Form 1سَرَّهُ8 senses · 5 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُيَسَرُّmaṣdarمَسَرَّةٌ سُرُورٌ سَرٌّ سَرَرٌ

Core sense — he rejoiced him, he gladdened him; he cut a child's navel-stringgenerated

1.1

According to the TA this has two opposite meanings: it is stated there that one says سَرَرْتُهُ meaning كَتَمْتُهُ, and سَرَرْتُهُ meaning أَعْلَنْتُهُ, and it is added that the word will occur again soon; but it does not occur again in that work, and I have not found it in any other lexicon. I therefore think it is a mistranscription for أَسْرَرْتُهُ, first person of أَسَرَّهُ.

1.2he, or it, rejoiced him, gladdened him, or made him happyسَرَّهُ

which latter, from the explanations of it given below, seems generally, if not only, to be a maṣdar of سُرَّ; and سُرٌّ, which is also synonymous with سُرُورٌ in the senses assigned to that word below; and سُرَّى and تَسِرَّةٌ, this last perhaps also a maṣdar of سرّرهُ, which Freytag explains as synonymous with سَرَّهُ in the sense that follows, though without indicating any authority.

Synonymous with أَفْرَحَهُ: he made him experience a pleasure, or delight, and a dilatation of the heart with no outward sign of it; see سُرُورٌ below.

he rejoiced, was joyful or glad, or was happyسُرَّ

as mentioned above. Or: he experienced a pleasure, or delight, and a dilatation of the heart of which there was no outward sign, according to an explanation of سُرُورٌ.

he rejoiced, or was happy, by reason of him, or itسُرَّ بِهِ
he rejoiced, or was happy, by reason of him, or itاِسْتَسَرَّ
1.2.1he saluted him with the offering of sweet-smelling plantsسَرَّهُ

Muḍāriʿ as above. What is offered is called المَسَرَّة: the extremities of sweet-smelling plants.

1.3he cut the navel-string of a childسَرَّهُ

Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdar سَرٌّ or سِرٌّ. The navel-string is termed سِرَر or سُرّ.

he (a child) had his navel-string cutسُرَّ
1.3.1he pierced him, or thrust him, in his navelسَرَّهُ

Muḍāriʿ as above. With a spear or the like, in his سُرَّة, that is, his navel.

A poet says: [We pierce them in the navel if they advance; and if they retreat, they are those who are pierced in the podex]

shāhid
وَإِنْ أَدْبَرُوا فَهُمُ مَنْ يُسَبْنَسُرُّهُمُ إِنْ هُمُ أَقْبَلُوا

Here يُسَبْ stands for يُسَبُّ.

1.4he put a piece of wood, or a small piece of wood, inside the fire-stick, or in its end, to produce fire with itسَرَّ الزَّنْدَ

. The زند is the piece of stick, or wood, for producing fire; the small piece is inserted in its interior.

fill up the inside of your fire-stick so that it may produce fireسُرَّ زَنْدَكَ فَإِنَّهُ أَسَرُّ

Said because the زند is worn hollow.

1.5said of a man: he had a complaint of the navelسَرَّ

Second person سَرِرْتَ, remarked upon by MF as irregular, though it agrees with a general rule. The سُرَّة is the navel.

1.5.1

Also, with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar, said of a camel: he had the pain, or disorder, termed سَرَرٌ.

Form 4اسرّهُ4 senses · 1 main
maṣdarإِسْرَارٌ

Core sense — he concealed it, kept it secret; and, oppositely, he revealed itgenerated

4.1they will show repentanceوَأَسَرُّوا ٱلنَّدَامَةَ

and according to the TA سَرَّهُ, but see the first sense of this article. He concealed it, suppressed it, kept it secret — a story or the like; and, in the opposite sense, he manifested it, revealed it, published it, made it known.

Both meanings have been assigned to the verb in this phrase, in the Qur 10:55 and 34:32. Some say the meaning is: they will show repentance. Th says: they will conceal it from their chiefs. The former, says ISd, is the more correct; the former is also given on the authority of AO, but Sh says he has not heard it from anyone else, and Az says the lexicologists most strongly disapprove of AO's saying. It is also said that the meaning is that they, the chiefs of the polytheists, will conceal repentance from the lower class of their people, whom they had led astray; and Zj and the other expositors say the same.

The two opposite meanings are assigned to the verb in the same way in the saying of Imra-el-Keys, in his Muʿallaqah, لَوْ يُسِرُّونَ مَقْتَلِى, which As used to quote with ش, thus: لَوْ يُشِرُّونَ مَقْتَلِى, meaning that they might publish, or make known, my slaughter.

he revealed a story to him secretlyأَسَرَّ إِلَيْهِ حَدِيثًا
I showed, or manifested, love, or affection, to himأَسْرَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ المَوَدَّةَ
I showed, or manifested, love, or affection, to himبِالمَوَدَّةِ
you reveal to them the news of the Prophet, because of the love between you and themتُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ

An example occurs in the Qur 66:3.

This is in the Qur 60:1; the object of the verb is left out. Or المودّة may be the object, the ب being a redundant corroborative, as in أَخَذَ الخِطَامَ and أَخَذَ بِهِ; and this interpretation is correct, for إِسْرَارٌ to a person necessarily implies revealing a secret to him and at the same time concealing it from another.

