muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarشَعْبٌ شَعَبٌ

Core sense — he collected, or united; he separated, divided; he repaired a cracked thinggenerated

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredtheir union became dissolved, or their tribe became separatedتَفَرَّقَ شَعْبُهُمْ

.

He collected, brought together, or united a thing or a people or party; and also he separated, divided, disunited, or scattered a thing or a people or party: so the verb has two opposite meanings.

A'Obeyd and Aboo-Ziyád state this expressly; but IDrd says that it does not have two opposite meanings in one and the same dialect: each meaning belongs to the dialect of one people only.

This use seems to come from شَعْبٌ meaning a tribe.

One also says شَتَّ شَعْبُهُمْ, meaning they became separated after having been gathered together.

their separation became closed up, or their tribe drew togetherاِلْتَأَمَ شَعْبُهُمْ
death separated themشَعَبَتْهُمُ المَنِيَّةُ
death separated him from his companionsشَعَبَتْهُ شَعُوبُ

That is, they drew together after having been separated.

Said of a man when he has died. In art. عبل the form اِشْتَعَبَتْهُ occurs, perhaps a mistranscription.

what is this judicial decision with which you have divided the people?مَا هٰذِهِ الفُتْيَا ٱلَّتِى شَعَبْتَ بِهَا النَّاسَ

Said in a tradition. Another reading is التى شَغَبَتْ فِى النَّاسِ, which means: which has stirred up evil among the people, according to IAth.

the man broke up, deranged, or disorganized his state of affairsشَعَبَ الرَّجُلُ أَمْرَهُ

The verb is also explained as: he rendered his state of affairs unsound, impaired it, or marred it.

'Alee Ibn-El-'Adheer El-Ghanawee says: [And when you see the man break up his state of affairs as one breaks up a staff, and persevere in disobedience, or rebellion]

shāhid
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ المَرْءَ يَشْعَبُ أَمْرَهُشَعْبَ العَصَا وَيَلَجُّ فِى العِصْيَانِ
1.1.1a little repairing amid much impairingشَعْبٌ صَغِيرٌ مِنْ شَعْبٍ كَبِيرٍ

Occurring in a tradition of 'Omar.

Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above. He repaired a cracked thing, such as a wooden bowl or some other vessel, by closing up its crack or cracks, or by piecing it. See form 2, which has a similar meaning but implies muchness.

And, in a general sense: he repaired, mended, adjusted, or put into a right state.

It also has the opposite meaning, in the same or in another dialect: he cracked a thing, such as a wooden bowl; and he corrupted, rendered unsound, impaired, or marred it.

1.1.2give me a portion of the propertyاِشْعَبْ لِى شُعْبَةً مِنَ المَالِ

[He gave a portion of property, as though he broke it off.]

1.1.3he sent a messenger to himإِلَيْهِ
he sent a messenger to such a placeإِلَى مَوْضِعِ كَذَا

on this sense Said of a commander or prince.

1.1.4the bridle turned the horse back, or held him from the direction he was goingشَعَبَ اللِّجَامُ الفَرَسَ

He turned, or sent, him or it away, or back; muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above.

1.1.5what has diverted you from me?مَا شَعَبَكَ عَنِّى

He, or it, diverted a man by occupying him, busying him, or engaging his attention.

1.2

It is also intransitive: see form 4.

1.2.1he yearned towards them with such a number of men, and quitted his companionsشَعَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ فِى عَدَدِ كَذَا

[Thus it signifies He quitted his companions, wanting others.]

1.2.2

And he, or it, appeared, distinct from others; from this the month شَعْبَان is said to be named.

1.3

Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above. Said of a camel: he cropped the upper, or uppermost, parts of trees or shrubs.

1.4he was wide, or very wide, between the horns and between the shouldersشَعِبَ

.

Said of a goat and of a gazelle.

Apparently: he collected several things, or he collected much; and he separated several things, or he separated much.

2.1.1

Also: he repaired a cracked wooden bowl, or some other vessel, in several places, by closing up its cracks or by piecing it.

Apparently also, in a general sense: he repaired, mended, adjusted, or put several things into a right state; or he repaired much. It seems also to have the opposite meanings: he cracked several things, or cracked a thing in several places; and he corrupted, rendered unsound, impaired, or marred several things, or did so much.

Form 4اشعب1 sense

Core sense — he died; he separated himself from others, never to returngenerated

4.1

He died: or he separated himself from another or others, never to return.

