Core sense — the skin of the head; the extremities; a thing of no accountgenerated
1the skin of the head—شَوَاةٌ
The headword is the plural of this word — or rather it is a collective generic noun of which this word is the ism waḥda.
So [according to some] in the Kur 70:16. Or: the outside of the skin of the head, in which the hair grows. (Aboo-Safwán, in art. بشر.) And some say: the outside of all, or of any part, of the skin.
The headword means the arms or hands and the legs or feet, or the fore and hind legs, and the extremities collectively, and the head of a human being, or the قِحْف of the head [i.e. the bone above the brain, or a separate portion of the skull, or a distinct bone of the skull]; but of a horse, the legs and not the head, because one says عَبْلُ الشَّوَى [i.e. thick in the legs], which cannot relate to a horse's head; and any part that is not a [vital] place, that is, where a wound causes death, such as the legs.
a woman having cracked, or chapped, feet—ثَالِبَةُ الشَّوَى
Mentioned in art. ثلب.
Qur’ān 70:16 approximate — somewhere between 70:1 and 70:17 Lane cites “Kur lxx. 16”
Qur’ān 70:16 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰPlucking out (his being) right to the skull!-Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1figurative · مجاز — inferreda missing of the object aimed at—شَوًى
It is also a noun [apparently a quasi-maṣdar] from أَشْوَاهُ as said of a shooter or caster.
Hence the saying of the Hudhalee — according to one report, Khálid Ibn-Zuheyr: [And, or for, some speech is a sentence that does not hit a place where a wound would not cause death — that is, it does not miss its object, when it escapes quickly from the upper surface of the tongue — but kills.]
shāhidفَإِنَّ مِنَ القَوْلِ الَّتِى لَا شَوَى لَهَاإِذَا زَلَّ ظَهْرِ اللِّسَانِ ٱنْفِلَاتُهُ
Here كَلِمَة is a word understood.
Used in the same way of anything that has missed the object aimed at, even where it really has no place in which a wound would cause death, and nothing properly called شَوًى.
It also means a mistake, the same as خَطَأٌ.
1.2figurative · مجازeverything that befalls the faster is a matter of no account, except absence of mind—كُلُّ مَا أَصَابَ الصَّائِمَ شَوًى إِلَّا الغَيْبَةَ
Also a thing, or an affair, that is paltry, mean, despicable, or of no account or weight or worth; in this sense from the same word as means the extremities of an animal.
From a tradition of Mujáhid; that is, nothing that befalls the faster annuls his fast except الغيبة, for this does annul it.
1.3figurative · مجاز — inferred
And the worse, or viler, sort of cattle, of camels, and of sheep or goats; and the small, or young, of them. [See also شُوَايَةٌ.]
1.4figurative · مجاز — inferred
And a remainder, or remaining portion. [See, again, شُوَايَةٌ.]
1.5figurative · مجاز — inferred
Also the same as إِبْقَآءٌ [the making, or causing, or allowing, to remain; or perhaps to continue in life — and if it means this, it may be from the sense explained above, since an animal hit in a part that is not vital is allowed to live].

(S, TA.) And شَوًى is used [app. in like manner, as a quasi-inf. n.,] in the case of anything that has missed an object of aim, though there be to it [really] no place where a wound would occasion death nor anything that is [properly] termed شَوًى [as meaning a place where a wound will not occasion death]. Hence, in a trad. of Mujáhid, كُلُّ مَا أَصَابَ الصَّائِمَ شَوًى إِلَّا الغَيْبَةَ [Everything that befalls the faster is a matter of no account, except absence of mind]; i. e. nothing that befalls the faster annuls his fast except الغيبة , for this does annul it. (TA.) [See, again, شُوَايَةٌ .] Also i. q. إِبْقَآءٌ [The making, or causing, or suffering, to remain; or, perhaps, to continue in life, and if it mean thus, it may be from the same word in a sense expl. above, for the animal that one hits in a part that is not vital is suffered to continue in life].
