muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarصَفٌّ صَفُّ

Core sense — he set men, or things, in a rank, row, or linegenerated

1.1he set a company of men, or a thing, in a rank, row, or lineصفّف

The base verb has and: he set, or stationed, a company of men in war and the like, and a military force, and also a thing, in a rank, row, or line.

Maṣdar تَصْفِيفٌ; this form has an intensive meaning.

1.1.1she sets her fore legs evenly, side by side, on the occasion of being milkedتَصُفُّ يَدَيْهَا عِنْدَ الحَلَبِ

Said of a she-camel: she does not put one leg in advance of the other, as if about to go onward.

See also صَفَنَ, said of a man, and see صَانَ in art. صون.

the camels set their legs in an even rowصَفَّتِ الإِبِلُ قَوَائِمَهَا
1.1.2she yields a row of bowls of her milk when she is milkedتَصُفُّ أَقْدَاحًا مِنْ لَبَنِهَا إِذَا حُلِبَتْ
she combines two milking-vessels, or three, at one milkingتَصُفُّ بَيْنَ مِحْلَبَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ

Said of a she-camel, because of the abundance of her milk.

Or simply تَصُفُّ.

الصَّفُّ means her being milked into two milking-vessels, or three, so as to combine them.

In the CK, أَنْ تَحْلُبَ is a mistake for أَنْ تُحْلَبَ.

he milked her into two bowls, or three, at one milkingصَفَّهَا

A rájiz cited by AZ says, of a she-camel: [She is milked into three milking-vessels at one milking]

shāhid
تَصُفُّ فِى ثَلَاثَةِ المَحَالِبِ

That is, حَلَبَهَا صَفًّا; or perhaps into two bowls only, the pronoun referring to a she-camel. One or the other of these two meanings seems to be indicated by what precedes it there.

1.1.3it was laid, cut into a strip or into strips, upon the live coals to broilصُفَّ عَلَى الجَمْرِ لِيَنْشَوِىَ
it was laid in the same way in the sun to dryفِى الشَّمْسِ لِيَجِفَّ

he cut the flesh-meat into broad slicesصَفَّهُ عَلَى النَّارِ لِيَنْشَوِىَ

Said of flesh-meat.

Also صَفَّ اللَّحْمَ.

ISh: التَّصْفِيفُ is like التَّشْرِيحُ, the cutting of a piece of flesh-meat thin, so that it is translucent; or التصفيف is a kind of تَشْرِيح, the cutting of a piece thin, so that it is translucent because of its thinness, and then throwing it upon the live coals. See صَفِيفٌ.

1.2

See also form 8, in three places.

1.2.1it extended its wings in a line, or expanded its wings, in the sky, and did not move themصَفَّ

Said of a bird.

And it did not strike its sides with them as the pigeon does; the reading "and struck" is an evident mistake.

Birds that do this are not to be eaten, such as the vulture and the hawk.

It is said in a tradition, يُؤْكَلُ مَا دَفَّ وَلَا يُؤْكَلُ مَا صَفَّ. See art. دف.

1.3figurative · مجازI put a covering to the horse's saddleصَفَفْتُ لِلسَّرْجِ

Also صَفَفْتُ لِلسَّرْجِ صُفَّةً and صَفَفْتُ السَّرْجَ, and أَصْفَفْتُهُ, though this last verb is of weak authority. The thing put on is the صُفَّة.

he made a covering for the beastصَفَّ الدَّابَّةَ

Also صَفَّ لَهَا; the thing made is a صُفَّة.

Nounصُفَّةٌ4 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a portico, or vestibule, with a long roof; a horse's saddle-cover; a long period of timegenerated

1

An appertenance of a house, or of a building, like a wide بَهُو, here used in a postclassical sense as meaning a kind of vestibule, or portico, for shade and shelter, open in front, with a long roof or ceiling; the طُرَّة of a building. None of the authorities cited explains it.

The same as سَقِيفَةٌ and the same as ظُلَّةٌ, that is, a roof, or covering, for shade and shelter, over the door of a house, or extending from a house to another house opposite it, like سُدَّةٌ and سَقِيفَةٌ.

For the meaning assigned to it by Golius as from the S, and by Freytag as from the K and S, "scamnum discubitorium, fere ex lapidibus structum", I find no authority in any Arabic work. In Egypt it is applied to a shelf of marble or of common stone, about four feet high, supported by two or more arches, or by a single arch, figured and described in the Introduction to my work on the Modern Egyptians; this is apparently so called because it resembles a porch in form, though not in size.

The plural is صُفَفٌ and صِفَافٌ and صُفَّاتٌ.

أَهْلُ الصُّفَّةِ, the people of the صُفَّة, was a name applied to certain persons who were the guests of El-Islám, that is, supported by the charity of the Muslims: poor refugees and houseless men who passed the night in the صُفَّة of the Prophet's mosque in El-Medeeneh, a covered place belonging to the mosque, roofed over with palm-sticks. There they resorted for lodging; sometimes they were few, and sometimes many. SM says: I have drawn up a list of their names, in a tract, to the number of ninety-two, or ninety-three.

ISd says that عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الصُّفَّةِ, the punishment of the day of the صُفَّة, is the same as عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ, mentioned in the Kur 26:189. Lth says that the former was a day on which a certain people disobeyed their apostle, so God sent upon them heat and clouds which overspread them, and they perished. Az says that it is not the same as the day mentioned in the Kur, and that he did not know what is meant by عذاب يوم الصفّة. It seems, however, that both mean the same, since الصُّفَّةُ and الظُّلَّةُ are one in meaning.

Qur’ān 26:189 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur xxvi. 189”
1.1figurative · مجاز

Also an appertenance of the سَرْج, the horse's saddle, like the مِيثَرَة of the رَحْل, the camel's saddle: the thing with which it is covered, between the قَرَبُوسَانِ, which are its fore part and its hinder part.

Or, as also of the رَحْل, the thing that comprises within it the two pieces of wood called the عَرْقُوَتَانِ and the two pads, or stuffed things, called the بِدَادَانِ, above them and beneath them.

Plural صُفَفٌ and صِفَافٌ, the latter mentioned by Sb.

Core sense — setting the legs in an even row; standing in a rank; expanding the wings without moving themgenerated

1setting their legs in an even rowصَافَّةٌ

Originally صَافِفٌ, ism fāʿil of صَفَّ.

This and its plural صَوَافُّ are adjectives applied to camels, from صَفَّتْ قَوَائِمَهَا.

صَوَافَّ means مَصْفُوفَةً, that is, set in a row, to be slaughtered, of the measure فَوَاعِل in the sense of the measure مَفَاعِل — so in the O, and also, probably copied from it, in the copies of the K, but correctly مَفَاعِيل; or it means مُصْطَفَّةً, standing in a row; or, as related by I 'Ab, it is صَوَافِنَ.

In the phrase وَٱلصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا in the Kur 37:1, by الصَّافَّات are meant the angels standing in ranks in Heaven, glorifying God.

Qur’ān 22:36 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur xxii. 37”
Qur’ān 22:36 Lane quotes this verse

The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
