Said of the جُنْدَب [which is apparently a species of locust], of a writing-reed, of a door, or of a dog-tooth ( ناب so in one copy of the S, where other copies, and the A and TA, have باب ): it made a sound, or a prolonged sound; [meaning it creaked, or made a creaking, grating sound;] and so of anything that makes a similar prolonged sound.

But when the sound is light or slight and repeated, the reduplicated form is used. Said of the bird called أَخْطَب, and of the hawk or falcon, or of another bird or flying thing.
As though they imitated prolongation in the cry of the جُنْدَب [and the like], and reiteration in the cry of the أَخْطَب [and the like].
صَرَّ الجُنْدَبُ is a proverb, explained in the article جدب.
