muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarصَبْرٌ
Core sense — he confined him, he restrained him; he was patient, enduringgenerated
1.1figurative · مجازI restrained, or withheld, myself, or my soul—صَبَرْتُ نَفْسِى
aor. صَبِرَ: he confined him, held him in custody, detained, retained, restrained, or withheld him, or it; عَنْهُ from it.
[According to a copy of the A, صبّرهُ signifies the same; but this may be a mistranscription.]
That is, عَلَى كَذَا [to endure such a thing].
'Antarah says, mentioning a battle in which he was engaged:
shāhidفَصَبَرْتُ عَارِفَةً لِذٰلِكَ حُرَّةًتَرْسُوا إِذَا نَفْسُ الجَبَانِ تَطَلَّعُ
meaning حَبَسْتُ نَفْسًا صَابِرَةً [i.e. And I restrained there a soul patient and ingenuous, that is firm when the soul of the coward yearns: I have rendered the last word on the supposition that the poet describes the soul of the coward as one yearning for home].
صَبَرَ is also used intransitively [or as a transitive verb whose object, namely نَفْسَهُ, is understood].
he was, or became, patient, or enduring—صَبَرَ
The contrary of جَزِعَ. Or: he restrained himself from impatience; or he restrained himself from impatience, his tongue from complaint, and his members from broil.
he was patient, he endured—اِصْطَبَرَ
he was patient, he endured—اِصَّبَرَ
Or, according to Dhu-n-Noon, he shunned acts of opposition, was calm in suffering the pangs of afflictions, and made a show of competence in a state of protracted poverty in places where the means of subsistence were found.
Or, as some say, he endured trial, or affliction, with good manners; or he was contented in trial without show of complaint; or he constrained himself to attempt things that he disliked.
Or, according to 'Amr Ibn-'Othmán, he maintained constancy with God and received His trials with an unstraitened mind.
Or, according to El-Khowwás, he steadily adhered to the statutes of the Kur-án and the Sunneh.
Or, as some say, he was content to perish for gaining the approval of him whom he loved.
Or, according to El-Hareeree, he made no difference between a state of ease, comfort and affluence and a state of affliction, preserving calmness of mind in both states.
In the CK, erroneously, اصْبَرَّ. The ط is changed into ص, but not اِطَّبَرَ, for ص is not to be incorporated into ط; and likewise تصبّر, both synonymous with صَبَرَ.
he constrained himself to be patient—تصبّر
[Or he took patience; and اصطبر: he acquired patience, and he was tried with patience: see صَابِرٌ.]
such a one was patient on the occasion of affliction—صَبَرَ فُلَانٌ عِنْدَ المُصِيبَةِ
I was patient of, or I bore with, what I dislike—صَبَرْتُ عَلَى مَا أَكْرَهُ
I endured with patience being debarred from what I like—صَبَرْتُ عَمَّا أُحِبُّ
I constrained myself to be patient of the loss of it, or him—تَصَبَّرْتُ عَنْهُ
Stated under تَجَلَّدَ.
the most excellent kind of patience is the constraining of oneself to be patient—أَفْضَلُ الصَّبْرِ التَّصَبُّرُ
my body will not endure cold patiently—بَدَنِى لَا يَصْبِرُ عَلَى البَرْدِ
boldness, or daring, [in enduring, or attempting, a thing]—صَبْرٌ
A saying of 'Omar.
1.1.1he confined him alive and shot, or cast, at him until he died—صَبَرَهُ عَلَى القَتْلِ
he confined him (a man) to die, until he died—قَتَلَهُ صَبْرًا
he confined him (a man) to die, until he died—صَبَرَهُ
he confined him to die, until he died—اصبرهُ
Also: he made him, or it, firm or fast; or bound, or tied, him, or it, firmly, or fast.
The maṣdar is as above. Said of a man and of other than man, [with bonds or otherwise]; or he set him up for slaughter.
This last also signifies: he slew him in retaliation. Mentioned under بوأ.
he (any living thing) was confined alive and then shot at until he was put to death—قُتِلَ صَبْرًا
he was confined, or held and confined, to be put to death—صُبِرَ
Or he (any living thing) was bound until he was put to death; or he (a man) was bound hand and foot, or held by another man, until he was beheaded; or he was slain deliberately, not on the field of battle, nor in war or fight, nor by mistake. So Aboo-'Obeyd.
صَبْرُ الرُّوحِ [signifies the confining of a living thing and shooting, or casting, at it until it dies; but it] occurs in a tradition in which it is forbidden, as meaning the act of gelding, or castrating.
1.1.2he confined him to make him swear, until he took an oath—اصبرهُ
he made him swear a most energetic oath—صَبَرَ يَمِينَهُ
Also, with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above: he confined him to make him swear, until he swore.
This is a figurative phrase.
And اصبرهُ, mentioned under بلت.
he (the judge, or governor) constrained him to swear, or take an oath—اصبرهُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ
he was confined, or held in custody, so that he might be made to swear—صُبِرَ
he swore, being held in custody by the judge in order that he might be made to do so—حَلَفَ صَبْرًا
he swore, or took an oath—صَبَرَ يَمِينًا
Mentioned under بلت; and it also means: he compelled someone to take an oath.
1.1.4
Also: he clung to him, said of a man; synonym لَزِمَهُ.
1.2
For صَبَرَمِنْهُ, see form 8.
1.3I became responsible, or surety, for him, or it—صَبَرْتُ
I became responsible, or surety, for him, or it—صَبَرْتُ بِهِ
Thus in my copies, without any complement.
aor. صَبُرَ, maṣdar صَبْرٌ and صَبَارَةٌ.
1.3.1give me a surety—اُصْبُرْنِى
1.4they collected their wheat together without measuring or weighing it—صَبَرُوا طَعَامَهُمْ
So in the CK, [agreeing with an explanation of the ism mafʿūl مَصْبُورٌ].
they collected their wheat together without measuring or weighing it—صَبَّرُوهُ
So in the M, and in my manuscript copy of the K, [both probably correct]. They made it a صُبْرَة [q. v.].
