maṣdarشتو رُبُوعٌ شَتْوٌmuḍāriʿيَشْتُو
Core sense — the winter began; he spent the winter in a place; the day became intensely coldgenerated
1.1the winter commenced—شُتُوٌّ
.
Apparently like the way one says رَبَعَ الرَّبِيعُ.
1.1.1the day was, or became, intensely cold—شَتَا اليَوْمُ
Muḍāriʿ as above.
1.1.2he remained, stayed, or dwelt in a place, country, or town—شَتَا بِهِ
Muḍāriʿ as above.
That is, during the شِتَآء [or winter and the like], or during a شِتَآء in it.
I remained, stayed, or dwelt there—شَتَوْتُ بِهِ
we remained, stayed, or dwelt there—شَتَوْنَا بِهِ
he remained, stayed, or dwelt there—شتّى
Maṣdar تَشْتِيَةٌ and تشتّى; said by AZ to be from الشِّتَآءُ, like تَصَيَّفَ from الصَّيْفُ. All of these are apparently also transitive in this sense without a preposition.
Or, as some say, شَتَا الصَّيَّانَ means he remained, stayed, or dwelt in the صَمَّان [meaning a particular place and also a particular sort of place] in the شِتَآء, and تَشَتَّاهَا means he pastured his cattle there in the شِتَآء.
1.1.3the people, or party, experienced drought, barrenness, or dearth—شَتَا القَوْمُ
In the شِتَآء; also أَشْتَوْا.
1.2he was smitten by the شِتَآء—شَتِىَ
Like رَضِىَ in measure.
