Form 1شَقَّهُ16 senses · 2 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarشَقٌّ شُقُوقٌ

Core sense — he clave it, split it lengthwise; it was hard, or distressing, to himgenerated

1.1he clave it in piecesشقّق الحَطَبَ

he cut it, or divided it, lengthwise — he clave, split, rived, or slit it, so as to separate it (rending, tearing, breaking, or bursting it asunder), or without separating it (cracking, chapping, gashing, slashing, furrowing, or cutting it open); syn. صَدَعَهُ. Mentioned in the TA under قد.

More explicitly, الشَّقُّ means الصَّدْعُ البَائِنُ, the cleaving and the like that separates; or غَيْرُ البَائِنِ, that which does not separate; or الصَّدْعُ, cleaving and the like in a general sense.

In the same way, but with an intensive meaning, or implying repetition of the action or its application to several objects, شقّقهُ: he clave it much, or in pieces, or in several places.

وَغَيْرَهُ means شَقَّهُ, properly: he clave the firewood and the like in pieces.

In the CK, شَقَّ الحَطَبَ is put by mistake for شقّق الحطب.

1.1.1he clave his head, or his pericraniumشَقَّ رَأْسَهُ

Sometimes, as in an instance in the K under شَقَأَ: he divided the hair of his head.

1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe separated himself from the community, and particularly from that of the Muslimsشَقَّ العَصَا

Literally, he split the staff: the staff is called by this name only while it is whole, not when it is split.

Accord. to Lth, يَشُقُّ عَصَا المُسْلِمِينَ and يُشَاقُّهُمْ mean the same; but they differ in meaning, as will be shown later.

he caused disunion and dissension among the Muslimsشَقَّ عَصَا المُسْلِمِينَ

Said of a خَارِجِىّ, that is, a heretic or schismatic.

he broke the compact of allegiance, or obedience; he became a rebelشَقَّ عَصَا الطَّاعَةِ
1.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredno, by Him who clave men for the riding upon horses, and the mountains for the flowing of the torrentلَا وَالَّذِى شَقَّ الرِّجَالَ لِلْخَيْلِ وَالجِبَالَ لِلسَّيْلِ

This is the apparent meaning; the saying is mentioned by IAar, but not explained by him.

In the M is added وَعِنْدِى أَنَّهُ جَعَلَ الرِّجَالَ وَالجِبَالَ جُمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً ثُمَّ خَرَقَهُمَا فَجَعَلَ الرِّجَالَ لِهٰذِهِ وَالجِبَالَ لِهٰذَا, an expression of opinion which is by no means clear to me, though it can be reconciled with my rendering.

1.1.4the property is divided between us in halvesالمَالُ بَيْنَنَا شَقَّ الأَبْلَمَةِ
the cattle are divided between us in halvesالأُبْلُمَةِ

Both mean: we are equal in respect of the property, or the cattle; the dividing being like the dividing of the ابلمة.

The ابلمة means the kind of leaf called خُوصَة, which, when it is split lengthwise, splits into halves.

Accord. to Aboo-Ziyád, the ابلمة is a herb, or leguminous plant, which puts forth pods like those of the bean; when you split them lengthwise they split into equal halves from one end to the other.

شَقَّ is in the accusative as a maṣdar, مَشْقُوقٌ being understood. See also شِقٌّ.

1.1.5figurative · مجازit clave the gum and came forthشَقَّ

Said of the canine tooth of a child in the same way: it made its first appearance. Said also of a plant: it came forth when the ground first cleaved open from it.

. Said of the canine tooth of a camel; said to be a dialectal variant of شَقَأَ.

1.1.6figurative · مجاز

Also, with and, said of the dawn: it rose, as though it clave the place of its rising and came out from it.

1.1.7figurative · مجازsaid of lightning: it clave the cloudsانشقّ

Also, with and, said of lightning: it clave the clouds and extended high, into the middle of the sky, without going to the right and left. So says A'Obeyd. See شَقِيقٌ.

said of lightning: it clave the cloudsتشقّق

These two are said to mean اِنْعَقَّ, probably the same thing; see عَقِيقَةٌ. Or, as explained in the S and also in the O under عق, it was, or became, in a state of commotion in the clouds.

Or تشقّق, said of lightning, means it spread wide and long.

1.1.8figurative · مجاز — inferredhe passed along the wayشَقَّ السَّبِيلَ

In the K under عبر. As though he cut the way, or furrowed it.

he crossed the river by swimmingشَقَّ النَّهْرَ

In the TA under قطع.

1.1.9figurative · مجاز — inferredhe opened a way, or channel, for the water to flow outشَقَّ المَآءَ

Syn. بَجَسَهُ. In the A and K under بجس.

1.1.10figurative · مجاز — inferredhe, or it, disordered his affair, or state of affairs, so that it became inconsistentشَقَّ أَمْرَهُ

.

A phrase like شَقَّ العَصَا mentioned above; and apparently so too is what follows.

1.1.11figurative · مجاز — inferredhe cut short, or broke off, the speech; or he ceased from speakingشَقَّ الكَلَامَ

Same as قَدَّهُ, which is also explained as synonymous with قَطَعَهُ: this generally means he cut short, or broke off, the speech, or he ceased from speaking; but sometimes, and perhaps here, he articulated the speech. Compare a meaning of form 2.

