maṣdarسَطْوٌmuḍāriʿيَسْطُو

Core sense — he sprang upon him, he overpowered him; he extracted the fetus of a pregnant femalegenerated

1.1he sprang, or rushed, upon him; he made an assault on himعَلَيْهِ

maṣdar سَطْوٌ and سَطْوَةٌ, or the second of these is a maṣdar denoting a single act.

Same in meaning as صَالَ: he sprang upon him and seized him violently, or laid violent hands on him.

Er-Rāghib: he seized him violently with uplifted hand.

He also overbore him, overpowered him, or subdued him — قَهَرَهُ, or تَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِ — by seizing him violently, or laying violent hands on him, and abasing him; or he seized him with great violence; or he stretched out his hand to him [to seize him].

he springs upon, or overbears, the she-camel that he coversيَسْطُو عَلَى طَرُوقَتِهِ

Said in like manner of a stallion camel.

Lane cites “Bd in xxii. 71” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.1.1he (the pastor) put his hand into the vulva of the she-camel, or of the mare, and extracted the stallion's spermسَطَا عَلَى النَّاقَةِ

Also الفَرَسِ; maṣdar سَطْوٌ and سُطُوٌّ. The part named is the رَحِم [or vulva].

When the sperm is not extracted, the she-camel does not conceive. Or this is done when she has been covered by a stallion of low breed, or when the sperm is bad and she has not conceived by it.

Also he extracted the dead fetus from her (a she-camel), while مَسَطَ means he extracted the stallion's sperm; this is how Az distinguishes the two verbs.

IAar: one says سَطَا عَلَى الحَامِلِ, and also سَاطَ, formed by transposition, meaning he extracted the fetus, or young one, of the pregnant female.

A'Obeyd mentions السَّطْوُ as used of a woman. In a tradition of El-Hasan: لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَسْطُوَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى المَرْأَةِ [There is, or will be, no harm in the man's extracting the fetus of the woman]. Lth explains this by saying that when her child sticks fast in her belly, dead, it may be extracted by him when there is fear for her and no woman is found to do it.

1.1.2he went at random, heedlessly, or headlong, not obeying guidanceسَطَا

Said of a horse.

1.1.3

Also, said of a horse: he went with a wide step; or he raised his tail in running, which is approved.

1.1.4figurative · مجاز

Also, said of water: it was, or became, abundant, or copious.

1.1.5figurative · مجاز

And he tasted food, and took it with the hand, or with the extended hand.

1.1.6

And it is the same as عَاقَبَ [apparently meaning he punished: see سَطْوَةٌ below].

1.1.7he had sexual intercourse with herسَطَاهَا

[And so سَطَأَهَا and شَطَأَهَا] on the authority of Aboo-Sa'eed.

When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, thou wilt notice a denial on the faces of the Unbelievers! they nearly attack with violence those who rehearse Our Signs to them. Say, "Shall I tell you of something (far) worse than these Signs? It is the Fire (of Hell)! Allah has promised it to the Unbelievers! and evil is that destination!"
