In the Qur'ān [31:17], وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ, and according to one reading لَا تُصَاعِرْ, meaning: and do not turn away from people out of pride. (Fr, Aboo-Is-hák) [See also Form 5.]

"And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster.

He caused him to have a wryness, or distortion, in the neck, and a turning of the face on one side, by something smiting or befalling him. (Msb.) صعّر خَدَّهُ , (inf. n. تَصْعِيرٌ , K,) and صاعرهُ , (S, A, Msb, K,) and اصعرهُ , (K,) He turned away his cheek (S, A, Msb) from the people, (Msb,) by reason of pride (S, A, Msb) and dislike; (S, Msb;) he turned away his cheek from looking towards the people, by reason of contempt arising from pride. (K.) It is said in the Kur [xxxi. 17], وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ , (Mgh, TA,) and accord. to one reading, لَا تُصَاعِرْ , (TA,) meaning, And turn thou not away from people through pride. Also [gum of the kind called] لَثًى that has hardened; or that is rather the meaning of صَعَارِيرُ, which is the plural [of صعرور], according to AA; or the plural means hardened gum resembling fingers.

صعرور is said to mean a piece of gum. According to Aboo-Nasr it is like a reed-pen, and twists like a horn.

AHn says that صُعْرُورَةٌ with ة means a small round piece of gum; and also the fruit, or any fruit, of a tree that is like the أَبْهَل and like pepper, and what resembles this among the hard kinds; or such they call صَعَارِيرُ; or gum in general.

Plural صَعَارِيرُ.

Obliquity in going, marching, or course; from صَعَرٌ [the maṣdar of صَعِرَ].

Also a mark made with a hot iron on the neck of a camel; or of a she-camel only: a mark of the people of El-Yemen, made only on she-camels. (Tedhkireh of Aboo-'Alee) It is not made on a camel whether male or female, as A'Obeyd [and J] say it is.

J was led into error by a verse of El-Museiyab Ibn 'Alas, where he uses the phrase بِنَاجٍ عَلَيْهِ الصَّيْعَرِيَّةُ [with a swift he-camel marked with the صيعريّة]; on hearing which Tarafeh Ibn-El-'Abd said, قَدِ ٱسْتَنْوَقَ الجَمَلُ [The male camel has assumed the characteristic of the female camel].

El-Bedr El-Karáfee argues that the term بَعِير used by J includes the female, and that the masculine adjective [نَاجٍ] is used by the poet because the male is the more honourable, being hardier and stronger than the female; but this needs consideration.

Ibr D thought this a mistake for زَاهٍ بِنَفْسِهِ, but that seems to me unlikely.
