Form 1شَنِئَهُ2 senses
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarشَنْءٌ

Core sense — he hated him; he gave him his due, he acknowledged itgenerated

1.1he hated himشَنَأَهُ

AHeyth says this is a bad dialectal variant of the first form.

.

Maṣdar شَنْءٌ, شِنْءٌ, شُنْءٌ (Aboo-'Amr Esh-Sheybánee), and شَنْأَةٌ — in the CK شَناءَة, that is, شَنَآءَةٌ, which is added later in the TA, not as in the K, and mentioned in the S, though not called a maṣdar there — and شَنَأٌ (Es-Safákusee), and شَنَآءٌ (as from J, but perhaps from Az, since I do not find it in the S), and مَشْنَأٌ (Es-Safákusee, not the K), and مَشْنَأَةٌ and مَشْنُؤَةٌ — the last in the CK مَشْنُوءَة, that is, مَشْنُوْءَةٌ — and مَشْنِئَةٌ (Es-Safákusee).

شَنَآنٌ is irregular, being of a measure regularly used only for the maṣdar of a verb signifying motion and agitation, like ضَرَبَانٌ and خَفَقَانٌ; for though it has been said that the hatred it signifies is attended by anger, and that anger is accompanied by agitation of the heart, there is no necessary connection between hatred and anger. It is irregular also in being of a measure not proper to the maṣdar of a transitive verb.

شَنْآنٌ is also irregular, and is said to be the only instance of its kind except لَيَّانٌ, though a few others have been mentioned, such as زَيْدَانٌ, which is not well known, and خَشْيَانٌ, of which the same may be said.

Also وَشْكَانٌ, perhaps a simple substantive; and جَوْلَانٌ, which is said to occur in a verse, perhaps shortened from جَوَلَان by poetic licence. AO mentions شَنَانٌ without ء, as being like شَنْآنٌ.

These maṣdars are fourteen, which IKtt says is the greatest number belonging to any one verb; only seven other verbs, he says, have this number, namely قَدَرَ, لَقِىَ, وَرَدَ, هَلَكَ, تَمَّ, مَكَثَ and غَلَبَ. But Es-Safákusee makes the maṣdars of شَنِئَ fifteen, though I do not find the fifteenth form mentioned — perhaps it is مَشْنُوْءَةٌ; and this is the greatest number known.

Or, as some say, he hated him violently.

يشنى, apparently يُشْنَى for يُشْنَأُ, with the hemzeh changed into ى, occurs in a tradition.

he (a man) was hated, or made hateful, even if beautiful or comelyشُنِئَ
1.2he gave him his right, or dueشَنِئَ لَهُ حَقَّهُ

So says A'Obeyd; but according to Th the form is شَنَأَ إِلَيْهِ, like مَنَعَ, and this is the more correct. Muḍāriʿ of each شَنَاَ.

he acknowledged itشَنِئَ بِهِ

Or: he gave him his right, or due — the meaning in the K may be simply he gave it — and declared himself clear, or quit, of him or it; as also شَنَأَ. According to SM this last is wrong, for he says the author of the K should have said شَنِئَ إِلَيْهِ, like شَنَأَ: he gave him, and declared himself clear, or quit, of him or it.

he produced the thingشَنِئَ الشَّىْءَ

Or, as A'Obeyd says, شَنِئَ حَقَّهُ: he acknowledged his right, or due, and produced it from his possession.

Nounشَنُوْءَةٌ4 senses · 2 main

Core sense — keeping far from unclean things; one who keeps aloof from themgenerated

1

Keeping oneself far, or aloof, from unclean things; and doing so continually, or continually purifying oneself; as also شَنُؤَةٌ, and, according to the K, شُنُوْءَةٌ, though this last is not found elsewhere.

1.1the name of a tribe of El-Yemenأَزْدُ شَنُوْءَةَ

From this; the tribe is sometimes called أَزْدُ شَنُوَّةَ.

It was so called because of شَنْآن among them, that is, because of mutual hatred that arose among them; from which it seems that شَنُوْءَةٌ also means hatred.

Or because they removed far from their original district.

Or, according to El-Khafájee, because of their high lineage and their good deeds, from the phrase رَجُلُ شَنُوْدَةٍ, meaning a man of pure lineage and of manly virtue; and AO says the like.

1.2

According to Reiske, as reported by Freytag, who writes it شَنُؤَةٌ in all its senses, Meyd explains it as what is thought low or mean, in words and in actions.

2one who keeps himself far, or aloof, from unclean thingsشَنُؤَةٌ

The headword has this meaning too, so both words are adjectives as well as substantives.

Show Lane's original text
The removing oneself far, or keeping aloof, from unclean things; (S, K, TA;) and the continual doing so, or the continual purification of oneself; as also شَنُؤَةٌ ; and accord. to the K, شُنُوْءَةٌ , but this is not found elsewhere. (TA.) Hence, (S,) أَزْدُ شَنُوْءَةَ , the appellation of a tribe of El-Yemen; (S, K; *) sometimes called أَزْدُ شَنُوَّةَ : (ISk, S, K:) [or] this tribe was so called because of شَنْآن among them; (K, TA;) i. e. because of mutual hatred that occurred among them: (TA:) [whence it seems that شَنُوْءَةٌ signifies also Hatred:] or because of their removing far from their [original] district: or, accord. to El-Khafájee, because of their high lineage, and good deeds; from the phrase رَجُلُ شَنُوْدَةٍ , meaning A man of pure lineage and of manly virtue; and AO says the like. (TA.) [And accord. to Reiske, as stated by Freytag, (who has written it شَنُؤَةٌ in all its senses,) it is expl. by Meyd as meaning What is esteemed sordid, of words and of actions.] Also One who removes himself far, or keeps aloof, from unclean things; (K, TA;) and so شَنُؤَةٌ . (TA.) Thus both of these words are epithets, as well as substs. (TA.)

Core sense — hating; hated, odiousgenerated

1

An adjective applied to a man; its feminine is شَنْآنَةٌ and شَنْأَى, so that one may say either شَنْآنٌ or شَنْآنُ.

It signifies either hating or, like مَشْنُوْءٌ, hated; the first meaning seems to be indicated by what immediately precedes it in the K, but the second appears from what follows here to be the right one, and perhaps it is what the K means.

As also شَنَانِئَةٌ, or شَنَائِيَةٌ, for which see شَنَآءَةٌ: so according to different copies of the K.

1.1

In the Qur'ān, 5:3 and 5:11, it is according to some a maṣdar, and some read شَنَآن there.

According to others it is an adjective, meaning مُبْغَضٌ or بَغِيضٌ, that is, hated or odious.

Qur’ān 5:1 approximate — somewhere between 5:1 and 5:31 Lane cites “Kur v. 3”
1.2figurative · مجازthe cold of winterشَنْآنُ الشِّتَآءِ

Occurring in a tradition of Kaab; said to be a metaphor for بَرْدُ الشِّتَآءِ, because the cold is hated.

Or, as some say, by its بَرْد is meant ease and repose; so the meaning intended is either mutual hatred or ease and repose.
