Core sense — an arrow; an arrow for drawing lots; a lot, share, or portiongenerated
1figurative · مجاز — inferredthe arrow of the archer: the constellation Sagitta—سَهْمُ الرَّامِى
An arrow: one of what are called نَبْل, with the iron head and the feathers fixed on. Before its feathers and its iron head are fixed on, the سَهْم is generally called قِدْحٌ; see the article قدح.
According to some it means the iron head itself, the same as نَصْلٌ. ISh gives this as its meaning, and says: if someone picks up a نصل you say, “What is this سَهْم you have?”, but if he picks up a قِدْح you do not say this.
The نَصْل is the broad and long سَهْم, and may be nearly as long as the space between the tip of the thumb and the tip of the forefinger when they are stretched out; and the مِشْقَص is half the size of the نَصْل. [But this meaning of سَهْمٌ seems to be very rare, and little known.]
Plural of multitude سِهَامٌ; plural of paucity أَسْهُمٌ.
One of the northern constellations, made up of five stars, between the bill of الدَّجَاجَةُ (which is Cygnus) and النَّسْرُ الطَّائرُ (which consists of stars of Aquila), in the Great Milky Way, with its head towards the east and its notch towards the west.
Its length, as it appears to the eye when it is in the middle of the sky, is about two cubits.
the arrow: the same constellation—السَّهْمُ