The same is said of شعّب, or شَعَبَ according to different copies of the K, the latter as in the L.

En-Nábighah El-Jaadee says: [And they were men of divided races or tribes, or were divided races or tribes of men; so they perished, or separated, never to return]

shāhid
وَكَانُوا أُنَاسًا مِنْ شُعُوبٍ فَأَشْعَبُوا

, or وَكَانُوا شُعُوبًا مِنْ أُنَاسٍ according to different readings.

IB says, on the first reading, that they were of men who should perish, so they perished; and on the other, that they were of those whom شعوب should overtake.

IB's explanations seem at first sight to indicate that he read شَعُوبَ and شَعُوبًا, neither of which is admissible; each of his explanations apparently relates to both readings, as though he understood the poet to mean that they were men separated from different tribes, to be overtaken by others, so they perished.

Core sense — it became separated, divided, or dispersed; it became distant; it became repairedgenerated

5.1figurative · مجاز — inferredthey separated in search of the watersتَشَعَّبُوا فِى طَلَبِ المِيَاهِ

This and انشعب are quasi-passive verbs, the first of شَعَّبَ and the second of شَعَبَ; so the first is most correctly taken as intensive in its meanings, or as relating to several things or persons, but it is said that both mean alike.

Or, by another explanation of the verb: it was rendered unsound, impaired, or marred.

on this sense See also form 2.

5.1.1

Also, of the second verb, or of each: it became closed up, or repaired by having its crack closed up, or by being pieced; said of a cracked thing.

Both verbs are equivalent to اِنْصَلَحَ, which means, in a general sense, it became rectified, repaired, mended, adjusted, or put into a right, or proper, state; but I have not found this verb in its own article in any of the lexicons.

The second also means: it became cracked; and so does the first, said of a number of things, or of a single thing cracked in several places. Hence both mean, in a general sense, it became corrupted, rendered unsound, impaired, or marred — a meaning which may fairly be given to the first verb in the phrase mentioned just before.

(Msb.) See also 2. One says also, تشعّب أَمْرُ الرَّجُلِ [The state of affairs of the man became broken up, discomposed, deranged, disorganized, or (agreeably with another explanation of the verb in what follows) rendered unsound, impaired, or marred]. (A.) Also ↓ the latter verb, [or each,] It became closed up; [or repaired by having a crack or cracks closed up, or by being pieced;] said of a cracked thing: (TA:) and ↓ both verbs, i. q. اِنْصَلَحَ [which means, in a general sense, it became rectified, repaired, mended, amended, adjusted, or put into a right, or proper, state; &c.; but I have not found this verb ( انصلح ) in its proper art. in any of the Lexicons]: (K, TA:) and ↓ the latter signifies also it became cracked; (A;) [and in like manner the former, said of a number of things; or it became cracked in several places when said of a single thing: and hence ↓ both signify, in a general sense, it became corrupted, rendered unsound, impaired, or marred; a meaning which may justly be assigned to the former verb in the phrase mentioned in the next preceding sentence.]

Core sense — a tribe, a nation, a people; separation, or union; distance; a crackgenerated

1

Maṣdar of شَعَبَ.

1.1

[Used as a simple noun it means collection, or union; and also separation, division, or disunion; and] a state of separation, division, or disunion; as also شُعْبَةٌ. Plural of the former, شُعُوبٌ.

1.2a man of the foreigners became a Muslimإِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الشُّعُوبِ أَسْلَمَ

[And, perhaps from this, as implying both union and division:] such as is divided into sub-tribes, of the tribes of the Arabs and of foreigners.

In my copy of the Msb, ما انقسمت فيه قبائل العرب, as though it meant the tribes of the Arabs collectively, agreeing with another explanation mentioned below; but I think there may be a mistranscription here.

Plural شُعُوبٌ.

Or, as some say, or also: a great tribe; the same as قَبِيلَةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ or حَىٌّ عَظِيمٌ, the parent of the tribes called قَبَائِل, to which they trace their origin and which comprises them; or, as some say, a great tribe forming a branch of a قَبِيلَة, or a قَبِيلَة itself.

A'Obeyd says, on the authority of Ibn-El-Kelbee, from his father, that the شَعْب is greater than the قَبِيلَة, next to which is the فَصِيلَة, then the عَمَارَة, then the بَطْن, then the فَخِذ.

