42:13

The same religion has He established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah - the which We have sent by inspiration to thee - and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: Namely, that ye should remain steadfast in religion, and make no divisions therein: to those who worship other things than Allah, hard is the (way) to which thou callest them. Allah chooses to Himself those whom He pleases, and guides to Himself those who turn (to Him).

42:21

What! have they partners (in godhead), who have established for them some religion without the permission of Allah? Had it not been for the Decree of Judgment, the matter would have been decided between them (at once). But verily the Wrong-doers will have a grievous Penalty.

Core sense — a watering-place; the religious law of Godgenerated

1

This word, and مَشْرَعَةٌ and مَشْرُعَةٌ and مَشْرَعٌ and شَرَعٌ and شِرَاعُ مَآءٍ: a watering-place; a resort of drinkers [both men and beasts]; a place to which men come to drink and to draw water, and into which they sometimes bring their beasts to drink.

But the Arabs apply the term مشرعة or شريعة only to [a watering-place] that is permanent and visible to the eye, like the water of rivers, not water that one draws with the well-rope.

The plural of شَرِيعَةٌ is شَرَائِعُ, and that of مَشْرَعَةٌ or مَشْرَعٌ [or of both] is مَشَارِعُ, which is also explained as meaning gaps, or breaches, in the banks of rivers and the like by which men or beasts come to water.

And [in like manner it is said that] شَرِيعَةٌ means a place of descent to water, or a way to water.

Lane cites “Bd in v. 52” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.1the religious law of Godالشَّرِيعَةُ

And hence: الشِّرْعَةُ and الشَّرْعُ likewise mean الدِّينُ; because it is a way to the means of eternal life, or because it is manifest.

It consists of such ordinances as fasting, prayer, pilgrimage, the giving of the poor-rate, and marriage, and other acts of piety, of obedience to God, or of duty to God and to men. Plural as above.

شَرِيعَةٌ also means [a law, an ordinance, or a statute; and] a religion, or way of belief and practice in respect of religion; and, according to Ibn-'Arafeh, a way of belief or conduct that is manifest and right in religion; and so does شِرْعَةٌ.
