Nounسَرْحٌ5 senses · 3 main

Core sense — cattle sent out to pasture; a large shady tree; the outer court of a housegenerated

1

Cattle, or camels and the like, pasturing where they please, by themselves; or only such as are sent, or driven, forth to pasture in the morning and brought back in the evening to their nightly resting-place. A maṣdar used as a noun.

A'Obeyd says that سَرْحٌ, سَارِحٌ and سَارِحَةٌ mean cattle, or camels and the like.

Khálid Ibn-Jembeh says that سَارِحَةٌ means camels and sheep or goats, and is used of a single beast as well as of a collection of beasts.

2

Also: a certain kind of trees, large and tall, not pastured on, or seldom eaten by camels and the like, but used for their shade. They grow in Nejd, in plain or soft ground and in rugged ground, but not in sand nor on a mountain, and they have a yellow fruit. The ism waḥda is formed with ة.

It is said to be the same as the آء, but this is a mistake; in fact it bears a kind of berry called آء, resembling the olive.

Or: any trees without thorns, the ism waḥda in this sense being formed with ة; or any tall trees.

Or trees of the kind called عِضَاه, great, with spreading branches, beneath which men alight in the صَيْف [or summer].

AHn: the سَرْحَة is a great tree with spreading branches, widely extending, beneath which people often alight; men alight beneath it in the صَيْف [or summer] and pitch tents or build houses beneath it, and its shade is good.

According to information given to Az by an Arab of the desert whom he never knew to tell a lie, it has a dusty colour, is not so tall as the أَثْل [a species of tamarisk], has small leaves and lank branches or twigs, and always grows slanting, its inclination among all the trees being towards the south.

Lth says that the سَرْح are a kind of trees that have a fruit, and that they are the أَلَآء (الالآء, apparently a mistranscription for الآء, that is, the آء); but Az says that this is a mistake.

Lth cites the saying of ʿAntarah: [He is a man of valour, tall of stature, as though his clothes were upon a great tree such as is called سرحة; sandals of سبت are cut and made for him, such as kings wear; and he is not a twin, so that he has been well suckled.]

shāhid
بَطَلٌ كَأَنَّ ثِيَابَهُ فِى سَرْحَةٍتُحْذَى نِعَالُ السِّبْتِ لَيْسَ بِتَوْءَمِ

He thus describes this man as tall of stature, which shows that the سرحة is a large tree; but the الآء [or آء] has no trunk and no tallness.

IAar says that the سَرْح are ذَكْوَان that have become large, and that the ذكوان are certain trees having beautiful shoots such as are termed عَسَالِيج. The plural is سِرَاحٌ.

2.1figurative · مجاز

The ism waḥda, سَرْحَةٌ, is applied by a metonymy to a man's wife.

Az says that the Arabs call a woman, or wife, a سَرْحة growing over water, because in that case it is in the most beautiful condition.

2.2

According to Forskål (Flora Aegypt. Arab. pp. 106 and 68), the name سرح is applied to a plant of the class pentandria, which he calls Cadaba farinosa (described by him on p. 68), growing in the lower region of the mountains of Wádee-Surdud, in Tihámeh.

3

Also: the outer court or yard of a house, or, as in the L, of a gate or door.

The wolf. Of the measure فِعْلَانٌ, the ن being an augmentative letter, from the verb سَرَحَ.

Also سِرْحَالٌ (Yaakoob); feminine سِرْحَانَةٌ and سِرْحَالَهٌ.

And the lion, in the dialect of Hudheyl. Plural سَرَاحِينُ, سَرَاحٍ and سِرَاحٌ, though Az does not remember having heard the last.

It is said in a proverb: [The evening-meal, or supper — that is, the seeking for it — made him fall, or light, upon a wolf.]

shāhid
سَقَطَ العَشَآءُ بِهِ عَلَى سِرْحَانِ

According to A'Obeyd it arose from a man's going out to seek the evening-meal and falling upon a wolf, which devoured him; according to As, from a like accident to a beast; according to IAar, from a man's being slain by another man named سِرْحَان. It is applied to seeking something one wants when that seeking leads to one's destruction.

See Freytag's Arab. Prov. 1. 599; but the name written there as “Hasahah” is هُزْلَة, according to Meyd the father, but according to the O the brother, of Sirhán.

1.1the false dawn, that is, the first dawnذَنَبُ السِّرْحَانِ

So called from السِّرْحَانُ as meaning “the wolf”, or, as some say, “the lion”.

A term nearly matching the Greek.

السِّرْحَانُ, or سِرْحَانٌ, is also the name of a certain dog, and of a certain horse, and of another horse.

2

Also: the middle of a watering-trough or tank. Plural as above.
