Nounصَرْعٌ7 senses · 2 main

Core sense — a throwing down; epilepsy; a sort, a state or conditiongenerated

1

A maṣdar of form 1.

1.1

Also, as a noun: epilepsy, or falling sickness; and sometimes, it seems, ecstatic catalepsy, a sort of trance into which a person falls. A well-known disease resembling madness or possession by a devil, which, according to the Ra-ees [Ibn-Seenà, whom we call "Avicenna"], prevents the vital organs from performing their actions, though not completely. Its cause is an obstruction occurring in one or more of the chambers of the brain and in the ducts of the أَعْصَاب [here meaning nerves] by which the limbs are moved, arising from an abundant thick or sticky خِلْط [or humour], so that the رُوح [here, as often elsewhere, the vital spirit, or nervous fluid] is kept from spreading through them in the natural way, and the limbs consequently become contracted in spasms.

2ذُو لَوْنَيْنِ [i.e. he, or it, has two sorts; or two distinctive qualities or properties]هُوَ ذُو صَرْعَيْنِ

Also a sort, or species; and a state, condition, or manner of being, of a thing: synonymous with ضَرْبٌ and فَنٌّ. So too صِرْعٌ, and also ضَرْعٌ and ضِرْعٌ. [See also صَرْعَةٌ.] Plural of many صُرُوعٌ, and of few أَصْرُعٌ.

Or, as Aboo-'Alee relates it, رَائِحَةٌ [as a partial substitute for صَرْعَانِ], meaning an evening, when there is a binding of the fore shank to the arm, and a morning, when there is a shackling of the legs; for they bind the camel's fore shank to his arm in the evening when he is lying down, and they shackle his legs in the morning so that he may pasture but not stray. Core sense — either leaf of a folding door; a hemistichgenerated

1

Either half, that is, leaf, of a folding door; either one of what are called the مِصْرَاعَانِ of a door or doorway. مِصْرَاعَا بَابٍ means two doors set up meeting together, with the place of entrance between them. In the same way, مِصْرَاعَا سِتْرٍ means the two separate halves of a curtain, hanging side by side so as to meet together, like the two leaves of a folding door. The مِصْرَاع of a door or curtain is also called its مِصْرَع. The plural of مِصْرَاعٌ is مَصَارِيعُ.

1.1

Hence the مِصْرَاع in poetry: a hemistich. This is the general meaning; in a more restricted sense, مِصْرَاعَانِ in poetry means a single verse, that is, a pair of hemistichs, having two rhymes.

Using it in the latter sense, that is, as meaning a verse whose former hemistich rhymes with the latter, which is apparently the primary meaning, Aboo-Is-hák says: the مِصْرَاعَانِ are the two doors of the ode, like the مصراعان of the house, chamber, or tent. And he says that the word is derived from الصَّرْعَانِ, meaning "the two extremities of the day."

Show Lane's original text
