like خَافَ; first person past tense سِلْتُ [like خِفْتُ] (Sb; in the K in this article, wrongly, سَلْتُ), and; imperative سَلْ; dual سَلَا and plural سَلُوا, both irregular; maṣdar سُوَالٌ, mentioned by Sb and by Th, and سِوَالٌ, mentioned by Th.
A certain fine scholar says: [Hudheyl] asked of the Apostle of God as a thing wished for [something beyond measure evil]
shāhidسَالَتْ هَذَيْلٌ رَسُولَ ٱللّٰهِ فَاحِشَةً
. It is not from سَأَلَ [that is, it is originally سَوِلَ, not formed from سَأَلَ by putting ا in place of أ], as many fine scholars say. Er-Rāghib.
So Akh and others, in the article سأل.

A variant of the verb with أ. The middle radical is originally و, not a substitute for أ, as is shown by the phrase هُمَايَتَسَاوَلَانِ mentioned by AZ; it belongs to the dialect of Hudheyl.

In the K, wrongly, سَوْلَة. تَسَوُّلٌ and تَسَوُّنٌ have the same meaning. It is said also of the part of the belly below the navel, and of other things, as for instance of a cloud.
