Form 1شَرَاهُ12 senses · 5 main
muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarشِرًى شَرًى

Core sense — he sold it; he bought it; he persisted in it; he was angrygenerated

1.1figurative · مجاز[And of men is he] who sells [himself in the endeavour to obtain the approval of God]وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْرِى نَفْسَهُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاةِ ٱللّٰهِ

— the more used of the two, and of the dialect of Nejd — and شِرَآءٌ, of the dialect of El-Hijáz; or this last may be said with medd to make it match a preceding word, according to El-Munádee, or may be regarded as a maṣdar of شَارَاهُ.

Same as بَاعَهُ in the sense in which that is generally used, i.e. he sold it: he gave it for a price. It is also the same as اِشْتَرَاهُ in its usual sense, i.e. he bought it: he took it, or acquired it, for a price.

Or شَرَاهُ and اشتراه both signify بَاعَهُ, he sold it, the former being more used in this sense than the latter; and both also mean he bought it, he possessed it by sale, which is the more usual meaning of the latter.

And they sold him [for a deficient, or an insufficient, price]وَشَرَوْهُ بِثَمَنٍ بَخْسٍ
[Those are they who have purchased error with right direction]أُولَائِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا ٱلضَّلَالَةَ بِٱلْهُدَى

So each verb has two opposite meanings: the seller and the buyer both sell and buy, the price and the thing priced, so that each of the things exchanged is sold from one point of view and bought from another.

The first is from the Qur'ān 2:203, the second from 12:20, the third from 2:15.

Originally ٱشْتَرَيُوا, meaning who have taken الضلالة in exchange for الهدى (Ksh), or who have preferred الضلالة to الهدى (Ksh).

Of anyone who gives up one thing and lays hold of another one says اشتراه, used figuratively as meaning he took it in exchange بِغَيْرِهِ by giving up something else; and hence this saying in the Qur'ān.

1.1.1figurative · مجازhe advanced before the people to their enemy, and fought in defence of themشَرَى بِنَفْسِهِ عَنِ القَوْمِ

Or he went to the Sultán and spoke for the people, as though he sold himself for them; the ب in بنفسه being apparently redundant.

Or, as in the Tekmileh, شَرَى بِنَفْسِهِ إِلَى القَوْمِ: he advanced to the people, or party, and fought them.

1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe mocked at, laughed at, or derided such a oneشَرَى فُلَانًا

.

شَرَّاهُ has the same meaning; it is thus written under جَدَّعَهُ, perhaps to make it match جَدَّعَهُ.

1.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredhe angered such a one; or did evil to him, and angered himأَرْغَمَهُ

So also أَوْرَمَهُ and غَطَاهُ [or perhaps عَظَاهُ, for both are explained alike]: all said of God.

he did to him what brought evil upon him, or what displeased, grieved, or vexed himفَعَلَ بِهِ مَا شَرَاهُ

Synonymous with سَآءَهُ.

[May God remove him far from good or prosperity, or curse him, and do evil to him, or displease or grieve or vex him]لَحَاهُ ٱللّٰهُ وَشَرَاهُ
1.2God smote him, or may God smite him, with a certain eruptionشَرَى ٱللّٰهُ فُلَانًا

. The eruption is that termed شَرًى.

1.3he spread it out to dryشَرَاهُ

the same as شَرَّرَهُ.

In copies of the K, under شر, it is written in this sense شَرَّاهُ.

Said of flesh-meat, of a garment or piece of cloth, and of the preparation of curd called أَقِط.

1.4it shone, or gleamed, muchشَرِىَ

. Said of lightning.

Or it shone, or gleamed, and spread in the face of the clouds, or, as in the T, became dispersed in the face of the clouds.

اشرى means the same, or it shone, or gleamed, one flash after another; this verb is mentioned by Sgh.

1.4.1

And hence, said of the nose-rein of a camel: it was, or became, in a state of commotion, or of much commotion. [See also form 12.]

1.4.2

Also, with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar: he (a man) was, or became, angry; or he was, or became, flurried by reason of anger.

1.4.3it spread among themبَيْنَهُمْ

Said of evil, or mischief; or it became great, or formidable. Said in like manner of an affair, or event.

