muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarشَغْلٌ
Core sense — he, or it, busied him, occupied him, employed himgenerated
1.1he, or it, busied him much—شغّلهُ
maṣdar شَغْلٌ and شُغْلٌ, the latter on the authority of Sb.
Said of a man, or of an affair: he, or it, busied him, occupied him, or employed him; the same as أَلْهَاهُ, and particularly he, or it, busied him so as to divert him from something. So explained in art. لهو and in the commentaries on Qur'ān 15:3.
The doubled form denotes muchness.
اشغلهُ is a good variant of شَغَلَهُ, or it is rare, or bad. According to IDrd, one should not say أَشْغَلْتُهُ, since it is bad. According to IF, they scarcely ever say أَشْغَلْتُ (written اِشْتَغَلَ in the Msb), but it is allowable; no leading lexicologist is known to have pronounced it good.
Hence the saying شَغَلَتْ سَعَاتِى جَدْوَاىَ, or, as some relate it, شغلت شِعَابِى جدواى.
See another example under شَاغِلٌ.
he was, or became, busied by it—شُغِلَ بِهِ
Equivalent to تَلَهَّى; and اشتغل به means the same.
I was busied by such a thing, so as to be diverted from you—شُغِلْتُ عَنْكَ بِكَذَا
اِشْتَغَلْتُ has the same sense.
he busied himself, so as to divert himself from him, or it—تشاغل عَنْهُ
Equivalent to تَلَهَّى; so in art. لهو and in the commentaries on Qur'ān 80:10.
Some disallow اِشْتَغَلَ in the form of an active verb, but say اُشْتُغِلَ in the form of a passive verb; yet it is originally a quasi-passive of أَشْغَلْتُهُ, as اِحْتَرَقَ and اِكْتَهَلَ are of أَحْرَقْتُهُ and أَكْهَلْتُهُ [though why of أَشْغَلْتُهُ rather than of شَغَلْتُهُ I do not see]. Az mentions the use of its active and passive participles.
According to AHát and IDrd, one should not say اِشْتَغَلَ; but IF mentions اُشْتُغِلَ فُلَانٌ بِالشَّىْءِ, as transmitted from the Arabs, and the ism mafʿūl as well.

we occupy the water so as to keep it from you—المَآءَ
The meaning is that it is enough for us and no more than enough; mentioned in art. شفه.