But IB says that the true order is the one stated by Ez-Zubeyr Ibn-Bekkár, and is as follows: the genealogies of the Arabs consist of six degrees; first the شَعْب, then the قَبِيلَة, then the عَمَارَة — with fet-h and with kesr, to the ع — then the بَطْن, then the فَخِذ, and then the فَصيلَة. So Khuzeymeh is a شعب, Kináneh a قبيلَة, Kureysh an عمارة, Kuseí a بطن, Háshim a فخذ, and El-'Abbás a فصيلة.

Aboo-Usámeh says that these classes agree with the order found in the structure of man: the شعب is the greatest of them, taken from the شَعْب [or suture] of the head; next is the قبيلة, from the قبيلة [a term applied to any one of the four principal bones] of the head; then the عمارة, which is the breast; then the بطن [or belly]; then the فخذ [or thigh]; and then the فصيلة, which is the shank. Some add to these the عَشِتيرَة, which consists of few in comparison with those mentioned before; some add after this the رَهْط; and some also add the جِذْم before the شعب. So in art. بطن. The plural is as above.

It also means a nation, people, race, or family of mankind, the same as جِيلٌ, as explained by IM and others; in the K, and in a copy of the A, wrongly جَبَل [a mountain]. But Aboo-'Obeyd El-Bekree says, strangely, that according to all except Bundár the word in this sense is شِعْبٌ, with kesr.

And the plural شُعُوبٌ is said to be applied especially to the foreigners.

Here it is said that العَجَم means the foreigners; but see الشُّعُوبِيَّةُ.

1.3the distance, or remoteness, of the abode, or dwellingشَعْبُ الدَّارِ

Also, as implying separation: distance, or remoteness.

1.5

And the place of junction, that is, the suture, of the قَبَائِل [or principal bones] of the head; the شَأْن which joins the قبائل of the head. The قبائل in the head are four in number: the frontal bone, the occipital bone, and the two parietal bones.

Core sense — a road, or a road in a mountain; a water-course; a ravine between two mountainsgenerated

1

A road; or a road in a mountain: primarily a road in a mountain and in valleys, and afterwards applied to any road. [See also مَشْعَبٌ.] Plural شِعَابٌ.

And a water-course, a place in which water flows, in a low, or depressed, tract of land such as is called a بَطْن, having two elevated borders, and in width equal to the stature of a man lying down, and sometimes running between the faces of two mountains.

Or it means, or also means, a ravine, gap, or pass between two mountains.

If it is not connected with the shore, but a bowshot away, it is called جُهْنٌ. So in art. جهن.

1.2

And a brand, or mark made with a hot iron, upon camels, peculiar to the Benoo-Minkar, in form like the hooked stick called مِحْجَن.

Or a brand upon the thigh, lengthwise, consisting of two lines meeting at the top and separated at the bottom; or a brand united at the upper part and separated at the lower part, as Aboo-'Alee says in the Tedhkireh; but there is an omission here, so perhaps the reverse is meant.

Or a brand upon the neck, like the مِحْجَن, as Suh says in the R.

Core sense — death, so named because it separates peoplegenerated

1death became near to himأَقَصَّتْهُ شَعُوبُ

A name for Death, so called because it separates people: ال without the article, imperfectly declinable; and الشَّعُوبُ with the article, perfectly declinable, though several authors disallow this latter and count it wrong. The former is a proper name.

J says that it is determinate and does not admit the article ال.

In the L it is said that شَعُوبُ and الشَّعُوبُ both mean as above, and that in either case the word may originally be an adjective, being like the adjectives قَتُول and ضَرُوب; and if so, the article here is as in العَبَّاسُ, الحَسَنُ and الحٰرِثُ. This view is supported by what is said of the word's derivation.

But whoever says شَعُوب, without the article, makes the word a pure noun and takes from it, in form, the character of an adjective; so the article is not necessarily attached to it, as it is not to عَبَّاس and حٰرِث. Yet the force of an adjective is still in it, as in جَابِرُ بْنُ حَبَّةَ, a name for bread, so called because it gives fresh strength to the hungry; and as in وَاسِط [a certain town], so called, according to Sb, because it lies midway between El-'Irák and El-Basrah. So in the L.

Said of a person who has been at the point of death and then escaped.

and I kept putting my foot upon his cheek until I made death visit himفَمَا زِلْتُ وَاضِعًا رِجْلِى عَلَى خَدِّهِ حَتَّى أَزَرْتُهُ شَعُوبَ