1.4.4he (a man) persisted, or persevered, in an affair, or in his error and his corrupt conductاستشرى

Said of a man, the first of these is like غَرِىَ in measure and meaning, i.e. he persisted, or persevered, in his anger.

he (a horse) persisted, or persevered, in his pace, or goingشَرِىَ فِى سَيْرِهِ

Maṣdar as above; also استشرى; or he exceeded the usual bounds in it, and went on without languor.

he (a horse) persisted, or persevered, in his runningاستشرى فِى عَدْوِهِ
he (a horse) strained his bridleشَرِىَ فِى لِجَامِهِ
his eye persisted in shedding tears, the tears pouring forth one after anotherشَرِيَتْ عَيْنُهُ بِالدَّمْعِ
1.5he, or his skin, broke out with a certain eruptionشَرِىَ

. The eruption is that termed شَرًى.

They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: the blasphemers Were, not Solomon, but the evil ones, teaching men Magic, and such things as came down at babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (Such things) without saying: "We are only for trial; so do not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they did sell their souls, if they but knew!

2:207

3.1he sold and bought with him; he bartered, or exchanged commodities, with himبَايَعَهُ

Maṣdar مُشَارَاةٌ and شِرَآءٌ.

That شاراه has both of these meanings is shown by the fact that مُشَارَاةٌ is also explained in the TA, on the authority of Er-Rāghib, as meaning the same as قِبَاضٌ.

3.1.1he persists in contention, litigation, or wrangling with himهُوَ يُشَارِيهِ

Core sense — a mountain tree of which bows are made; an artery; a fissure in a rockgenerated

1

This and شَرْيَانٌ: the former is the more in repute, and is said to be quasi-quadriliteral, like جِرْيَالٌ [and is therefore mentioned also in the TA under شرن], but IB holds it to be of the measure فِعْلَانٌ.

A kind of tree, of the عِضَاه of the mountains, of which bows are made; ism waḥda with ة.

AHn says that the tree so called grows in the manner, and to the height and width, of the species of lote-tree called سِدْر, and has a yellow, sweet نَبِقَة [or drupe].

He adds that Aboo-Ziyád says bows are made of the شريان, and the bow made of it is good, but black tinged with redness; its wood is among those woods of which good bows are commonly made, and they assert that it seldom, or never, becomes crooked.

Mbr says that the نَبْع, the شَوْحَط and the شريان are one kind of tree, differing in name and estimation according to the places of growth: what grows on the summit of the mountain is the نبع, and what grows at the base, or lower part, is the شريان. [But see شَوْحَطٌ.]

Core sense — a seller; a buyer; one of the Khárijitesgenerated

1

Selling, or a seller; and buying, or a buyer; also مُشْتَرٍ in both senses, though generally in the latter, whereas شَارٍ is generally used in the former. Plural of the first شُرَاةٌ.

1.1

Also, and شَارِىٌّ, in which latter the ى is not the ى of a relative noun but an affix strengthening the adjective, as in أَحْوَرُ and أَحْوَرِىٌّ [or أَحْمَرُ and أَحْمَرِىٌّ] and صُلَّبٌ and صُلَّبِىٌّ: one of the people to whom the appellation الشُّرَاةُ is applied, meaning the heretics, or schismatics, commonly known by the name of خَوَارِج [plural of خَارِجِىٌّ].

So called because they said, We have sold ourselves in obedience to God, i.e. for Paradise, when we separated ourselves from the erring Imáms; or because they sold themselves for the sake of what they believed; or because they said, God has purchased us and our possessions.

ISk says it is because of their violent hatred of the Muslims. The author of the K says it is from شَرِىَ, meaning “he was angry” and “he persisted, or persevered,” and charges J with error in explaining it as above, from their saying “we have sold ourselves”; but this charge is senseless, for J has followed here more than one of the leading authorities.

The author of the K has followed ISd, who, however, adds that as to themselves they say, “We are the شُرَاة,” because of the saying in the Qur'ān 2:203 [cited in the first sense of this article] and the saying in 9:112, “God has purchased, of the believers, themselves.” The like is said in the Nh, with the addition that شُرَاةٌ is the plural of شَارٍ, so that it is from شَرَى; or it may be from المُشَارَاةُ, meaning المُلَاجَّةُ. Moreover, the ism fāʿil of شَرِىَ is شَرٍ, and this has not شُرَاةٌ for its plural.

Qur’ān 2:207 approximate — somewhere between 2:191 and 2:223 Lane cites “Kur ii. 203”
Qur’ān 2:207 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