In the M and L under قد.

1.1.12

See also form 8.

1.1.13figurative · مجاز — inferredthe eyes of the dying man became fixedly openشَقَّ بَصَرُ المَيِّتِ

Same as شَخَصَ: his eyelids became raised upwards, and he looked intently, and became disquieted, or disturbed.

Also: the dying man looked at a thing, his sight not recoiling to him; said of one to whom death is present. Or simply: the eyes of the dying man became open.

One should not say شَقَّ المَيِّتُ بَصَرَهُ; and شُقَّ, with damm to the ش, is not approved.

1.1.14figurative · مجاز — inferredit affected him severely; it distressed, afflicted, troubled, or wearied himشَقَّ عَلَيْهِ

So in the M and K; in the S عَلَىَّ, and in the Msb عَلَيْنَا., maṣdar شَقٌّ and مَشَقَّةٌ — or the latter is a simple noun, as the M and Msb seem to indicate.

he caused him to fall into a difficult, distressing, or grievous caseشَقَّ عَلَيْهِ

Said of a thing, or of an affair or event: it was difficult, hard, grievous, or severe to him, and burdensome, oppressive, or troublesome to him.

The maṣdar here is apparently شَقٌّ only. He imposed upon him what was burdensome, oppressive, or troublesome.

the journey was hard, or far-extendingشَقَّتِ السَّفْرَةُ
1.2it became affected with the disease that causes cracksشُقَّ

Said of the solid hoof, and of the pastern of a horse or the like; the disease is termed شُقَاق.

maṣdarمُشَاقَّةٌ

Core sense — he acted contrariously, adversely, and with hostility towards himgenerated

3.1figurative · مجاز — inferred

Maṣdars مُشَاقَّةٌ and شِقَاقٌ, the latter occurring in the Qur'ān 2:131 and 4:39 and elsewhere: he acted with him contrariously, adversely, and with hostility; properly, each of them doing to the other what was distressing, grievous, or troublesome, so that each of them was in a شِقّ, a side, other than that of his fellow; or as though he became in a شِقّ, that is, a side, in respect of him.

Er-Rāghib: the maṣdar means the being in a شِقّ, or side, other than that of one's fellow. Or it is from شَقُّ العَصَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ صَاحِبِكَ, meaning the causing of disunion and dissension between you and your fellow, so that it is figurative. Or the primary meaning of الشِّقَاقُ is the being mutually remote.

Core sense — the half of a thing; a side; difficulty, hardshipgenerated

1I took the half of the sheep or goatأَخَذْتُ شِقَّ الشَّاةِ

The half of a thing of any kind, as also شَقٌّ; or the half of a thing when it is cloven, split, or divided lengthwise, as also شِقَّةٌ.

شِقَّةَ الشَّاةِ is used in the same way; the common people pronounce the ش with fet-ḥ.

take this half of the sheep or goatخُذْ هٰذَا الشِّقَّ

شِقَّة here means half.

give alms, though it be but the half of a dateتَصَدَّقُوا وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ
the property is between us in two equal halvesالمَالُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكَ شِقَّ الشَّعَرَةِ

From a tradition; the meaning is: do not think anything little that is given as alms.

شَقَّ الشَّعَرَةِ is used in the same way. In the CK and in my manuscript copy of the K, شقُّ; but the former reading appears to be the right one, شَقَّ being a maṣdar, as in a similar saying in the former half of the first paragraph of this article, and شِقَّ being a noun used as a maṣdar, or for كَشِقِّ.

1.2

That means either of the two dorsers, or panniers, or oblong chests, which are borne one on either side by a camel, and which, with a small tent over them, make up a مَحْمِل; see that last word, and مَحَارَةٌ.

Said in a tradition; شَقَائِقُ is the plural of شَقِيقٌ as feminine, or of شَقِيقَةٌ in the same sense. As though they were cloven from them; or because Eve was created from Adam.

1.8

And a name for a thing at which one looks. This is apparently taken from the following saying of Lth, in which I think الشِّقُّ is a mistranscription for الشَّقُّ, meaning the crack, or the like.

Lth: الشَّقُّ is the maṣdar of شَقَقْتُ, and الشِّقُّ is a name for that at which one looks, that is, for the visible effect of the act the verb denotes; and the plural is الشُّقُوقُ, which is well known as the plural of الشَّقُّ.

2which you would not reach except with difficulty, or distress, of the soulsلَمْ تَكُونُوا بَالِغِيهِ إِلَّا بِشِقِ ٱلْأَنْفُسِ

Also the same as مَشَقَّةٌ: difficulty, hardship, distress, affliction, trouble, inconvenience, fatigue, or weariness. Er-Rāghib: and languor, or lack of power, that comes over the mind and the body.

And so شَقٌّ; it is sometimes pronounced with fet-ḥ, as mentioned by A'Obeyd and by AZ; or this is a maṣdar, and شِقٌّ is the noun.

شُقَّةٌ and شِقَّةٌ also mean the same as مَشَقَّةٌ, or such as overtakes a man as a result of travel; the plurals of these two are شُقَقٌ, mentioned by Fr, and شِقَقٌ, mentioned on the authority of some of the tribe of Keys. The plural of مَشَقَّةٌ is مَشَاقُّ and مَشَقَّاتٌ.