Qur’ān 66:3 approximate — somewhere between 66:1 and 66:4 Lane cites “Kur lxvi. 3”
Qur’ān 66:3 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root

When the Prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his consorts, and she then divulged it (to another), and Allah made it known to him, he confirmed part thereof and repudiated a part. Then when he told her thereof, she said, "Who told thee this? "He said, "He told me Who knows and is well-acquainted (with all things)."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Then there came a caravan of travellers: they sent their water-carrier (for water), and he let down his bucket (into the well)... He said: "Ah there! Good news! Here is a (fine) young man!" So they concealed him as a treasure! But Allah knoweth well all that they do!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

(S, M, Msb, K.) Both of these significations have been assigned to the verb in the phrase وَأَسَرُّوا ٱلنَّدَامَةَ , in the Kur [x. 55 and xxxiv. 32]: (S:) some say, that the meaning is They will manifest repentance: Th says, they will conceal it from their chiefs: the former [says ISd] is the more correct: (M:) the former meaning is also given on the authority of AO; but Sh says, I have not heard it on the authority of any other; and Az says that the lexicologists most strongly disapprove of the saying of AO; and it is said that the meaning is, they, the chiefs of the polytheists, will conceal repentance from the lower class of their people, whom they shall have caused to err; and in like manner say Zj and the [other] expositors. In like manner also the two contr. significations are assigned to the verb in the saying of Imra-el- Keys, [in his Mo'allakah,] لَوْ يُسِرُّونَ مَقْتَلِى , which As used to quote with ش , thus, لَوْ يُشِرُّونَ مَقْتَلِى , meaning that they might publish, or make known, my slaughter. And أَسْرَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ المَوَدَّةَ , and بِالمَوَدَّةِ , I showed, or manifested, to him love, or affection. (S.) It is said in the Kur [lx. 1], تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ , meaning, Ye reveal to them the news of the Prophet by reason of the love that is between you and them; the objective complement of the verb being suppressed: or المودّة may be an objective complement, the ب being a redundant corroborative, as in أَخَذَ الخِطَامَ and أَخَذَ بِهِ : (Msb:) and this interpretation is correct; for إِسْرَارٌ to a person necessarily implies revealing a secret to him and at the same time concealing it from another. (B.) وَأَسَرُّوهُ بِضَاعَةً , in the Kur xii. 19, signifies And they concealed, or kept secret, his case, making him as an article of merchandise: (Jel:) or they conjectured in their minds that they should obtain, by selling him, merchandise. (TA.) [See also an ex. voce اِرْتَغَى , in art. رغو .] اسرّ الفَاتِحَةَ , and بِالفَاتِحَةِ , He recited the Fátihah [or First Chapter of the Kur-án] secretly, or inaudibly: (Msb:) or the latter form of expression is a mistake. (Mgh.) أَسْرَرْتُهُ also signifies نَسَبْتُهُ إِلَى السِّرِّ [which may mean either I attributed it to secrecy, or, like many phrases of this kind, by inversion, I attributed to him secrecy, or mystery]. Or سَرُورٌ when used as a simple noun, though this is strange and, according to MF, unknown, whether as a simple noun or as a maṣdar; and سُرٌّ and سَرَّآءُ and تَسُرَّةٌ: happiness, joy, or gladness; synonymous with فَرَحٌ, the opposite of حُزْنٌ.

Er-Rāghib: a dilatation of the bosom with delight, or pleasure, in which there is quiet, or rest, of mind, whether of short or of long continuance; whereas فَرَحٌ is a dilatation of the bosom with delight, or pleasure, of short continuance, passing and not lasting, as is the case with bodily and worldly pleasures; but فَرَح is sometimes called سُرُور, and the reverse.

Or سُرُورٌ means pleasure, or delight, and a dilatation of the heart of which there is no outward sign, distinguished from حُبُورٌ, which is cheerfulness, that is, pleasure, or delight, or dilatation of the heart which has a visible effect in the face.

1

A concubine-slave; a female slave whom one takes as a possession and for intercourse; a female slave to whom one assigns a house, or chamber, in which he lodges her, and whom he takes as a possession and for intercourse.

Of the measure فُعْلِيَّةٌ, from سِرٌّ as meaning intercourse, or as meaning concealment, because a man often conceals her and keeps her from his wife; altered from the regular form of a relative noun by having damm in place of kesr, for the relative noun is sometimes so altered, as in دُهْرِىٌّ from الدَّهْرُ and سُهْلِىٌّ from الأَرْضُ السَّهْلَةُ. Or it has damm to distinguish it from سِرِّيَّةٌ, which is applied to a free woman with whom one has intercourse secretly, or one who prostitutes herself.

Or it is from سُرٌّ in the sense of سُرُورٌ, because her owner rejoices in her; and if so it agrees with analogy. So says AHeyth, and this is the best that has been said about it.

Or it is of the measure فُعُّولَةٌ from سَرْوٌ, the second و being changed into ى for euphony, and then the other و being merged into it and so becoming ى like it, after which the dammeh is changed into a kesreh because the ى is next to it.

The plural is سَرَارِىُّ and سَرَارٍ, the latter by poetic licence.
