Form 1سَرُعَ1 sense

maṣdar سِرَعٌ and سَرَعٌ [and mentioned in the K, but apparently as a simple noun,] and سِرْعٌ and سَرْعٌ and سَرَاعَةٌ and سُرْعَةٌ; or this last is a simple noun from أَسْرَعَ, but it is also generally used in the same sense as the maṣdars just mentioned when they serve as simple nouns, and is more common than any of them.

He, or it, was quick, hasty, speedy, rapid, swift, or fleet: in course, tendency, action, speech, and the like. Or, said of a man, the same as أَسْرَعَ [which may mean as above, or he hastened, made haste, or sped], in his speech and in his actions.

But Sb makes a difference between سَرُعَ and أَسْرَعَ: see the latter below.

A dialectal variant of سَرُعَ.

تسرّع, said of an affair or event, means the same as سَرُعَ.

سَرْعَ is a contraction of it; for the Arabs contract by dropping ḍammah and kasrah, since these are hard to pronounce, saying فَخْذٌ for فَخِذٌ and عَضْدٌ for عَضْدٌ. But one should not say حَجْرٌ for حَجَرٌ or the like, according to the Basrees, though the Koofees allow the contraction with fatḥah also, as in سَلْفَ for سَلَفَ.

All of these mean سَرْعَانَ [i.e. quick was your doing that: or how quick was your doing that! or, which is nearly the same, excellently quick was your doing that; for سَرُعَ is like قَضُوَ and رَمُوَ, which denote excellence].

Form 3مُسَارَعَةٌ1 sense

The hastening with another; or vying, or striving, with another in hastening; or hastening to be, or get, before another or others; إِلَى شَىْءٍ to a thing. Also تَسَارُعٌ, the same as مُبَادَرَةٌ; and إِسْرَاعٌ is synonymous with it too — not, however, as explained above, but in the sense of بُدُورٌ, that is, simply the hastening to a thing.

تسارعوا إِلَيْهِ means the same.

4.1when one of you passes by a leaning wall, let him quicken his pace—إِذَا مَرَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِطِرْبَالٍ مَائِلٍ فَلْيُسْرِعِ المَشْىَ

he was quick, speedy, or swift in going, journeying, or pace—اسرع فِى السَّيْرِ

Originally transitive: he quickened, or hastened, himself, or his going, and the like.

Occurs in a tradition.

It is used also with a word left out, meaning he hastened, he made haste, he sped, he went quickly.

Like سَرُعَ.

Or rather he hastened, made haste, or sped in it; for اسرع means he endeavoured and aimed to be quick, as though he hastened the pace, while سَرُعَ denotes what is like an innate quality.

The verb being originally transitive, when you say of someone اسرع فى السير, it is as though it meant he urged himself forward with haste, or he quickened the pace; the object is left unexpressed only because those speaking together understand the meaning. Or the verb may be transitive by means of a particle and also without a particle; or when made directly transitive, the phrase may be meant to be understood as one with a word left out.

According to Fei, اسرع فِى مَشْيِهِ and the like, is originally اسرع مَشْيَهُ [he quickened, or hastened, his pace, or going], فى being redundant; or اسرع الحَرَكَةَ فِى مَشْيِهِ [he quickened, or hastened, the motion in his going].

اسرع إِلَيْهِ means اسرع المُضِىَّ إِلَيْهِ [he quickened, or hastened, the going to him].

سرّع is the same as اسرع.

he hastened, or made haste, to do evil, or mischief—تسرّع إِلَى الشَّرِّ

سُرْعَانَ and سِرْعَانَ and سَرُعَانَ, the last with ḍammah to the ر, occurring in the phrase سرعانَ ذَا خُرُوجًا, which means سَرُعَ ذَا خُرُوجًا [quick is this in coming forth: or how quick is this in coming forth! or, which is nearly the same, excellently quick in coming forth], are dialectal variants, changed from the original form, which is سَرُعَ, and for that reason made indeclinable, taking the final vowel of سَرُعَ as their termination.

