The maṣdar is as above, and also سَفَحَتِ العَيْنُ دَمْعَهَا.

[And he slew at the head of the water so that] the blood covered the water—فَقَتَلَ عَلَىرَأْسِ المَآءِ حَتَّى سَفَحَ الدَّمُ المَآءَ

This is from a tradition, and is the explanation given of it. IAth says that it does not fit the language, since سَفْحٌ means pouring out; so the meaning may be that the blood made the water pour out — as when something heavier than the contents is poured into a full vessel, and as much comes out of it as was poured in.
