Core sense — predecessors, the preceding generations; money paid in advance; a loan without profitgenerated
1the first chief persons of the Tābiʿees—السَّلَفُ الصَّالِحُ
Those who have gone before, or preceded [i.e. the preceding generations]; also سَلِيفٌ and سُلْفَةٌ and سَلُوفٌ, all of them ism jamʿ, of which the singular is سَالِفٌ.
Or those of a man's ancestors and relations who have gone before him, being above him in age and in excellence [but this addition is not always in agreement with usage]; one of them is termed سَالِفٌ.
The plural of سَلَفٌ is أَسْلَافٌ and سُلَّافٌ [the first a plural of paucity, the second of multitude]; or the second is plural of سَالِفٌ, and so is سَلَفٌ [said to be, though this is more properly called, as it is in the M, an ism jamʿ].
According to Zj, سُلُفٌ is plural of سَلِيفٌ, and سُلَفٌ is plural of سُلْفَةٌ, which means a company that has passed away.
Or سَالِفٌ and سَلِيفٌ mean the same: going before, preceding; same as مُتَقَدِّمٌ.
[According to Abu-l-Maḥāsin, السَّلَفُ is applied particularly to ʿĀïsheh the wife of Mohammad, the three Khaleefehs Aboo-Bekr and ʿOmar and ʿOthmān, Ṭalḥah and Ez-Zubeyr, the Khaleefeh Moʿāwiyeh, and ʿAmr Ibn-El-Āṣ.]
an appellation of the prophet Mohammad—السَّلَفُ المُقَدَّمُ
the tenets of the early Muslims—مَذَاهِبُ السَّلَفِ
1.1
Also a people, or party, going before, or preceding, in journeying.
1.2a company of men came to me—جَآءَنِى سَلَفٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ
It also means simply a company of men.
1.3
And any good, or righteous, deed that one has done beforehand [by way of preparing a future reward].
Or any فَرَط [i.e. cause of reward, or recompense, in the world to come, such as a child dying in infancy] that, as it were, goes before one. A ʿObeyd.
1.4
Same as سَلَمٌ: any money, or property, paid in advance as the price of a commodity for which the seller has become responsible and which one has bought on description.
Or payment for a commodity to be delivered at a fixed future time, with something added to the equivalent of the current price at the time of such payment, this being a source of profit to the one who makes the payment; سَلَمٌ also has this meaning.
Or a sort of sale in which the price is paid in advance and the commodity is withheld, on the condition of description, to a fixed future time.
It is a substantive from الإِسْلَافُ.
1.5
And a loan in which there is no profit to the lender except recompense in the world to come and thanks, and which the one who receives it must return as he received it. Hr: this is how the Arabs term it.
In this sense also the word is a substantive from الإِسْلَافُ.
3
Also, or سُلْفَةٌ: the foreskin of a boy; so says Lth.
And سَلِفٌ and سِلْفٌ mean the same; for this is what is meant by الجِلْدُ as an explanation of السَّلِفُ and السِّلْفُ in the K, in some copies of which الخُلْدُ is put by mistake for الجِلْدُ.
