Said of a camel, and of a horse or the like: he took fright, or shied, and fled, or ran away at random; or became refractory, and went away at random, or broke loose, and went here and there out of liveliness. Synonymous with نَفَرَ and نَدَّ. Aboo-Bekr: and, simply, he fled, or ran away, said of a camel and the like.

What Kr says, and what J says [in the article نحى], is incorrect.

[As to the period since El-Islám shackled him, no]—أَمَا مُنْذُ قَيَّدَهُ الإِسْلَامُ فَلَا

The Prophet said this to Khowwát Ibn-Jubeyr, who then answered him. It points to a story told of Khowwát: being found by the Prophet sitting with some strange women, he tried to excuse himself by saying that he had a camel which took fright and ran away, and that he was looking for something to shackle it with. The Prophet used afterwards to taunt him by asking about the running-away of his camel.

such a one fled, or went away, from me—شَرَدَ عَنِّى فُلَانٌ

he made him take fright and flee, or run away at random; or made him become refractory, so that he went away at random, or broke loose, and went here and there out of liveliness; said of a camel, and of a horse or the like: see form 1. Or he drove him away, or expelled him; and so does اشردهُ [and so شرّد بِهِ].

I drove him away from me—شَرَّدْتُ بِهِ

تَشْرِيدٌ also means dispersing, or scattering.

disperse, or scatter, by them those [who shall come] after them—شَرِّدْ بِهِمْ مَنْ خَلْفَهُمْ

In the Qur’ān 8:59. Or: terrify by them those [who shall come] after them; or make them notorious to those [who shall come] after them.
