَفْح.

He examined its صَفَحَات [i.e. sides] — that is, a thing's; or he considered it carefully and examined its صَفَحَات.

صَفَحَات here means pages. Also صَفَحْتُهُ.

I examined the leaves of the volume one by one—صَفَحْتُ وَرَقَ المُصْحَفِ

مُصْحَف means a volume, or a book, or a copy of the Qur'ān.

Or: he examined the states, or conditions, of the people and looked among them to see whether such a one was there; or he made the people pass before him and examined them one by one; or he looked at the صَفَحَات [i.e. sides] of their faces.

Said also of a sword: in art. عرض the عُرْض of a sword is said to be its صَفْح. Or it is the عَرْض [i.e. the breadth, or width] of a sword, the opposite of طُول; but it may well be rendered its side, or its flat, and so صَفْحَةٌ, since SM says that صَفْحَتَا السَّيْفِ means the two faces, or surfaces, of the sword.