The word سرعان is used as a simple khabar [placed before its mubtadaʾ], and also as a khabar expressing wonder. [See بُطْآنَ.]

quick, or how quick, is this melted grease!—سَرَعَانَ ذَا إِهَالَةٌ

This saying arose from the fact that a man had a lean ewe, her snivel running from her nostrils because of her leanness; when he was asked, “What is this?” he answered, “Her grease”; whereupon the asker said as above. The last word is in the accusative as a denotative of state, and the meaning is: quick, or how quick, is this snivel coming forth in the state of melted grease! Or the last word is a specifying word, on the supposition that the action is transferred from its proper agent, as in the phrase تَصَبَّبَ زَيْدٌ عَرَقًا, and the meaning to be understood is: quick, or how quick, is the melted grease of this! The saying is applied to one who tells of a thing's coming to pass before its time; it is a proverb.

Said of God in the Qur'ān 2:198 and elsewhere; meaning that His reckoning will inevitably come to pass; or that one reckoning will not divert Him from another reckoning, nor one thing from another thing; or that His actions are quick, none of them later than He desires, because it is done without manual work and without effort, so that He will reckon with mankind, after raising them from death and gathering them, in the twinkling of an eye, without numbering or calculating.

13:41

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّا نَأْتِى ٱلْأَرْضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَحْكُمُ لَا مُعَقِّبَ لِحُكْمِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ

See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? (Where) Allah commands, there is none to put back His Command: and He is swift in calling to account.

14:51

That Allah may requite each soul according to its deserts; and verily Allah is swift in calling to account.

40:17

ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ ۚ لَا ظُلْمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ

That Day will every soul be requited for what it earned; no injustice will there be that Day, for Allah is Swift in taking account.

Quick, expeditious, hasty, speedy, rapid, swift, or fleet; [in course, tendency, action, speech, &c.;] (S, Msb, * TA;) as also سَرِعٌ [and سَرْعٌ ] and سُرَاعٌ , of which the fem. is with ة , and سَرْعَانُ , of which the fem. is سَرْعَى ; (TA;) i. q. مُسْرِعٌ , (K,) which signifies as above; (TA;) [and which also signifies hastening, making haste, or speeding;] and مِسْرَعٌ , also, signifies quick, &c., ( سَرِيع ,) to [do] good or evil: (K:) the pl. of سريع is سُرْعَانٌ , (K,) and سِرَاعٌ is [also a pl. of the same,] syn. with مُسْرِعُونَ . (Msb.) You say, فَرَسٌ سَرِيعٌ and سُرَاعٌ [A quick, swift, or fleet, horse]: (IB:) and حِجْرٌ سُرَاعَةٌ meaning سَرِيعَةٌ [a quick, swift, or fleet, mare]. (K.) And اِسْعَ عَلَى رِجْلِكَ السَّرْعَى [Go thou quickly; lit. go thou, or walk thou, or run thou, upon thy quick, or swift, leg]. (Fr.) And جَآءَ سَرْعًا meaning سَرِيعًا [He, or it, came quickly, hastily, speedily, &c.]. (TA.) And God is said [in the Kur ii. 198, &c.] to be سَرِيعُ الحِسَابِ [Quick in reckoning], meaning that his reckoning will inevitably come to pass; or that one reckoning will not divert Him from another reckoning, nor one thing from another thing; or that his actions are quick, none of them being later than He desireth, because it is done without manual operation and without effort, so that He will reckon with mankind, after raising them from death and congregating them, in the twinkling of an eye, without numbering, or calculating: (K:) and [in like manner He is said in the same, chap. vi., last verse, to be] سَرِيعُ العِقَابِ [quick in punishing]. (El-Mufradát, B.) Also A certain kind of going, or pace; coupled with سُنْبُكٌ , which signifies another kind thereof. (Ibn-Habeeb, TA.) [ السَّرِيعُ The ninth metre ( بَحْر ) in prosody, in which each hemistich originally consisted of مُسْتَفْعِلُنْ مُسْتَفْعِلُنْ مَفْعُولَاتُ .] And أَبُو سَرِيعٍ The [shrub called] عَرْفَج : or the fire that is therein. (K. [See زَحْفَةٌ .]) Also A shoot, or twig, that falls from the بَشَام [or tree of the balsam of Mekkeh]: pl. سِرْعَانٌ and سُرْعَانٌ . (K.)
