Form 1شَحَنَ4 senses

muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarشَحْنٌ شُحُونٌ شَحَنٌ

Said of a thing that is intensely acid.

IB says that the common use of this word as synonymous with أَمِيرٌ is a mistake. [That word means a commander or commandant and the like, and seems to be used only in post-classical times, from the Persian شَحْنَهْ, meaning in Persian, and so in Arabic also, a viceroy, prefect, chief of the police, or the like.]

it may be, according to him, a maṣdar of شَحَنَ, or an irregular plural of شِحْنَةٌ.

[But I rather think that it is a plural of شَاحِنٌ, as شُهُودٌ is of شَاهِدٌ, and so I would render the verse (which clearly relates to ships) thus: They kept close in the port, then they left it, and laders had persisted in contention because of their burdens, that is, the burdens of the ships, because of the labour they caused.]
