Core sense — it became spread, or divulged; it became scattered; he, or it, followed himgenerated

1.1it became spread, made known, or disclosed [among the people]—فِى النَّاسِ

maṣdar شُيُوعٌ, شَيْعُوعَةٌ, شَيْعٌ, شَيَعَانٌ, and مَشَاعٌ, the last of which appears as مَشَاعَة in the CK.

So as to reach everyone, becoming equally known by the people, not known by some to the exclusion of others.

Said of information, an announcement, news, a story, or a thing: it became spread, published, divulged, revealed, or made known; or it became apparent.

Like the saying عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ [Safety, or peace, &c., be, or light and abide, on you], but said only by a man to his companions when he wants to leave them.

Or it means: may safety not leave you. Hence one also says شَاعَكَ الخَيْرُ, may prosperity not leave you; and Lebeed says the like of praise.

J says that شاعهُ, means he, or it, followed him.

Yoo: or شاعكم السلام, means [may safety, &c.,] fill you.

2.2he blew in the reed-pipe—شيّع

Said of a pastor. The pipe is شِيَاع, with which the camels are called together.

2.2.1he called to the camels, and they followed one another—شيّع بِالإِبِلِ

Said of a pastor.

In some copies of the K this is given as the same as اشاء بها [in the CK اَشابَها], but correctly أَشَاعَ بِهَا, which means he called to the camels when some of them remained, or lagged, behind.

he shouted and called to his camels, when some of them lagged behind—شايع بِإِبِلِهِ

Said of a pastor; maṣdar مُشَايَعَةٌ and شِيَاعٌ.

he called out among his camels, and they went along following one another—شيّع إِبِلَهُ
he urged on the sheep, or goats, that lagged behind, so that they might follow the others—شيّع الغَنَمَ

These last two phrases seem to come from the second of the explanations that follow.

Or rather بِسِتَّةٍ.

Explained by أَتْبَعْتُهُ بِهَا, a well-known phrase of frequent occurrence, which I have not found in any of the lexicons except in explanations; the approved phrase used instead is أَتْبَعْتُهُ إِيَّاهَا, literally “I made them to follow it”, which comes to the same thing as “I made it to be followed by them”.

he fasted six days after Ramaḍān—شيّع رَمَضَانَ

Or شيّع شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ, a phrase with a word left out, meaning he fasted six days after the month of Ramaḍān; that is, أَتْبَعَهُ بِهَا.

Said of a guest: to bid him farewell and bring him to his place of alighting, apparently his first place of alighting, or to show him honour.

Apparently on the occasion of his departure, to bid him farewell.

شايعهُ means the same.

2.2.6he followed him, not coming up with him, but always going behind him—شيّعهُ

This is sometimes the meaning. See المُشَيِّعَةُ under مُشَيَّعٌ.

And شيّعهُ بِالنَّارِ He burned him, or it, with fire. (S, K, TA.) Of anything that has been burned, one says, شُيِّعَ . (TA.)

Core sense — the following of another, conforming or complying with him; befriending himgenerated

3.1he followed him, or conformed with him, in an affair—شايعهُ عَلَى أَمْرٍ

Primarily: the following of another, or conforming with him, in an affair or an opinion; also شِيَاعٌ [a maṣdar of شايعهُ, like the former].

تَشَيُّعٌ has the same meaning [if it is not a mistranscription for تَشْيِيعٌ, which I rather think it is].

It also means the agreeing, or complying, with him, or obeying him.

[and شِيَاعٌ]. Or: he did so and also strengthened him.

he conformed with him in an opinion—على رَأْىٍ

Also شيّعهُ عَلَيْهِ, referring to an opinion [and an affair].

my leg does not conform with [my wish] nor help me to walk, nor does my shank—مَا تُشَايِعُنِى رِجْلِى وَلَا سَاقِى
his soul complied with him, and encouraged him, to do that—شَايَعَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ عَلَى ذٰلِكَ

Also شَيَّعَتْهُ.

Also: he befriended him, or was friendly to him; the same as وَالَاهُ, from الوَلِىُّ.

الشِّيَاعُ occurs in a tradition, as some relate it, and is explained there as meaning المُفَاخَرَةُ بِكَثْرَةِ الجِمَاعِ.

AA says that it is a mistranscription for السِّبَاعُ, with س and ب; or that it may be from شَاعَةٌ, meaning “a wife”.

اشتاعت ببولها means the same, and اشاع is used in like manner of a he-camel.

Said of a man; the sect is the شِيعَة [q. v.], and such a man is a شِيَعِىّ.

According to Golius it is explained in the KL as meaning he left a portion of a thing undistributed, but this explanation is not in my copy of that work.

The word is applied to one, to two, to a plural number, and to the male and the female alike, without change.

The plural is شِيَعٌ and أَشْيَاعٌ, the latter a plural of a plural; and the former is applied to any people, or party, whose affair, or case, is one, who follow one another's opinion.

Afterwards الشِّيعَةُ became the name of a particular party, or sect, being applied chiefly to all who took ʿAlee and the people of his house as their friends, or lords.

They followed ʿAlee, saying that he was the rightful Imám after the Apostle of God, and holding that the office of Imám should not pass away from him and his descendants.

They are an innumerable people, who are innovators; the extreme zealots among them are the Imámeeyeh, who revile the Two Sheykhs [Aboo-Bekr and ʿOmar], and the most extreme of them call the Two Sheykhs disbelievers; some of them rise to the pitch of [that misbelief which is termed] الزَّنْدَقَة [q. v.].

It is also applied to a single person of this party, or sect, and such a person is likewise called شِيَعِىٌّ: see form 5.
