سير

maṣdar سَيْرٌ and مَسِيرٌ, the latter irregular, since by rule it should be of the measure مَفْعَلٌ with fet-h to the ع; also مَسِيرَةٌ and سَيْرُورَةٌ, like قَيْلُولَةٌ, though Mtr says we have not heard it; and تَسْيَارٌ, which denotes repetition or frequency of the action.

He, or it, went in any manner or at any pace; went, or passed, along; marched, journeyed, or proceeded; went away, or departed: by night and by day.

Said of a camel or other beast, and of a man.

Said of a camel or a horse.

Or سار مِنْ بَلَدٍ إِلَى بَلَدٍ: he went, and so on.

That is, سَيْرِكَ.

So in the L, in the article نفذ.

Or: feign heedlessness, and bear with it, or be forbearing; a phrase with a word left out, as though it were originally سِرْ وَدَعْ عَنْكَ المِرَآءَ وَالشَّكَّ, go, and leave wrangling and doubt.

سار is also transitive, with the same meaning as سَيَّرَ. See that word, in five places.

and the like verbs اسارهُ and سارهُ, with maṣdar سَيْرٌ, سِيرَةٌ, مَسَارٌ and مَسِيرَةٌ.

سُورَ بِهِ is mentioned, for سِيرَ بِهِ, the regular passive form of سَارَ بِهِ; like هُوبَ and كُولَ.

Also اسارها and سارها, maṣdar سَيْرٌ, سِيرَةٌ, مَسَارٌ and مَسِيرٌ.

This explanation is Ibn-Buzurj's. But when you ride it out to pasture, Ibn-Buzurj says you use أَسَرْتُهَا or اسرتها إِلَى الكَلَأِ; or else الى المَرْعَى.

From سَيْرٌ, meaning “a thong”. Said of a garment, or piece of cloth, and of an arrow.

he went, or went along, with him; he went at an equal rate, or kept pace, with him; he ran with him, the same as جَارَاهُ.

A maṣdar of form 1. Used as a simple noun: a going, in any manner or at any pace; passage, march, journey, progress, or course; a pace, that is, rate of going; departure. See also سِيرَةٌ.

Also a thong, or strap, or strip of skin or leather; the same as شِرَاكٌ. Plural (of multitude) سُيُورٌ and سُيُورَةٌ, and (of paucity) أَسْيَارٌ.

A proverb, applied to two things exactly resembling each other. (AHeyth, Meyd.)

A post-classical proverb (Meyd). The thong meant, سير, is the one put through the perforation in the head of the staff, and to which a ring is tied, into which the hand is put. The proverb is applied to a man unable to do what he wants to do.

سَيُورٌ is used as an adjective in the same sense of a hackney, and of an ass.

Also سِيْرَآء, which by analogy should have tenween, though perhaps it is without it as being a contraction of the first form.

A sort of garment, or cloth, of the kind called بُرُود, having yellow stripes; or mixed with silk; or mixed with the silk termed قَزّ; or a sort of بُرُود of silk.

Or a sort of striped garment, or cloth, made of قَزّ; or certain garments, or cloths, of El-Yemen, now commonly known by the name of مَضْف.

Or a sort of بُرُود mixed with silk like thongs; and hence its name, from سَيْرٌ, “a thong”.

Some of the later writers assert that it is a noun, not an adjective, and cite Sb as saying that a word of the measure فِعَلَآءُ is not an adjective but a noun; hence, they say, it is used with a prefixed noun, as in حُلَّةُ سِيَرَآءَ, and is explained as meaning clear silk.

A journeyer, or traveller.

And سَيَّارَةٌ, for جَمَاعَةٌ سَيَّارَةٌ or قَوْمٌ سَيَّارَةٌ: a company of persons journeying.

ISd: سَيَّارَةٌ is made feminine because it means رُفْقَةٌ or جَمَاعَةٌ.

Ism fāʿil of form 1: going, and so on.

This word and سَارٌ are synonymous, meaning the rest, or remainder, of a thing; and according to some, the whole, or all, of a thing or of a body of people. See the first of these two words in the article سأر.

A maṣdar of سَارَ.

A space which one traverses in journeying; a journey as measured by the time it takes.

مَسِيرَةُ يَوْمٍ, a day's journey, is twenty-four miles.

A garment, or piece of cloth, figured with stripes like thongs, made of silk; or a بُرْد mixed with silk. See also سِيَرَآءُ.

A place from which one procures wheat, or other provision, for subsistence, to be laid up in store; from اِسْتَارَ, in the second of the senses given to it above, as analogy requires and as the S indicates.

A rájiz — namely Aboo-Wejzeh, as in one copy of the S — says: [I complain to God, the Mighty, the Very Forgiving, and then to you, this day, of the remoteness of the place from which I have to procure provision for subsistence]

Or, according to some, المُسْتَار in this verse is of the measure مُفْتَعَلٌ, from السَّيْرُ, and like it means the journey.
